In this video I give you some practical advice for being more intentional about the colours in your images, and how to limit your colour space in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop using the Hue, Saturation and Luminance tool (or HSL sliders). I also give you examples of complementary and analogous colour schemes from the world of cinema, and talk about what we mean when we say we are trying to achieve a 'cinematic look' to our photography.

Sean, when you turned your color correction settings off then back on I saw the deep level of design you bring to the details of your presentations. Only a superior teacher would come up with that rapid and incredibly effective technique to make your point. Then you explained the kind of impact you wanted the color design and lighting to convey to the viewer. I instantly saw it and felt it. While we viewers concentrate on the important lessons and techniques that you bring forth month after month it’s easy to lose sight of what a good teacher you are. Congratulations on another excellent presentation. As I have often commented Sean, be safe, be well, and continue to do good stuff. Given the world we’re currently living through that world needs you more than ever.

I can't thank you enough for posting this tutorial. The information therein is priceless. Many times I have been frustrated with presets, buying into the promise that I could get the same results that their sales literature promises. But the value of your video goes beyond that. For a long time I have been looking for a tool that I could use to control which colors are dominant in a photo and which others need to be adjusted or converted. And there it was all along. It's already available in the software I have so I need not spend a dime. And the results are everything I was searching for.

Sean, you just taught a lot more about the complimentary colors and how to use them in the most simplest way possible. I have been watching lots of videos on how to do this but none of them was this easy. Thanks a lot... and also i agree with your perspective on presets as well not that i'm against it; just because i don't see fun in editing photos from scratch.

Great video! One nitpick: technically our eyes are more sensitive to some colors than others. Camera's sensors actually have more green sensors to compensate for this.

Wow Sean, this is by far the best explanation of using color to change the mood of an image and how to do it, that I've seen. I will be watching this one several times. And as another commenter stated, thank you so much for not having seven or eight ads peppered throughout the video. That is so distracting, I've stopped watching many creators I use to enjoy. This is exacerbated now for those of us in the US as we approach election season and we are bombarded by political ads.The approach you used for Audible in this video is far less of a distraction and a lot more meaningful to viewers.

this is so good explained. I already new a lot about colours, but you explained in a different way. I always thought I am supposed to use tone curves and split toning, because everyone does, although I don't really like the effects. As you said, it brings colours in ALL the Highlights/blacks even when there are actually other colours. Now I feel much more confident in doing it my way.

Thanks for this video. I think its the 2nd vid from you that is focused entirely on the colors and creating ones own style. I always keep in mind your words that it's not what you highlight, it's what you reduce that make a mood... I've not used presets so far, because I'm afraid that once I start using them I'll never develop my own style. after this material I'll exercise with some random photos. Thanks again!
