She coulda gotten money from somewhere else. Scholarship, got invited for something, or maybe someone else just paid for it. Either that or she worked hard at a minimum wage job just to get a first class ticket- in which case she’s not good at money.
So sad to read through the comments and find a whole bunch of hopelessness being spread about. It's just sad that people think that success is only the result of luck, and that it's all about who's dealt the right cards. Don't believe those lies... You CAN be successful. Yes, it may take more effort than average, or maybe less, depending on where you're at, but the choice to be successful in any area of life is your choice. Don't let the mopers, blamers, and critics of success and successful people drag you down. Most are only envious of where successful people are at and aren't willing to do what it takes in their own lives to be successful, so they'll just try to drag everyone else down to where they're at, because it makes them comfortable. Don't let them! Keep dreaming! Keep striving! You can make this world a better place!

Then can you explain to me why some lazy assholes that no one could possibly like, that lack intelligence subtlety, and charisma, become so filthy stinking rich that they own solid gold toilets? And don;t say hard work, because the key word here is lazy.

After watching the video, I remembered Henry David Thoreau's saying, "Success usually comes to someone who is too busy to find it." In other words, success is given to people who live a busy and passionate day for success, not to those who only hope for success and do nothing. I should be a person who can practice these eight elements at the same time by engraving passion, work, focus, push, idea, improve, serve, persist and person deep in my heart. 😄

There are some serious issues with his methodology, so the conclusions should be taken with a large grain of salt. 1) He is asking successful people what they think led to their success. This is only useful if we assume that successful people have a good understanding of what made them successful. He admits he doesn't understand how he became successful himself. Plenty of people who win games of pure chance (e.g. roulette, snakes and ladders) incorrectly attribute their success to skill/strategy. 2) He is effectively asking successful people to describe their own personality. There are inherent biases at play. For example most people think they are more intelligent, altruistic, creative and hardworking than most people. 3) There is no control group. As far as we know, people who aren't so successful would also claim to be passionate, hardworking, and to have had persisted in the face of adversity etc. A good test for this theory is to see whether he can use it to design a questionnaire/interview/technique which can predict who will be successful and who won't (before they become successful or don't). I'm sure there would be a huge amount of interest in this if it can be made to work. For example employers might want to use it to test job applicants.
I agree with you in that there is bias when simply asking successful people an open-ended question such as, "What made you successful?" However, there are so many factors that play into the success of a person. Not all depend on just personality traits. I would go as far as to argue that luck and connections also play a huge factor into a person's success.
Good point! Unfortunately, human wouldn't like to hear that kind of story 'cause most people failed, and they want the miracle or some kind of beautiful lie to make themselves feel much more better.
+Akshay Agarwal I have to agree with this.I would say that most of the factors that determine if you're going to be successful or not ultimately are a result of your genetics and your environment. Some people are able to work harder than others because of their brain chemistry. And some people can just happen to have the right connections with people. So I would say it's mainly down to luck really.
+AldSotha I would say determination is still due to your brain's emotional chemistry. There are people who end up less motivated than other people because they are constantly depressed. Even then, as determined as I have been, any success I've had is by stumbling across the right people who I feel would value my work just as much if I put in a lot less effort. That said, I still put a ton of work into what I do because a get a great deal of pleasure from doing so. Again that's to do with how my brain works. Of course I did say it's mainly down to luck, not everything. Your genetics and environment are things you can take advantage of so you can reach your potential. I would say keep doing what you have a passion for, meet new people and share your ideas/work with them for example. You can do that more than ever now with the internet. Although I say it's mainly luck, there are so many ways to help your odds of being successful. I just disagree with people who say you can make yourself successful just by putting in tons of effort and following your passion. That's just what I have to say anyway.
Sean McQueen Yeah, but even when depressed, there are things you can do. There is also, that people need to choose realistic goals. Stupid goals may lead to disasters. I agree generally wity you last sentecne there.
What’s interesting is that so many of us experienced the same automatic reaction to this video. I kept skipping through, got to the message and felt the same as so many others. Separately and alone. I felt like maybe I was too impatient... then I read many of the comments. It’s so interesting, IMHO, that it made me feel better about my response because I wasn’t alone.

Pushing your version of success on others is part of problem with this world. Not saying people don’t deserve to have their stories heard but that’s all this is. One persons life. One person perspective. Yours and all of our lives are so individualized and unique that success stories like this are just teaching us to us other peoples strengths and our teaching us that our strengths are weaknesses which is not the best way to approach cultivating better lives for others

I guess being positive is one of the most important steps and I'm so grateful that this guy right here did this. While you all are saying that this is fake, that he's wasting his time, etc., most of the people listening to him are being motivated. Having a passion, loving what you do is what you need if you wanna be successful. You do need to hard work, sometimes it can't be easy but don't give up and keep thinking to improve. A lot of these things successful people say is things we already know. It's the same thing told over and over again. Our biggest problem is fear, self doubts, lack of passion, impatience, procrastination, forgetting you're not the only one on earth with misfortunes, selfishness; the need to fit in either with a person you care about, a small group, or a large crowd. If you cannot fix those problems yourself then there's nothing to be done. Success depends on you, what do and who you associate with. It's easier to blame others for our problems.....easier than 1+1=2.
I read his book 12 years ago, when I was still a regular IT guy. I'm no longer in the IT field (nor I'm a half-millionar). However these principals that I read 12 years ago are the basis of my new business and I feel great!

