As an A's fan, that Cespedes for Lester trade hurt my soul. We were the best team in baseball for a couple months at that point and it completely destroyed our momentum and ultimately cost us real playoff aspirations. Lester went to the Cubs the next year and we were left with a sour taste
@@jarradmccarthy9033 Yeah, they got a talented young pitcher who has ace and superstar potential, on the other hand, Rodney bombed out for the Marlins after pitching like he did in 2012 for San Diego.
The Marlin's pitching isn't awful. Caleb Smith is great. If they kept paddock... Damn. Not bad. I wouldn't say as bad as trading Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, Andrew Miller, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Miguel Cabera, and Mike Lowell. I probably forgot a few, but the Marlin's are known for that, actually worse then the As and my Royals.
Yeah it's bad but at the time Paddack was a no ranked player in the minors with 1 good minor league season in low A and A. At the time Rodney was one of the best relievers in baseball. Then he blew up with us making him setup. Paddack had TJ so it looked moot but he has come back very strong. Worse than this trade his Luis Castillo for Dan Straily. Why?! The pads gifted him back to us after Colin Rea got hurt. Ugh.
Astros get: Mike Fiers Carlos Gomez Brewers get: Josh Hader Domingo Santana Brett Phillips (who we pretty much got for moustakas straight up) and Adrain Houser
It's honestly so painful being a Padres fan. We get screwed so many times, I've darn near lost count. Trea Turner going to the Nationals is another sore spot for me as well. But thankfully we got a gold mine in Tatis Jr. If he wasn't on our team right now, I don't think there would be nearly as much buzz about the Padres going into this season (whenever this darn COVID-19 quarantine will end) as there is.
You could also add another Padres disaster when we gave up Trea Turner for Wil Myers in a multiple team trade. Thank goodness we got Tatis Jr. because other than that, our ownership and management has been horrendous in trades.
The Cubs acquired Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for four players: pitcher Adam Warren and prospects Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford Yes the Cubs Won the World Series but, in the Off-season Chapman Resigned with the Yankees The Yankees Basically gave up Chapman for half a season for him to get a ring and got 4 players one of which (Gleyber Torres) is their starting SS and then Signed Chapman in the Off-season
The Cubs got a critical piece to ending the largest active championship drought across the major American sports. It is insane to me that you would consider it one of the worst trades for them. You won't find a single Cubs' fan who regrets the team making that trade, regardless of the hefty price.
@@remediedyawn yeah I see that but, they still gave up all those pieces and yes they got a ring but, Chapman went back to the Yankees in the offseason. So the Cubs got a ring but look at the future of the Yankees with Chapman and Torres and all the other pieces they got
@@thebrettman Oh yea, I think we can all agree that the Yankees basically got Torres for nothing. The Cubs history is what required them to make such a drastic move, but it paid off for them. I would say both parties were successful in this trade for very different reasons.
Give it a few years, but you’ll be adding these to your list: Jose Quintana to the Cubs for Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease. Adam Eaton to the Nats for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning.
LudaChez that’s exactly what I’m saying. Eaton’s been injured virtually every season and hasn’t produced quite like you’d hope especially from a corner outfielder. Still not sure what we’ll get out of Lopez, but Giolito’s turned the corner and look out for Dane Dunning once he recovers from TJ.
@@kevinlindgren95 ok I misread it because I have seen people say the Sox lost that one...but Giolito looked great this year. Eaton is going to the WS and had a decent post season....but they definitely got him to play every day and get on base.
@@Drogon7102 The Tigers gave up Curtis Granderson, then a multi-tool player. Edwin Jackson had been a good pitcher. The Tigers did get Austin Jackson, practically a wash for Granderson. Max Scherzer? Strikeouts prevail in MLB...
I love the Christian Yelich one. Never say a trade is bad a year after it happened. He hasn't had a season even close to that 2018 run sense and now the Brewers are far from competing
Lil Boligrafo it def hurts whitesox. The most promising ss prospect they have just signed out of Cuba. He is said to be a slap hitter with good defense and speed. Having tatis and Tim Anderson would be a better situation.
i thought the napoli + juan rivera trade for vernon wells was gonna be in here for sure. that’s easily one of the worst trades ever. mostly cause i’m an angels fan and i loved napoli.
