completely spot on LD!! the future seems very dark--this stuff isn't going away, isn't going to be fixed. on the contrary, the current model will be doubled down. it will become increasingly clear to both corporation and consumer that the past of our cherished medium is a threat to its future. i expect a full-scale war on R*MS that makes the current situation look childish. humans have limited gaming hours and they must be monetized. most of us play these silly things as a brief escape from reality but "photorealism" (and from that, unsustainable economics and all the problems you've outlined here) is pursued without end--and who could've predicted--yet another factor to make every game feel "the same."
If only AAA developers would accept our lord and savior indie games into their hearts. Who knows what gems like Life of Black Tiger and Souls-like Rogue-like Metroidvania could teach them going forward? Praise be to Infinite Runner 6969.
All I'm seeing is more than likely 1 of the big three gaming console manufacturers funding slimy investors to find anything they can against the biggest rival they have to date. This stinks of corporate games.
Dutchie here, and imo the Master System is the superior 8-bit console. Loved mine, sold it, and regretted it ever since. Never was I drawn to the Nes, had friends who had one, but I was much more interested in the 16 bit consoles by then. Not long ago I found a Famiclone with some games, and find it way more interesting and fun than the original Nes. Can't find any info on it though. Has Virtual City on the front instead of Family Computer.

Nintendo is winning. Ancient console + more games = massive profits with comparatively lower investment. We need a Nintendo competitor. Maybe it’s Steam?
Eastern developers are our only hope left. Theyre the only ones still trying to make fun games and not trying to shove politics or microtransactions down our throats.
I've been buying games at $20 and under since 2016 now I rarely buy games at full price now and I've never bought a single game at $70 or higher at launch. The only games I buy at full price are indie games or lower budget games with lower price tags. And F pre order and F always online games and F sports games. They make companies want to make billions every time they release a new game without putting in effort.
I would say that I agree, except in the case of id Software and From Software. (give or take a studio or three) I mostly play retro games, indie games, and have taken to repairing old arcade PCBs now for game entertainment. :)
I notice the games that thrill me the most are AA games… they’re more fun and still look relatively good… Most importantly, no political messaging usually!
Just vote with your wallet. If the game is bad, it will fail. If it finds success in spite of you voting not to buy it, then it found an audience and you're just not part of it. The successes will influence future games, and the failures will (hopefully) be learned from, and the aspects that made it fail will be avoided. As part of the old "core" gaming demographic, I understand the frustration of no longer being the center of developer attention. We're used to being catered to, and now we're just one demographic among many. I do think certain demographics are being overestimated in size and willingness to buy games, and devs should eventually learn who will pay the bills and who will not, and shift their strategy accordingly. Trend chasing never really lasts. Thankfully, there's still all kinds of developers making all kinds of games for all kinds of people. No matter what your poison is, you can find something to play and you have something to look forward to.
I came from an Atari family, 2600 to be exact, and we didn’t have to put up with this modern AAA nonsense. True, some arcade ports translated badly on the limited hardware, but we made do with what we had, and we liked it.
Mortal Kombat has become a shitty modern AAA game. Which breaks my heart. I have loved that series for years, but it was released unfinished and has really diminished my trust in Netherealm Studios.
If you want to press forward that will be a micro transaction of $.99 a month. If you want to use other controls that will be part of our PLUS service. Play our game as a service. It's fun. You. Will. Love. It.!!!!!!!!!!
Instead of focusing on what gamers want they focus on what shareholders want. Remember when we used to have system link? Split screen campaigns? Cheat codes? Custom Level Editors? Maps and hints included in the Manual? Corpo’s decided these weren’t lucrative features and cut back to maximize revenue.
There are many creative indie games, but you only know about the good ones. There are thousands of unique indie games that just don't sell well. If you want to make creative games, you can't really make them triple A with massive budgets. You have to make lots of smaller games & hope that a few of them are hits.
I think in the end, many of the AAA industry problems come from having so many executives that don't give a shit about games or even despise them and are only here to make quick big bucks. In the end, making games is sustainable but what is not sustainable is expecting shareholders to get their quarterly profit increase forever. I agree we're probably looking at big reset in the form of a gigantic crash of AAA games in coming years.

if they could do that it would be cool. but only if its a normal console accessible to everyone to use without propaganda and supported by game company with only uncensored games without that dei crap. we need normal aestheticly pleasing games with bomb gameplay and storylines again.