See the lady moving her head at 2:52. Her hair isn't magically morphing; this is an artifact of bad green-screening. And his audio isn't right. In a big environment like that, there would be ambient sounds and faint echoes that would be impossible to remove. This guy has had stage time, they just don't have a good recording of his sound on stage. So they tried (miserably) to jury rig it.

It is quite shocking to see so many negative comments. I think the video is great! I don't care about the editing of the video... Fake laugh track etc... What is most important is the underlying message and how it makes you feel - the backstory adds scope and context that many people can be successful. At the end of all this, it is really up to you as an individual, how you react to the 8 traits presented. Richard St. John has done extensive research over a long period of time over his career and this is what he came up with. It may seem like a generic list to you, but what credentials have you got to have a greater counter to his research? Do not doubt yourself in what you can achieve. Do not pay attention to the people who haven't achieved anything and want to drag you down because of their own self doubts. The successful people are the few that broke free from the noise. Do understand that we are individuals and you can achieve success if you really believe you can. Apply the 8 traits to your life. Give a pen to a physicist and he will attempt to solve the mysteries of the universe, give a pen to an artist and he will attempt to draw an inspiring masterpiece. Give a pen to you... what will you do? Start with an idea...

Honestly, anybody reading this comment, I'm becoming an author that will spread lovely stories around the world about important life lessons, my view on life and people! I just feel such a great need to create a change in the world! I have even started writing, or practicing, and I can just feel it! I keep saying when I'm good I'll start writing but I'm not waiting for my success I'm working for it!

if you interview poor ppl about their life, you'll most likely see these 8 traits present in their life also. If you're really dont want to sound philological, there is another factors that play into success: OPPORTUNITY. there are several books that complied stories and exp. about just opportunity and how it plays a large factors into a person life.

Lu Randir Those developers aren't successful, they're one-hit wonders. They make a single really shitty game that somehow becomes popular by a pure stroke of luck, they get a few hundred thousand dollars from it, then it the hype dies down, the project ceases to be maintained, and nothing is heard about the developer ever again. Additionally, these developers don't actually become successful until they make connections. Like the people who came up with the portal idea were non-existent until Valve snatched them up, and Minecraft didn't boom off until Microsoft snatched it up.

I personaly were working on few AAA titles and now I have my small basement studio making small games which give me much more income than those AAA titles. You can be successful without being CEO of huge company, an you need little more than internet and laptop to develop those days. Anyone can and skill you get over time anyway :)

And having a couple of people like your game on a homebrew forum doesn't either. and when it comes to game development, having connections is always the case. You don't just make a game and wait for the money flood in; a lot of time and money is put into advertisement.
Daemon Ryuou Hehe if you say so :) I think its easy to find a lot of games which sold hundred of thousands of indie copies which as far as I can count is great income for indies. Its not income comparable to minecraft or AAA as a whole but per person income is really satisfying. So I think maybe simply success definition between mine and yours is the problem here :D

To me, success is simply achieve my dream goals and once I achieve them, think of other goals to achieve until I die. Life is meaningless without a goal.
ZeZeBatata69 He's being sociable and reaching out to multiple audiences who may have shorter attention spans for long, boring speeches. Ted-ed is meant for teens and up. He's telling an anecdote to supplement his point.
Poorly dubbed and cut together images of a guy in a green room and real people from who knows where, with some random group of people superimposed to make it *look* like he has an audience taking forever to get to the promised points, most of which are common sense presented in the most wishy-washy bullshit manner possible. TED talks have a reputation for being amazingly informative. But as I've watched them I've noticed a lot of things like occasional errors in the speakers presentation of the subject or a streak of subjective bias in favor of the speakers subject and even just plain nonsensical garbage like this. :/
Xeno I've learned that TED talks should be taken with a grain of salt and they're not nearly as informative as they say. You still have to double check every claim and sometimes speakers are just plain wrong. This is all this man's opinion on how to be successful, you can take it or leave it. Success can be defined however you decide it is.

