8 Tips to be a GOOD HOMEMAKER 2023 

I’m not religious at all but I love your videos and attitude towards being a good, loving and joyful person for yourself and family. I find many of the values you discuss are lacking in modern life and I can see why it’s taken it’s toll on modern society’s mental well-being xo

I strongly agree with the getting dressed thing. I have been working from home and got married since 2020. Getting dressed makes you feel better. Not just yoga pants but actually putting on something that makes you feel special.

One thing I learned from FLY Lady with homemaking is don’t try to catch up.. just start again where you are. The work will always be there.. just keep going and let it be imperfect. ❤

I am a homeschooling mama of 4 children 6 and under and I'm pregnant with my 5th. My husband's business also keeps me busy. It does wonders for me to get dressed and look presentable every single day. One tip that has been a lifesaver for me on busy Sunday mornings is that my oven has a delay start function, and Sunday morning before we leave I pop leftovers in the oven and set it to start warming the food about 2 hrs later. That way when we walk in the door we can immediately eat a hot meal. Such a lifesaver with hungry little ones!!

My sister told me about a Mama that has a RU-vid channel who said that we need to be the thermostat in our home ,not the thermometer. I've been guilty 😔. If we can do like you said and make our homes a safe calm place for our families, there would be less stress and fussing. Playing calming music and having the house smelling good is one way I try to make my home an oasis. When my husband and son come home to that, it makes them happy and relaxed. “Homemaking is a ministry” I’ve never heard this before… EVER!!! And our good Lord has placed me in a season of learning how to do this without a “blueprint”. I was just discussing “life” with my daughter in law. I told her that my physical focus and energy is outward to others with those daily habitual breaks for prayer (I pray the Liturgy of the Hours) being my inner solace and strength. This makes me happy as a retired women in good health. Folks can get too wrapped up in themselves and this leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness. I say……”When I leave this world……others will notice that I’m gone”…….😉

Steph!!! What wise words from such a young woman! (I am 60, soon to be 61). My mama was an awesome housekeeper, the one negative thing she did was to do everything and follow behind us and picked up after us. We did not have chores, was not taught how to cook, Budget, deeper cleaning (back in the day, refrigerators had drip trays and I had no clue that it had to be cleaned regularly, so “eww” stinky kitchen) or laundry. When I had children, my goal was to instill habits like picking up after yourselves, helping to clean the house, do the laundry, cook and bake, do dishes, basic first aid, having pets to care for and be responsible for and money management- everything was age appropriate starting at 15 months old (singing while “helping” me putting away toys or putting their laundry away, etc and building as they got older and more capable). They are in the mid-late 30’s now and say now they appreciate me being a “slave driver” LOL! As for keeping your home “perfect” our homes should be “perfect” for our families and should reflect the personalities of the people in that home and not what Pinterest or YT influencers says is what is on trend. A maintained, picked up home that reflects your families interests is so much cozier and inviting than that “perfect” decor item styling that reflect others influence rather than yours. Sure, repaint, change carpeting and rugs, but do not buy things because it’s a “must have trendy thing”. And above all else, and which you truly reflect in your videos and life, is to be joyful and loving with your life and home and content where you are at in this moment and every day forward (even when you get the humdrum’s).

#1 is great. When I first divorced I did something like this. I was so overwhelmed. So I would list 3 things on a sticky. Each day I just concentrated on getting those done. That was a lifesaver.

I found doing a mid week reset/clean/planning helps too. I get overwhelmed trying to plan for the whole week. So I clean and prep for Mon- Wed. Wednesday night we reset, clean, laundry, meal plan etc for the remainder of the week and the weekend.

Love this. Been a homemaker for 22 years. Different chapters for sure. 4 kids in 5 years means success sometimes looks like keeping them safe and alive all day. ☺️But now they are all teens. And the days have much bigger tasks! Where did you get that dress?? Love it!

This was so encouraging and thank you for the reminder that homemaking is a ministry. I am grateful for my husband who works so tirelessly so I may remain at home with our 8 children. I have not been the best at delegating tasks, but am committed to turning it around this summer. God Bless!

I also think that asking your husband what he likes when it comes to your appearance is great too. Ask him what he likes overall and then ask him what he would want you to prioritize if you only had 5-10 minutes to get dressed/do hair/do makeup. You'll be surprised how easy men are to please!

Really good tips, thank you! I'm on maternity leave with my beautiful 4 month old baby, and its the first time in my life where I'm not working, and trying to navigate many new thing. Being a new mom and learning my new baby, taking care of my home in a new way, balancing my own interests and self care, and really having to emphasize that its not going to be perfect and I have to be realistic as I get into a routine. It's a lot to get used to! But trying to adopt small cleaning habits so that nothing feels overwhelming, and really reframing cleaning and cooking (things I enjoy) as a part of my role to care for my family and home is helping a lot.

