When you upgrade from 8 to 9 speed drivetrain, you need new shifters, chain, cassette and perhaps a new derailleur.
Today I’m going to correct this Trek FX 2 to the point where a 9 speed drivetrain is supposed to be.
Can the 8 speed shifters work with the 9 speed cassette? No, the spacing between the 8 and 9 speed cassettes are different and they won’t work well together.
The 9 speed chain is also thinner than the 8 speed, so if you are using a 8 speed on a 9 speed cassette, it would rather jump gears or hit the cassette.