Actually, I really liked this video and it made me laugh, but that was not _THE_ video about the subject from the same speaker I am searching. The video I search is for me a reference I am not shy to share. It is a video I wanted to share. I will find it for you and post it later here. However, what you expect here? He explained his story and to me, wow... it was a formidable speech and for me it added up to the video I already had. But that was mostly him describing a part of his work / search on the topics. Can't you understand he has done work with hundreds of people (call them interview) and that he analyzed what he has got from all these succesfully people, and he at least tried to rationalize what can lead to success? People do not always say what is the truth. I talk like Dr. House here. In the sense that people are not 100% conscious of the truth or the real reasons for their success for example. That does not mean some people are not very near. However, when he said he was considered a MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER... no matter how accurate he is to the absolute truth on success, I can tell you that the video I search of him, represents his conclusion in this video you qualified as garbage very easily. TheStoneSpiral What do you expect about live speakers? And people that tackle lot of varying subjects that are not always easy to rationalize. Like answering a question about "What lead to success?" And then concluding on something [not an absolute and exhaustive truth if you read well] "8 traits of successful people" (in this video they are given very fast at end and that is the big reason of me seeking this speaker, on top of his clear skills to tell a story a cool way, he made me laugh just in this video a couple time, no matter if the editing is true or fake, I don't care, the speech and content is there and it was very interesting to me... but not the video I would share if I had only one, it is more a behind the scene here). You expect there is never gonna be an occasional errors? (fear of doing any error is actually a good way to fails! That does not mean you want to aim 90% of error rate, but if you *never* do errors, chance are you don't try much, of course if you do not try much, you do not do any errors... but you probably don't get much success either!!). But saying this guy is non-sense garbage is not playing in your favor at all honestly here. But I am open and I will call this an offside for you. The game is not over and you can try to pass the line again correctly. ;-)

But the goal of this guy is not to define success. The goal is to find what lead to success. Your own success can be anything of course: - Make 3 gazillion dollars - Have a nice wife 3 kids, 1 healthy, 2 handicaped one and a tri-legged dogs, and one busty wife and a sporty mistress. - Find a cure for AIDS - Bang 100 chicks in a year... "I don't want to know your name, I just want ..." (Group X) - Be a nice person - Play in the Major League of Cricket - Whatever - etc. Then the question is... how people reach their success. And how people that we regard as more succesful reach success? What are the attitude of those? Answer/traits could even be what we perceive as negative... let's say irrespectful people who are bullish and are egocentric then to be more succesful... then those might be traits. Of course if any of this was part of a potential real answer or would increase your chance of succeeding, that will be shocking, but maybe those bully do succeed also because of other things than their bully attitude and some Mr. Nice Guy succeed for the same reason. As I understand, the guy did interviews, he analyzed, he tried to extracts common traits or important thing to have as traits or to develop as traits to reach success. There is not only one way to reach success, but let's say if you listen to it and build on those traits, supposing he is on the right track, you should increase your chance of reaching success. If your success image is being millionary, then chance are you can do it only by winning the lottery. Chance are you then lead a marvellous life... or find out the money does not make you that much happier until you find your new money, repeat and reach the same sad conclusion. Then find out Steve Jobs did lot of succesful projects at different companies (not only Apple!!) and was very rich at a very early age... and... it did not matter that much to him. He continued... because he was driven. Or maybe his money was just something else and money will make you all happy. Like this little girl. She only want to succeed and get millionary, right? ;-)
Great storyteller. Just taught a class in organisational storytelling and I will send this to the students as an example. At the same time, it reminds them of key traits not just to life success but to project success, study success...pretty much any time you want to get somewhere.
Gratefulness is the secret to happiness. Once we all realize how incredibly lucky we are to even be alive on this planet and stop comparing ourselves to others, true happiness will find us. The one thing that helped me so much to become more grateful was Forwago.
Next do a video on survivorship bias. The greatest component to success is luck. You can do everything wrong and succeed or do everything right and fail.
My dad went to a conference thing with his girlfriend who is a manager. He didn't want to be the only non successful one so he told all of the company founders and etc that he was "Tony from Toblerone". We will never let him forget

It's because it subtly feels like a purposely surreal tim and eric sketch, but it's actually only incidentally surreal. The presenters inflections and style of comedic delivery is what causes this.
It is not in front of a live audience, the sound of the presenter sounds like it was recorded in studio, the audience was photoshopped in. It doesn't feel real or genuine, and it seems like a trick, so it's harder to buy into his theory.

This video made me feel like I have to keep pushing myself. And I thought maybe i knew these things already. I just tried not to take action. Also I’m beginning to understand why they had no choice but to be masterful in their field. I don’t know what to say except for that Keeping up the good work is the most important thing. Sometimes a lot of thought used to get wind of our challenge, isn’t it? Also, it’s important that we have this perception that it’s now or never! In that sense, i wouldn’t give up developing myself constantly in a milion years. That’s the name of the game!

If you just live in the moment, each step kinda describes how a succesful person would act When your happy you love what you do What your feeling energetic, you work hard When your feeling relaxed, you focus, When your feeling adventurous, you push yourself When your feeling creative, you come up with ideas When your feeling academic you improve on what you already know and learn new things When your feeling compassionate you serve others something of value When your depressed, you persist.
Huge problem with this whole project: survivor bias. It's like interviewing lottery winners and coming the conclusion that the way to get rich is to win the lottery by buying a lot of lottery tickets. In reality, on average people that buy a lot of lottery tickets are worse off, not better off...