Mark Melancon to the Nats for Felipe Rivero and Taylor Hearn Melancon was a top arm at the time and the Nats needed bullpen help, as usual. But he was just okay during his 2.5 month time with the Nats and bolted for San Fran Hearn has done nothing at all. But Rivero has been one of the best relievers in the game since the trade. The Nats could really use him rn
That Yoenis Cespedes trade at the ‘14 deadline was still one of the worst of all time imo. Trade your 4 hitter who’s presence in the lineup gave protection to Moss batting fifth and Donaldson batting third. Along with the fact that you had already traded for pitching in Samardijza and Hamels. And Cespy was a favorite in the clubhouse and by the fans. For a rental in John Lester who didn’t do great in Oakland and couldn’t hold anything in the wild card game whether it be a lead or runners. Went from the best record in baseball at the break with him on the team to barely getting the 2nd wildcard after a terrible 2nd half collapse without him barely 88 wins.
Padres GM Jed Hoyer originally traded for Rizzo from the Red Sox and then Hoyer traded again for him as soon as he became the Cubs GM. Rizzo had multiple call-ups with the Padres, but he never could hit for them and they lost patience. Or maybe Hoyer knew he was leaving SD and made it appear that Rizzo was a bust before he left the Pads organization. I was always suspicious how a young player could turn it around so fast like Rizzo did for the Cubs.
I think the Brewers and Astros Carlos Gomez trade in 2013 ended up pretty bad for the Stros. They acquired Gomez and Mike Fiers in exchange for Domingo Santana, Brett Phillips, Josh Hader and Adrian Houser. The 4 named all contributed to the Brewers substantially over the past couple years and Phillips helped the Brewers acquire Moustakas last year
1:09 Dang. Is the MLB draft THAT quiet that the number 1 overall pick has to watch himself get drafted on his phone? That's wild. Usually draft nights are some of the biggest, most important, and star studded nights in sports. Especially with Football and Basketball
It might be a little early but the worst trade ever is Dodgers receive Josh fields and the Astros receive 2 home runs in World Series off of him and Yordan Alvarez
The problem with these kinds of stories is many times free-agency is looming and teams want to unload a short-timer for some players they can control for a while. Miami wanted Bellinger from the Dodgers (with 5 years left if team control) for Realmuto (with only two years.) Even a bad deal before Bellinger had an MVP season.
Worst trade in recent years for the Houston Astros was the deal they made in 2015 with the Brewers to acquire Carlos Gomes and Mike Fiers for JOSH HADER, Domingo Santana, Brett Philips, and Adrian Houser... All still playing the in Bigs... They (Brewers) later Traded Brett Philips to the Royals for MIKE MOUSTAKAS...
is he though? i mean, we're halfway through his rookie year..... ya'll gave up a 2 time cy young winner and anthony rizzo when they were both relatively young guys..... i'm not saying Tatis won't be great, but lets not call him the biggest steal ever halfway through his rookie year, especially when you look at the success Kluber and Rizzo had, and thats just one team
Aaron Hicks for John Ryan Murphy trade for part 2. As a twins fan that really hurt. Hicks had a breakout year in 2015 and we decided to trade him that offseason for a backup catcher who ended up in the minors most of the year. I know Murphy has been decent with the dbacks but he was garbage for us. Hicks has only gotten better for the Yankees and is part of the reason that team is so good
Who is here after Arenado has been disappointing and leading the Cardinals to mediocrity. As much as I want him to succeed the trade has done nothing to move the needle. Just as trading for Ozuna and Goldy has done nothing. Paying premium for downturned statistics isn't success.
bmilll5269 It was a bad trade but definitely not one of the worst because eloy is unproven and Quintana has been okay with spots of greatness, really consistent.
