These commercials aired on CBS on October 14th, 1987
1. Sinus Excedrin
2. Pepperidge Farms Distinctive Cookies (I feel like they went a tad overboard with the "folksy northeastern accent" here)
3. Manwich
4. Sprint FONCARD
5. Fisher-Price Medical Kit
6. Ritz Bits (I definitely had this one on a tape as a kid)
7. Del Monte
8. Planters Popcorn
9. CBS Spirit Bumper
10. Suzi Wan Dinner Recipes
11. Louis Rich Turkey Breast
12. Whatzit (The point of the game is to make bad jokes at the expense of your significant other while guessing at overly cryptic game cards. Also the game board seen at 4:38 looks suspiciously like Donkey Kong)
13. Arthritis Pain Formula
14. Denorex
15. Cheese (MUST EAT CHEESE DURING THE GAME. His voice reminds me of Will Ferrell's Harry Caray impression)
16. K-Mart Outerwear Sale (A former K-Mart employee recently posted many cassette tapes of the elevator type muzak and ads that were played in their stores circa the late 80's/early 90's. They're pretty fascinating to listen to. You can check them out here: archive.org/de...)
17. CBS Station ID
18. WNEV News Update
19. Oodles Of Noodles
20. Sunbeam Bread
21. Promo for "The New Newlywed Game"
22. Medipren
23. Eggo
24. Pedia Care
25. Pepperidge Farms Distinctive Cookies
26. Memory Game (I think I had this exact version as a kid)
27. Sprint FONCARD
28. Huggies
29. "The Price Is Right" Promotional Considerations (Kitchenaid, Duration and 2000 Flushes)
30. Fisher-Price Tape Recorder
31. Fisher-Price Micro Explorer Set
32. Triaminic
33. Promo for "The Young And The Restless"
34. Woolite Spot & Stain Rug Cleaner (Footprints appearing out of nowhere? Cartoons have taught me that only ghosts do that)
35. Alka Seltzer Plus
36. Promo for "The Oldest Rookie", "Magnum, P.I." and "The Equalizer"
37. CBS Newsbreak
a. John Zaccaro found not guilty in bribery trial
b. Nobel Prize awarded
c. U.S. Trade Deficit Down
d. Reagan argues for Robert Bork as Supreme Court nominee (Bork was seen as a controversial pick for his originalist judicial philosophy and his role in Watergate's "Saturday Night Massacre". His nomination was rejected by the Democrat controlled senate later that month)
e. Bomb explosion at U.S. consulate in Barcelona, Spain
38. Doan's Pills
39. CBS Newsbreak
f. William Brock to resign as Labor Secretary to manage Bob Dole's Presidential campaign
40. CBS Station ID

I've been watching your uploads for a while now. You do an excellent job. All of these viedeos serve as cultural signposts for American Social Life during the 1980s. Not only that, but they are extremely entertaining. Thank you so much for doing this wonderful archiving.

Funny you mention those K-Mart tapes. I recently heard about them from a NeoGAF thread, and man are they ever entertaining. In much the same way your uploads are entertaining, actually. Thinking about downloading a bunch and setting up a playlist and just relaxing to K-Mart tunes all day. 5/24/92 is my favorite so far, just FYI. Has a really great cover of a song called "Welcome to the Edge" which I discovered after some research was all but ignored over here but HUGE in Japan. Stuff like that is why I'm so glad those tapes were uploaded. So much odd, interesting stuff that would likely never be heard again if not for that guy uploading them.

Planters Popcorn??? don't remember that....I most definitely remember Planter's Cheez Balls though and miss the hell out of them...one of the top 80s foods I dream would come back

Whatzit was and maybe still is a syndicated newspaper puzzle, which is what that board game was based on. Wacky Wordies is a similar type of puzzle that has appeared in Games/WOrld of Puzzles magazines.

+jason3fc That's awesome, and I'm glad toys like that still exist for kids. Makes you wonder how many people were inspired by them as children. I wouldn't be surprised if a generation of doctors had these as kids.

If that Planters commercial aired today, they'd have to put a disclaimer that the popcorn wouldn't really make you float. Otherwise, some moron would probably try to sue.
@skystarless

I probably watched these the day they aired. Before I started school, I always watched The Price Is Right with my mom in the mornings. Then she would watch The Young and the Restless and I would have to go play, because we only had one TV. I'm so old.

Sign of the times. Popcorn and long distance telephone service were advertised like crazy back then.

I have a question - for anyone who can answer it. Why is it that the commercials from the late 80's-mid 90's look and sound better than the commercials of today? These commercials look and sound more authentic, and full-of-life. It's like music CD's of the 80's sounded more "real", while most albums of today suffer from "loudness wars". Sure, most commercials of today are crossing into the "HD look", but they all just look and feel "lifeless".
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 9 лет назад
+Matthew J. Boone Simple answer: probably all of these were shot on 35mm film (or at least Super 16mm) and were in many cases were shot, framed and lit in much the same way that a big budget Hollywood movie would be. I feel like most commercials made today use mid-grade HD cameras that do not approach film quality and also use very flat, lifeless lighting. As an artform or meaningful cultural artifact, IMO, the commercial is dead.
@Silvergun_Raven

80sCommercialVault That makes sense. Thank you! :)
@JCole78

+Matthew J. Boone I completely agree. I think it's because today's commercials have no depth or soul, so they don't really put much effort into them.

CNN and Fox News is loaded with commercials on medications. I guess the older folk watch those channels, but it's a bit repetitive.

Great compilation of commercial. Recall nearly all of them. The Doan's Pills commercial is one hell a memory for me. I remember taking some because I had some back pain and it did help but about a year later I had numbness along my left arm and leg. Turned out I had a malignant tumor on my spinal cord in the area I had pain. What an ass kicker.

Oh snap, I had that Fisher-Price Medical Kit. Eggo + 80s = Eleven from Stranger Things. That PediaCare packaging was still used 20+ years later. Wonder how much “The Rookie” has in common with “The Oldest Rookie.” I didn’t know that Bob Dole ran for president before 1996.
@tinamarie86
@tinamarie86 4 года назад
I didn't know Bob Dole ran for president before 96 either, just like I didn't know that Joe Biden ran for president one other time before 2008. I guess, as the saying goes, the third time's the charm (hopefully).

So much medicine. We're US more sick then or now?
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 9 лет назад
+BBOY ASIST It has more to do with the fact that these aired during the Price is Right at 10 in the morning. I assume they always carpeted that show with ads for cold/pain relievers to target the people sick at home in bed.

+Brian Deal Only these days they have to say: "Side effects may include: headaches, stomachaches, bleeding ulcers, abdominal pain.....and for erections lasting more than 4 hours, see a doctor."
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 9 лет назад
All of the products here are OTC cold/pain relievers. Serious side effects are usually only found on prescription meds, which could not be advertised on TV until 1997.

A few of these products don't seem to exist, or at least I've never heard of them. Mediprem? Suzi Wan? Denorex? Oodles of Noodles?
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 9 лет назад
Just because you haven't heard of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Several of these products don't appear to be made anymore or are no longer sold in the US market. Medipren is just a brand of ibuprofen, not sure if it's still made. Denorex is still made and was probably the most popular brand of dandruff shampoo back then. I've posted numerous ads for it in the past.

Not sure how much time passed between when the episode was taped for broadcast and the airdate, but the ads airing on the Price is Right would be from the last broadcast to air before Bob Barker stopped dying his hair; as the next day's show featured Bob with white hair (just during the playing of the Punch-a-Bunch game in that episode; model Janice Pennington grabbed some chalk to update the picture of Barker on the $10,000 bill prop).