My disabilities make cleaning difficult (not impossible, just difficult). I'll scroll through videos looking for tips and I find channel after channel and they make it look like they're just absolutely perfect and amazing & it gets disheartening like I'm never going to be good enough

Thanks for this. I was career oriented and career focused. I didn't really plan to have children. Then a surprise pregnancy and suddenly my husband and i had 3 littles in 3 years. Now im struggling and realizing I don't know how to manage or be a homemaker even though i was succesful in my field at work. It's overwhelming and hard to know where to start.

I love your video. I've been a full-time homemaker. It has earned me $ 440 per month for social security. Let that set in. Throughout my later years working here and there part time jobs and short term full time job. I raised children to work full time and in a growing career.

Oh girl, this season in my life with 4 kids, a full time job, my husbands business and keeping the house running, I LIVE IN my sloppy sweatshirt, and yoga pants with my crazy hair...I find that comfort outweighs looks at this time in my life. I teach my kids that outer looks at times mask what really counts in a person..heart and mind❤

It makes complete sense... like duh... but when you talked about not speaking so negatively about motherhood and being a homemaker because it just keeps ypu in that state. Like I'll never be happy as a homemaker if I'm always speaking and thinking negatively about it. Love that.

I am a grandmother of three, so am probably much older than most of your viewers, but I appreciate your caring nature and the sincere way you express yourself and your faith. Homemaking is, indeed, a ministry and a special and important calling. Having taught for seven years before our daughter was born, we now laugh at the fact that I tried to make every activity with her an educational one, somehow. Our three little grandchildren live nearby, so the teacher in me still comes out occasionally (more accurately, a lot). 🤭☺️ Thank you for giving voice to the worthiness of being a homemaker!

i actually had different reasons for dressing nicely (not always, i'm not perfect, but an upgrade from my former self for sure!) but i agree with your points. for me, i am the only feminine influence in my kids lives. grandma on both sides is absent in their lives, i have only sons, their aunts live on the other side of the country, so ultimately when my sons start looking for a wife i wanted to try and set a better example of what i want for them. i don't try to be perfect, but i was absolutely a sloppy and lazy dresser before. i wear dresses very often now and do my best to keep clean and nice. ultimately it comes down to whatever girl is the best fit for my children, but i don't want them gravitating towards a certain kind of girl, because i will say from experience, my 'i dont care' attitude towards my appearance also showed in my home, and my work ethic was kind of trash. it took me a few years before i was able to train myself to be better. dressing nice makes me feel better, like i'm setting myself up for success, and i feel like i'm putting on my work uniform when i wear my aprons (i mean it in a good way, as when i was growing up we were very much just "wipe it on your pants and move on" type people).

Love your videos. Would you share about what you have your kids help do? Also I am so guilty of throwing my hair up, holes in my clothes and no makeup. I have a hard time fixing up to just clean and take care of kids.

Thanks Steph, a great video as usual. Please could you remind me of the author and book you spoke about towards the end? She had provided a quote about what homemaking should be. A tip I would add is to take a chunk of time each day - even if it can only be 10 mins - to self nurture. Either a bible reading from a year study, which is what I do, or a quiet cup of tea or coffee where you're undisturbed. Just checking in with yourself and your faith can work miracles in terms of turbo charging your resolve for the day.

So I’m recently married to the love of my and right now I’m expecting my first, which is really exciting so I’m just trying to learn how to be a good housewife a mom because my mother sadly didn’t understand board responsibility and cleaning and dressing nicely and it really affected me as a kid and it affect me as an adult a bit sense for the time being we’re living with my parents right now we’re moving out soon which is good but I’m trying to learn everything from scratch because I never had that growing up and it’s sometimes overwhelming so I wanted to say thank you for this advice about just taking things easily a few things a day not to stress yourself too much

Hi Steph, thanks for cheering us on!! Some of those tips I already do, like having a dinner on Fridays be pizza every week my husband looks forward to the pizza, b/c it is at the end of the week. #2 is the beginning of raising structured, responsible individuals.

We have certain "set" expectations. EVERY night, we wash the dishes. No dirty dishes are left in the sink. IF after we have washed them, someone uses dishes, they must wash them. Also, i make our bed pretty much everyday,. My retired husband does the house laundry on Fridays, so my daughter and I will then clean then clean the bathrooms on this day.

You are so right about getting dressed!!! My mom had a strict schedule for school. We ate breakfast at 9am sharp and we had to be dressed with our hair done!! She checked our rooms and the bed had to be made and all clothes put away :) so glad she was that way!! It truly affects schooling when we're dressed and ready to learn!!! ♡ also helped the feel of the home knowing everyone's rooms were already straightend up an there wasn't a huge mess to clean up after school.

I agree with the getting dressed everyday with the exception of when I am sick or the family is sick, then it is going to be yoga pants and top knot.

I used to do one laundry day but now we are a family of 7 on a farm and on a septic system I space it out, it’s usually a load every other day but I don’t mind it so much. It feel less overwhelming and since we don’t have a dryer I can air dry one load at a time where a weeks worth the whole house would be strewn with laundry racks haha
