These commercials aired on CBS on December 22nd, 1985
1. "A Christmas Carol" Commercial Bumper (Brought to you by IBM. IBM sponsored this movie, so don't expect a lot of variety with the ads in this volume LOL)
2. IBM Typewriters
3. IBM Personal Computer
4. IBM Personal Computer AT (With creepy Charlie Chaplin impersonator)
5. IBM Job Training Centers
6. "A Christmas Carol" Commercial Bumpers
7. IBM Faculty Loan Program
8. IBM (I am guessing that in real life none of these old men had any interest in or knowledge about computers)
9. IBM Pro Printer
10. CBS Station ID
11. CBS Sportsbreak
12. "A Christmas Carol" Commercial Bumper
13. CBS Sportsbreak ("The Fridge" and the Bears would win the Super Bowl about a month after this)
14. "A Christmas Carol" Commercial Bumper
15. IBM Selectric Typewriter (I'm picturing a spell check on a typewriter using the red light and buzzer from Operation)
16. IBM Automation (Yikes at the perm on Wayne)
17. IBM Personal Computer
18. "A Christmas Carol" Commercial Bumper
19. IBM Writing To Read (This kid has that creepy, detached adult personality that many child actors have)
20. IBM Service Representative
21. Merry Christmas from IBM

Hey, at (2:20) the actor/comedian Robert Townsend as "Eddie" the guy in IBM commercial LOL He starred in his own The WB sitcom called The Parent 'Hood" that aired for 4 or 5 seasons in the mid-90s and he is also widely known for the 'hood classic flick "The Five Heartbeats" and "Hollywood Shuffle"!

The child actor in the kid ad is Scott Grimes. He made a career in the 80's of playing the "nerdy looking, but so self-assured that he's cool" kid in series like "Who's The Boss" and "Charles In Charge."

The 8" floppy I remember my dads work actually used the kind before the protective jacket... The were like super thin records...

This was the only time I remember seeing one company do all the ads in a show

I've seen so many different versions of "A Christmas Carol" on several TV shows but I've never seen the original.

+Ricky Waugh This '84 TV movie definitely would not be the "original". The first film adaptation was made in 1901.

They actually did this another year for this version of "Christmas Carol" featuring all "M.A.S.H." actors shilling IBM products. I used to have it on tape.

Is that Eric Troyer singing the IBM Typewriter song? Sounds like him.

80sCommercialsVol.IBM! In the 80s, IBM would buy all the advertising time for many shows, so this isn't unusual.

I think they had a hand in producing the George C. Scott version of "A Christmas Carol" and had exclusive advertising rights. It premiered a year before this airing with IBM sponsorship as well.

Wow..not a movie trailer in sight lol.. i guess this was the first example of a broadcast having "limited commercial interruption"
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 8 лет назад
This wasn't even the first time they had done it with this movie, as it premiered in '84 with the same corporate sponsor. They've had "Limited Commercial Interruption" for special event type programs since the 60's. An example I can think of is the Rod Serling scripted "A Carol for Another Christmas" in 1964, where Xerox paid to air it without commercials. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Carol_for_Another_Christmas#Production

I wonder if any company today would have the guts to make a commercial touting automation as a good thing. I've always heard that this version of "A Christmas Carol" was the best movie version, but I've never seen it. Anyone know if it's good or not?
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 8 лет назад
+Boomska316 It's definitely one of the better ones, and George C. Scott is always fun. But the 1951 British version "Scrooge" with Alister Sim is typically regarded as the best, most faithful version.

Is that the black and white one?
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 8 лет назад
+Boomska316 Yes, it's in black and white. But there are two black and white versions I know of off the top of my head, the 1938 MGM version with Reginald Owen and the 1951 British version.

That 1951 version is my favorite too, but this one is a close second. I love the music (especially the main theme song) in the 1984 version.
