I've had a Saturn since way back in the mid-'90s when it was new, but only in recent years have discovered all of the gems from Japan that I completely missed out on. I've really been enjoying games like Silhouette Mirage, Puyo Puyo Sun, and all of the awesome Capcom fighters. Great video as always!
I had a modded one so I could play pirated copies. Got a lot of japanese only games but really played a few ones(shmups and fighting games) because of language barrier.
This video shows why some of us modded our Saturns to handle imports. Just to add some additional bits of info for those who care... Sakura Wars played out like an anime series, complete with its opening, and "trailers" for the next "episode" in the game. There's also a game mod out there for an English translation. Of course, there are other English patches out there for other Saturn games. Also, I thought that Grandia looked familiar. Grandia 2 was released in the US for the Dreamcast.
Soon Saturn will be supported on Mister FPGA. It is a necessity for gracious living. Guy making the core is caught up in a major conflict though... wishing em all the best.
This is awesome! Really good number of gems from Japan. Some of the best titles. Castlevania Symphony of the Night has Maria as a playable character. I absolutely love Saturn. Being a more of a fan of 2D games and fantastic arcade ports Saturn was my favorite of it's era. I lost interest in consoles after Sega stopped making them. Japanese titles interest me a ton.
This was a really fun watch. As someone who only started collecting for the Japanese Saturn late last year I do enjoy these looks into the library. Happy to see that I'm aware of most of these titles. It's been fun discovering the library although it's a shame some fun titles go for silly money.
Tryrush Deppy and Super Tempo have two of the best 2D graphics I've seen for a platformer along with Keio Flying Squadron 2 and Astal. I can't get Super Tempo to work on the Yaba Shanshiro 2 emu. Saturn is still a fascinating console.
Just subbed to this channel. This brought back so many good memories. Me and my friends had modded Saturn's back then to import so many games that did not release here. We had connections. So I was fortunate to play some of these games back when they first came out.
I got a $50 Saturn from the big Blockbuster Video closeout, and picked up a TON of games when we visited Japan. I picked up so many many fun dirt cheap used games in Akihabara, like that Macross DYRL game, two of the Gundam Side Story games... I also imported a number of games full price, including Radiant Silvergun, Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight (a.k.a. Symphony of the Night), Sakura Taisen 1 and 2, X-Men vs Streetfighter, Marvel vs Streetfighter, Dungeons and Dragons, Pocket Fighter. Some of those are kinda hard to come by today, so I'm glad I picked them up when they were easy to import.

Wow, I was expecting a long list, but a lot of those games looked like absolute gems. Sadly almost none are 3d platformers, so really not much to change what was the rage in the west back then.. but still no wonder the Saturn won in Japan.
If I had a Sega Saturn, I would get an Action Replay Plus RAM cartridge for it because the Action Replay Plus bypasses the Saturn's region encoding, allowing Saturn owners to play imported games on USA, PAL region and Japanese Saturn consoles.
Oh yes, Twinkle Star Sprites. AKA Discount Touhou Project. Even though I think TSS came out first and the first Touhou wasn't a shooter... Also, I totally agree that someone should translate Princess Crown. EDIT: Turns out someone had been for the last 10 years but real life things got in the way.
Super Tempo is a very funny parody of modern life. The story is actually amusing and engaging. If the game were to receive an international release then more people could appreciate the humor of the game.

