Dear Mrs DePuy, I am an MD with stage 1 PD. I just listened to your 3-29-13 talk on swallowing and speech. Very excellent!!! One point I can add to: the question about ‘does using a straw help prevent aspiration?” You said no. Now , if you are producing the vacuum from the back of the throat, I agree, aspiration will occur. But I find a straw VERY helpful: Tongue pressed firmly against the roof of mouth shuts off the epiglottis (apparently), and the vacuum is developed in the front part of the floor of the mouth/lower cheek/lower teeth area. The liquid goes there, and from there is swallowed down the sides of the throat, completely avoidng the epiglottis/trachea area.. I do this all the time, and find it very helpful in drinking and avoiding aspiration. Appreciated your excellent talk. Dr. Joe DeCook (obgyn, Michigan, ret.)

Is there a pack with exercises on it? Also she said she would talk about the talking for a patient ie answering a slow speaker and interrupting them cos you can't wait till end! We need help on this issue!
