For the compulsive shopping I find putting things on wishlists can get me that same pleasure of purchasing but also gives me a chance to wait till I'm in a better mindset and look at the things more objectively on weather or not I need them

Another tip is that with sales or getting "a deal" on something, think: "would I still want this if it was full price?" Buying something just because it's a good deal can lead to regrets if you didn't actually need or want that item in the first place - even if it was a low amount, you still spent money unnecessarily.

To be fair, i believe that certain things are more "worth it" when on sale. For example, there is a top I wanted to buy which seemed too expensive for what I'd get, so I'm currently waiting to see if it will go on sale. Of course it's not the same thing as buying somethin just because it's on sale, but I still think the price to quality ratio is important.

I'm from Europe and the idea of wanting salespeople to approach you is so wild to me, if they won't let me browse alone I'm already out of the store, if I need help I'll ask 😅 I think it's because people here usually don't get a commission, so I'm just not used to that kind of interaction and when it happens it IMMEDIATELY feels either like they want to pressure me into buying something or sometimes even like they're scared that I can ruin the items they have in store by browsing myself or something.
@user-is7xs1mr9y
@user-is7xs1mr9y 2 года назад
I feel exactly the same. It usually works the same here in Mexico. Funny thing is, workers approach me when I'm just browsing, but when I go with the intention of actually buying something, it's like I don't exist lol.

No asking no requesting just straight up treat them like shit. And then maybe buy maybe not. I don’t give them the choice you gonna hear me. Oh and they hate it. I had one lady even say oh I can’t hold stuff for customers. I said well darling if you are going to follow me around like a lost puppy you might as well make yourself useful. Everything you said is relatable, but the one that hit me the most is ''under pressure''. My family and friends keep telling me to buy a car, when I'm just trying to get a house. I feel like I need the house because I can't stand living in my parents house anymore. I'm not American, so culturally, nobody will judge you if you're still living with your parents even if you're in 30s and still single. Their house has become a mini warehouse because they keep buying new things and dust just keeps piling up. Meanwhile, the new house has enough space to keep a car, but I don't think a car is necessary because I can still use my motorcycle just fine and the traffic here sucks as hell. If I didn't know any better, I would definitely buy the car while paying mortgage and burden my future self with impossible wishes and regrets. I'm glad I'm not giving into that pressure.

I 'm in my 50s and PROUDLY(!) not owning a car, just a tiny Honda. I had bigger bikes before but when you aren't in the mood to waste fuel on joyrides, you don't need those. Friendly coworkers try to nag me, to get another car but I try to explain /discus openly, how that won't make me any happier. After about 3 rounds they seem to understand. In other fields I appreciate friends' shopping assistance. Clothes for example. I usually pick some similary broke gal with good taste and tell goals and budget.

One question I ask that REALLY works for me is: A) Did I actually TRY them on? Because if I didn’t, how do I know how they actually feel? B) Will this outfit be useful? Like does it actually match with anything I have in my wardrobe? Is it good quality or does it look cheap? Will I actually wear this?

Don't feel bad about being ignored in a store. I'm a white male and it happens to me all the time. These workers these days just don't care. They're making minimum wage or not much above it and they just don't care. Customer service seems to be a thing of the past. My almost shopping addiction helped, when I told myself: "Okay, put anything you want in the shopping card, but pay it later". When I looked into the shopping cart like a week later, in reality, I really needed maybe one item. Also I divide my money into "envelopes" so I save up for all of my bills, my potential bills and then if anything is left, I'll go and buy myself a little treat. It helps soothe that need to spend. With clothes, I try to realistically picture it wearing to see, if it's my real day to day style or my "dream" style. Not having enough space to store excessive crap helps a lot too. Sorry for the word vommit, I just didn't want to forget anything I wanted to say.

I've been quite responsible with my money; I treat my credit card like a debit card and I have a budget and savings set aside every month. This new year though my financial goals are to escape the hedonic treadmill because I tend to want pretty things when I'm stressed and to invest more of my money. Great tips, BTW. I would also add to the uncomfortable part - don't buy 'aspirational' clothes. Clothes that you think you will fit after you do xx or yy. Just buy clothes that actually fit you at that moment and you'll feel much better. This rule has served me really well when clothes shopping.

I have definitely been ignored and given the "ew poor person" disgust look. I own expensive clothes but they are lowkey and I don't like to flaunt and I also look young so I feel like some people might think I'm some annoying high schooler. Something that I find really annoying is that I always have huge sweat stains under my armpits in coloured tops. However, this does help me a lot because I can only wear black or white things, with a few things as an exception. So this limits me to things I can buy, which sucks, but also helps because finding things I can wear is more difficult so I can’t really spent a lot of money on clothes, simply because I can’t wear most items.

I understand completely. I have the same problem and it's so much easier sticking with blacks, whites, grays, and other dark colors.

I personally hate it when sales people talk to me too much. I'm fine with an hello, and goodbye. And occasionally a ''can I help you'' is fine, but I really don't need it.

I DO sometimes just go shopping for the experience of shopping, and do "emotional shopping" for dopamine release. I limit it to X amounts of times a month, and budget for it. I go without my wallet, and only cash so it's impossible for me to overspend, and I usually go to thrift stores or antique stores because a) I'll spend more time looking for things, and I'm there more for the experience than for actual items and b) usually I can get more stuff with less money. Sometimes I rethrift the stuff I buy to the same store lol. This for me is worth it. People will spend a lot of money for experiences like say, going to a theme park, just for the memories and the actual experience. I do that with shopping, I know it makes me happy, but I set limits and do it smartly so that I don't have any monetary regrets.

I hate that. After making purchases to some friends, I just stopped. Two reasons come to mind: 1) if you need friends to help you, than it's not a durable business, get the hell out.; 2) I wouldn't do that to a friend - start a business just because I won't put effort in doing or searching for something else - and impose myself to my friends, making them purchase stuff so I can pay my bills. Not fair.

if you work, pay your bills on time and have money left over then do what you want with it....spend £/$500 on those trainers you like, oh that a cool table yeah ill get that. dont hesitate, dont think is it a waste of money, no it is not a waste of money, you earned it, spend it all. ''oh im a saver, i save all my money'' why? for what reason? ive never understood people who dont spend money.