Finally someone that knows about how good the Saturn actually was. I enjoyed mine way more than my Best Friend at the time did his 64 couldn't wait to get import stuff.
Crazy how $20 - $30 games are now hundreds of dollars used like radiant silver gun, Saturn Bomberman, Dungeons and dragons collection and Castlevania. Castlevania on Saturn also has additional areas and bosses
There's really no other language you can learn besides Japanese that opens up this little secret world of games that no one in the western world has ever really got to play. Just another great reason to learn Japanese.
I had 8 of the games on the list. Sakura tisen. 1&2. Princess Crown, Macross, Thunderforce 5 and the thunder force gold packs. Dragonforce 2, Grandia and Radiant silver gun. I purchased Radiant silver gun for $70 because it was new and people thought it looked pretty good but nobody knew that it was gonna blow up like it did at that time. I ended up donating my copy to a gaming museum it's in mint condition, spine card and everything.
Where I was in the USA, everyone who was into importing Saturn games was all over Radiant Silvergun. We all bought it, and we all thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. So, I was surprised, many years later, that Radiant Silvergun was considered rare and expensive. But it still makes sense to me, since I expect most of us who bought it wouldn't want to sell it.
I loved that you could get classic scalers like Chase HQ and Galaxy Force on the Saturn. Really missed potential not to release those more widely, given its 2d powerhouse capabilities.
According to Wikipedia, a ridiculously high 75% of all Saturn games were Japanese exclusives. 785 games, and that's not counting non-game software or Saturn game compilations. If you did 80 games per video, it'd take you 10 videos to cover them all! (No, I'm not hinting that I want you to actually do that, just illustrating what an absurd amount of games that is.)
Just to let everyone else know a little extra information about Prikura Daisakusen in case anyone wasn't aware, it is also a spin off of the Power Instinct series starring Clara. Who is in fact one of the reoccurring playable fighters since Power Instinct 2. Clara was always my most favorite as I am a sucker for magical girls and magical girl stuff so I love that she managed to break out into her own game.
Who knew that the Sega Saturn had so many great games in Japan?! I might have to pick up a Sega Saturn soon with an action replay so it can run pseudo Saturn on it and play burnt games.
Before watching the video, I have to say that "Willy Wombat" is probably my favorite Japan and Saturn Exclusive game. It´s a Platformer with visuals that at glance look like Grandia (3D Environments with Sprites for characters and items), it plays really well, and thanks to the full English voice acting even people like me that don´t know any japanese can easily play and understand the game.
My opinion is unpopular I think but I feel that Saturn's polygon games are the best and the 2D games are largely forgettable. As a Saturn fanboy I remember the Saturn for its non-exclusive ports, polygon based driving and racing games, its ports of Mortal Kombat games, rail shooters, fighting games such as Virtua Fighter 2 or Fighter's Megamix and its ports of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. Now technically some of those are actually old time 2D games and I'm mentioning them because they are NOT Saturn exclusives. What's 'exclusive' about them is that they play and look a bit different on the Saturn and those ports alone justify Saturn's short run and continued legacy.
I thought the Saturn did both styles really well... I'm more of a 2D fan though but I liked both on the Saturn.... The Saturn was the last system I was truelly excited for.. I was done with new systems after that.
I never knew, that the animated series, blue seed, had a video game, I didn't think, that it was popular enough, to get a video game, it probably had a lot of merch, but a video game, that was something, that never crossed my mind.
The Saturn good oodles and oodles of mostly cheap cash grab anime games. You name it ... if it's anime from the 1990s there's likely at least one Saturn game for it. But some were pretty good, like Rayearth and the Gundam Side Story games.
Castlevania SotN's Saturn port had 4 more zones plus you could play as Maria Renard. Plus, both Lunar PSX games were also released on the Saturn, but only in Japan. As a matter of fact, all 3 games of the Lunar series that were released on the Saturn were only released in Japan
Princes Crown has an English patch and Final Fight Revenge -albeit crude but today’s standards - had the highest resolution of the 5th generation and was the only polygonal game to utilize the ram expansion.
I got one for my birthday two years ago and it's quickly becoming my favorite system of all time. Gamecube still takes it (my first console that was mine, not a hand-me down, so a bit unfair competition) but the Saturn is right there. Panzer Dragoon Saga has become tied for my favorite RPG of all time, (Japanese copies go for 60 bucks!) The Capcom and SNK Fighters, all the Shmups. Night Strikers S is my favorite super scaler... All the fan translations, **chefs kiss** What a wonderful machine Also I know evryone calls it Linkle Liver Story, but I feel like it's supposed to be Wrinkle River Story, since their R's and L's are the same sound. My favorite import would have to be Soukyougurantai, Radiant Silvergun, or Alpha 3. All fun and sweet to look at
I've just bought a Japanese model 1 Saturn recently with a Fenrir and ReSaturn PSU because "Europe" haha i agree with everything you posted it's becoming one of my favourite systems just behind the ps1 for me

Should there be a Saturn Mini in a recent future I would buy it on Day One, 1) precisely because I struggle to understand the system and 2) because it's very hard to emulate properly.
Just imagine Sega had their white/grey systems instead of black, never released the 32 X, made the Saturn have backwards compatibility with Mega Drive games & didn’t rush it out (which upset developers and retailers). The lack of backwards compatibility is the biggest mistake; it was one of the huge advantages they had over the PlayStation and they wasted it.
How would that work? Use the ram / memory expansion port in a way where Mega Drive cartridges could be read and recognized? Considering Sega's consoli add-on style approach, maybe they should have just made the 32x be a Saturn adapter that allowed Genesis carts to run, like that SNES Gameboy cart.

You should do a video about the GBA games that never left Japan. The GBA is in my opinion, the Saturn of Nintendo handhelds, since so many good games never left Japan, like Elemix, Elemental Gelade, Metalgun Slinger, Starfy, Magical Vacation, and Custom Robo Advance. Infact, Japan got the definitive versions of Metroid Fusion and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