Trea Turner and Joe Ross to Nationals, Steven Souza to the Rays. (three team deal also included Wil Myers to the Padres) Also a good one, Christian Guzman for Tanner Roark, 2009 ( Guzman didn't last a month with the Rangers)
OMG the Chisox could right now have Tatis and Moncada who are two young great players. I would be remiss if at 61 years old I did not bring up that the Mets in 1971 traded Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi. I think every team has had some clunkers through out the years, love your content.
I still can’t believe the Reds gave up on Yasmani Grandal shortly after drafting him with their first round pick years ago. They have Barnhart and Stephenson now, so it’s all good. Barnhart has been awesome this year. He should be the NL starter.
Dbacks trading Max Scherzer to Detroit in a 3 team trade should be a dishonorable mention. Got back Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy, but it's Max freaking Scherzer.
@Jasonfire34 He was not Max freaking Scherzer then was he? He was just one of several 1st rounders who was doing good (3.86 ERA, 1.317 WHIP and a 9.5 K per inning) but not anything great. I would say if Max never gets traded to Detroit he never becomes Max "freaking" Scherzer.
The Arietta deal doesn’t hurt me that much. What really hurts me is when we traded Hader and Davies to the Brewers for Gerardo Parra. Yeah Parra was solid, but being that Hader and Davies have been incredible just hurts me...
I'm very surprised we didn't see Kevin Pillar in this video. Traded to the Giants for Brito, Hanson and Law. Brito had a 0.09 batting average w the Jay's Hanson was alright and Law just sucks. Would love to see this in part 2.
Amex_ CA lol Kevin pillar has never been more than sub par. Law can def turn out to be pretty solid... trade isn’t even worth the time you took to type it out
Top notch content man. Oh the Padres... I noticed that all of the entries trades involved small market teams. Maybe these smaller market teams were handcuffed by a thier lower salary cap and had to make the best of a tough reality. For example Oakland, there was no way they could pay Donaldson what he was worth, they had to trade him... it's just tough for me to think that oaktown got sonl little value for him!! That trade with Toronto was the best offer on the table???? And the same goes for the Rizzo trade. Anyway, nice video.
As an Orioles fan, I have to admit the Jake Arrieta trade is only bad in hindsight. His numbers with the Orioles were HORRIBLE and progressively getting worse. He was looking like a bust and he wasn't EVER gonna become who he is now in an Orioles uniform. Pedro Strop had lost all his confidence with us so we were happy to get anything.
Josh Fields for Yordan Alvarez ps. Btw find a screenshot of the "this shows how this organization doesn't want to win games" comment and expose it on your video
What about when the White Sox got eloy Jimenez and Dylan cease for Quintana? Quintana sucks now and eloy and cease are both having great years since being pulled up. But I can see how it’s not on here yet since it’s their first major league year
Although the Sox made a huge mistake in trading Tatis Jr, it’s not as bad as it sounds because it was a move that made sure Tim Anderson was going to be their shortstop for the future, and he’s an up and coming player who will be a stud in the next few years.
You could have added another Cubs trade. Ryan Dempster for Kyle Hendricks. Theo was fleecing some times with trades earlier on in his tenure with the Cubs.
I know this video was made before the 2020 season, but Lewis Brinson has improved this year. Of course, the return the Marlins got from the Brewers were not the same as the Brewers getting Christian Yelich, I agree. Anyway, that happened because the Marlins' front office were tanking the team. Under Derek Jeter's ownership, the Marlins' organization has been trying to save money.
Maybe not a bad trade but.... : Miguel Cabrera and starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for pitchers Andrew Miller, Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop, outfielder Cameron Maybin, and catcher Mike Rabelo. (Andrew Miller is the only player who's done anything but not for the Marlins).
The White Sox traded Tatis Jr. because they already have Anderson as shortstop.... They have a loaded infield, but Tatis would’ve been a great addition and a good problem to have so many position players...
Little correction here: John Buck was not traded for Marlon Byrd, he was traded WITH Byrd to the Pirates for Dilson Herrera and Vic Black. Since Herrera was later flipped for Jay Bruce, I'd say that made the initial trade even better!
