@@jamiewindsor Honestly, it's the thing that differentiates if from just a regular talk about color I've seen so many times. I think it's a very good idea to put more of those little technical explanations, especially when it isn't that complex to present. Additionally, it all came together in the end, because you showed how to work with complementary colors, not against them in HSL which was a key point of intro. Love your content! :)

You can achieve what you are doing with the Calibration tool in lightroom, very well and with a far more control in CaptureOne by using the Color Editor + Skin Tone tool with its uniformity sliders. Many oversee the Skin Tone tool and think it's only a skin tone tool, but it can be used for any kind of color manipulation, then combine that with layers and the only limit is your imagination & creativity.

Your content is soo soo good! Thanks for all these precious information that you give us for free! I have a question about the colour wheel though! The color wheel you are using is wrong isn't it? The real perceptual color wheel should have magenta yellow and cyan as primaries subtractive, and red green and blue as primary additive (or secondaries and vice versa), so red should be complementary to cyan and not green, based on how our eye works. So why do we still like wrong complementaries such as red and green? Is it just because we are used to this since artists are using them in this way for decades?

Jamie! Thank you so much for this! Came at a perfect time right as I was starting to look deeper into colour grading. I now have a much better understanding of what to focus on when processing my images to achieve a better result. Definitely going to rewatch this video a few times!! I get that it was just for demonstration purposes but I noticed that for one of the images you edited (the bride and groom on the beach) you cropped it to a bit of a random aspect ratio. Do you have go to aspect ratios (4:3, 2:3, 8x10 etc) or orientations (landscape or portrait) depending on the project or the subject or do you tend to avoid standard sizes in favour of just having an image that best suits the subject? Is there a theory behind aspect ratios and the mood they convey or how they are perceived (ie wide angle is seen as cinematic)? Sorry for the ramble. Looking forward to the new presets!

There is a software that has a similar function as Calibration: Darktable with the module “Color Calibration”. The software is open-source and has a (lot) steeper learning curve compared to LR. It is organized through modules (Exposer, Filmic, Curves and so on), and each module can: be duplicated many times, have their own mask (not only with pencil or path but also parametric (gray channel, R B G channels, Chroma channel, Hue channel, etc)) and each module can also have a blend mode applied (like the layers mode on Photoshop). It would be nice to also have such flexibility on LR. Other highlights (for LR users) are the Filmic and Contrast equalizer modules. Thank you very much for your channel. You hope you get enough revenue to keep it going.

It’s the Calibration tool that forces me to stay with Abobe for RAW editing, because I mainly shoot live music (or did pre-COVID) and it is the only way to help fix some of the terrible colour casts from the cheap LED lights used in small venues. Still looking for another editing option, and I’ve tried lots without success.

I want to point out something interesting about composition which reveals itself in this video. In several examples you desaturate the example and say "If these were in B&W they wouldn't work." I don't disagree for the sake of the topic of this video being color...but I want to say that the photos still "work" compositionally. That when you desaturate the examples, we STILL see consummate composition. Thank for letting me toss in my 3 cents!

Jamie I love your videos. Thankl you for your work. You mention in the video that the Calibration tool does not exist in Capture One (which I use). Would using the calibration tool be very similar to using curves ? Is it difficult to achieve the same effect with curves ? (I really do not master them well yet - at least for the individual color channels)