The Milwaukee Brewers traded Kris Davis to Oakland for pretty much nothing. While Davis will never win a batting title he apparently will hit over 40 HRs and over 100 RBI every year forever.
I know you hate the Yankees but u have to give Brian cashman respect and acknowledgement. He traded Arnoldis Chapman for glyber Torres who is already a 2x all star and a corner stone for the Bronx bombers and isn’t even 23 yet. Yankees resigned Chapman 4 months later and he got World Series experience. Meanwhile the cubs traded their #1 prospect for a reliever who left them after winning the World Series leaving them closer less and without their shortstop/2b for the future.
Yelich didn’t want to play for the Marlins once Stanton was traded. They got back 4 prospects who are all doing extremely well outside of Brinson. Pretty fair trade my dude. You could of picked a lot worse for the Marlins. Like trading Castillo for Straily, or Paddack for Rodney even though his stats that year showed he was going to regress hard. Bad pick in my opinion.
Some trades you missed: Josh Hader and Domingo Santana for Mike Fiers, Carlos Gomez Josh Fields for Yordan Alvarez The Verlander trade The Gerrit Cole trade Chris Archer for Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows The David Price trade The German, Stanton, Paddack and Castillo trades made by the Marlins The Quintana trade The Dodgers-Reds extravaganza The Keon Broxton trade Finally... the Cano/Diaz trade That's all I can think of for Part 2
I wonder how much the intricacies between player and ball clubs effect their performance. Looking at Yelich as a Marlin vs a Brewer is almost night and day. He went from an above average base hitter to a premier slugger. Coaches work with these guys and analytics are beyond understanding, that there must be something drastically not investigated if teams make a trade of a player that just alters the output of an entire team.
Could you imagine if the Tigers traded Torkelson and Badddoo for Soroka? (Fyi, Miller’s highest similarity score happens to be with Soroka in his age 22 season) Obviously Torkelson > Swanson and Soroka > Miller but just something to think about.
Nice video but in my opinion you’re missing the biggest worst trade. I’m talking about Justin Verlander going for Franklin Perez (played 4 minor league games this year), Daz Cameron (had a .214 average in the minors), and Jake Rogers (had a .125 average in the mlb). Meanwhile Verlander has drank from the Astros fountain of youth juice and has become one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. He wasn’t even this good in his prime with Detroit.
are you smoking crack his prime in detroit is 10 times better than his prime in houston and the tigers shed payroll and beeded to blow it up and camron is improved at hitting and he a top runner and feilder
@Caleb TheVerburger I’m baffled with your argument here. When did I mention he was better in Houston than in Detroit? My point is that this trade hurt the Tigers. Yes he is not in his “prime”, but he is a top major league starter. Also since becoming an Astro, he lowered his opponent’s average against him to below .200 and topped his record for most strikeouts in 2 different seasons with the astros. He was undoubtedly a great Tiger but overall when the tigers traded him to the Astros they lost value by getting rid of him. Daz Cameron has only batted .193 at the major league level while Verlander has remained a true mlb ace. Cameron’s potential could be higher per say but as of now that trade is a major win for the astros who got a world star pitcher vs the tigers who got a minor league player with a very sub par major league level debut.
The return from the Christian Yelich still is actually beginning to play out very nicely for the Marlins. All four of those prospects have now been able to perform at the major league level, and Christian Yelich hasn’t been the same in two years. Meanwhile, the Marlins are building their team around those four players. If anything, it’s turning into a flop for the Brewers.
Pirates trading meadows for archer is the worst in the last 10 years. astros trading away hader to MIL for fiers and Gomez should be an honorable mention. The dodgers trading away yordan Alvarez to the Astros for josh fields... who gave up back to back bombs in game 2 of the ‘17 WS is turning out to be a terrible trade
some of these were clearly bad trades when they were made like the Swanson-Miller trade and some are just hindsight being 20/20. I keep up with prospects and tatis wasn't a highly touted prospect or anything when that trade was made. he had just come out of the DR. The White Sox also had a young TA7 so they weren't really looking for a SS of the future at the time.
