These commercials aired on KPTV in November and December of 1980

3. TV Spot for "Song Of The South" (It's very rare to see any advertising for this. I wish they'd just release it on Blu Ray as a limited release for collectors and slap a bunch of warnings on it instead of just pretending it doesn't exist)

Woolworth, Montgomery Ward, K-mart.....wow! How about Jamesway, Caldor, Two Guys, Bradlees & Ames? Now it's WalMart, Target, Amazon. So much for competition. Record Vacuum...who woulda thought there would be a market for them almost 40 years later?

Thanks for the memories! Not just of the commercials, but I actually lived in Portland around this time. 7:46 I was in kindergarten and I got to meet Tom Peterson in person at one of his stores circa '79-'80. I was also on the Ramblin Rod show at KPTV and I also remember the day Mt. St. Helens erupted. Memories.. sigh.. thanks so much!

9:18 I have that record. Bought it at the Salvation Army 14 years ago when I finally got serious about my record collection. That was back before hipsters made vinyl make a comeback. You had to scour thrift stores, ma&pop record stores and antique stores for old records. Now you can get new records at Walmart.

2:25 that bank shot game reminded me of the pocket video games they had back then (football, basketball, soccer).It was the size of a calculator. I had the basketball game,but I figured out all the patterns so quick, that you would get bored. It wasn't bad though considering it late 1970s.

People still don't know how to cook in a microwave. When I tell people I cook steak in the microwave, I get nasty looks. The power level button is your best friend. Too many people just hit the start button and do everything on high.

I had the 1982 McDonald's calendar which had facts about other countries. Coloring was (and still is) fun and I enjoyed it. They used that "fart synthesizers" intro to Bugs Bunny for YEARS, and I'm probably still traumatized. Fred Meyer is still an institution here in Portland, and you can pretty much find anything there. And the Morrison store is closed!

I remember that Cheerios Commercial:)!!! However, it is profoundly sad that Toy R Us is gone in the U.S.:(!! I NEVER would have believed in the 80s that there will be no more large toy stores in the U.S. in the 21st century:(!! However, I so remember all those songs from Abba, Blonde, etc.:)!! I also remember Chutes and Ladders as well as I so fondly remember Atari Video Games that my Brother and I played together as Kids: )!! However, It is a shame that the Pottery Craft by Gabriel is not still being made:(. Thanks for sharing these fun memories and a nostalgic time for me as a Kid:)!!!

Mitt Romney is why Toys R Us went out of business. He's also the reason that KB Toys went out of business as well. His company, Bain Capital, buys companies with borrowed money, then makes the company pay the loan back. About 25% of the companies can't stand the burden of the additional debt and they go under. Sear's has been killed by similar practices. It's been sucked dry by the management company without caring about the workers or community.

These are from late 1980. The identity of the decade had not really took form yet. And many of them likely date back to 1979 or earlier.

TighelanderII The laserdisc is Japanese and has burned in subtitles during the songs...it's really not an ideal way to watch the movie, despite being an official release. There are now fanmade HD transfers of both 35mm and 16mm film elements floating around out there.

I bought a reel of commercials from 1970, and was surprised that they were on 16mm film. It shouldn't be surprising though. 16mm was probably overkill for the low resolution of TVs back then.

This is the stuff I find most fascinating. The pre-1985 stuff. I don’t have as much interest for later 80s or most 90s ads (Don’t get me wrong, not that I don’t enjoy those when I go through old VHS tapes but they are not my main interest, probably because that’s the era I find the most when I go Though old tapes. Same goes for stuff recorded in 2005 and later.) but I love the early 2000s mostly for personal reasons. But I really love the 1970s and early 1980s the most!!

Love those K-tel records! Even though the earlier 70s ones butchered the tracks to fit 22 songs on one record they stopped doing that about 1975-ish. They give you a better idea of what was really on the radio at the time better than some oldies station.

Because it's misunderstood and politicized by people, a vast number of whom have never actually seen it or understand its context? Regardless of your opinion of the film, the fact that the first movie to have a black male actor win an academy award is completely unavailable for people to watch and is completely swept under the rug is a travesty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Baskett But I guess his legacy or life doesn't matter.

80sCommercialVault Thanks for the reply. I agree completely. I vaguely remembered seeing it on Wide World of Disney on TV in the ‘70s as a kid. After years of searching, I finally found the best official Japanese LD release, but it cost me. Now the same thing is happening to Gone With The Wind for the same reasons, also largely by people who have never seen it. And with no regard for Hattie McDaniel, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African-American to win an Academy Award. I love your channel, btw; thanks for preserving the memories.

Me too! One year, 1979 I believe, somehow one of the electronics store had a tape of Star Wars (this was before it was on On-TV or VHS - both 1982) and my parents parked us on a bench outside the store and we watched it twice while they shopped!

"Nutty Professor" aired 11/22/80. The Timbers-Earthquakes NASL indoor soccer game was played 11/30/80 (Timbers won 4-1). "Scrooge" aired 12/6/80.

@17:07 is Jayne Modean. I recognized her from the 1987 Christmas episode of “Cheers”. Apparently she was a popular model in the 70s-early 80s. She married, had a son with and divorced Dave Coulier in the 1990s.

Ah the days when a Microwave oven was a big ticket item. $299.99 would be relatively expensive for a microwave even in today’s time but in the 80’s that was equivalent to about $700. Funny to think that you can buy a microwave today for as little as 50 bucks. Technology really does get cheaper over the years.

A lot of the cheaper prices are because it's not made in America anymore. Today there made in places that sometimes have nets to prevent the low-paid workers from committing suicide.

Car interiors were *extremely* basic back then. The first car cup holders were in the 1983 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager.

No cup holders....cruise control was optional,.....electric windows also an option. You should have driven in the 1960's when I got my first car. Wow. No FM radio, roll-down windows only, power steering was optional, and no radial tires (Bias Ply). Cup holder ??....what is THAT ??

The Timbers versus the Earthquakes was for Indoor Soccer. The Major Indoor Soccer League existed from 1978 to 1992 (Thanks Wikipedia!)

It was cool seeing the commercial for indoor soccer. But the league the Timbers and Earthquakes were playing in at the time was the North American Soccer League (NASL). The NASL was a great outdoor soccer league that lasted from 1969-1984. They ran a professional indoor league from 79-82. The MISL was a separate league.

The Timbers vs. Earthquakes promo does belong here. The NASL Indoor competition was separate from the regular (outdoor) NASL; the 1980-81 Indoor season started in November as best as I can tell, with playoffs in February-March.

@80scommercialvault, with Disney+ releasing some other titles with antiquated cultural perspectives (albeit with detailed warnings, which I think is a good idea) I am surprised that they haven’t released “The Song of the South.” Maybe they will eventually. Side note: if you haven’t got Disney+ yet, it is awesome. Love the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda!

If they’re not going to put up “Make Mine Music” up for its depiction of hillbillies (which I would guess offends approximately zero people) I don’t think they’ll ever release SOTS in any form. The smart thing to do would to let a label like Criterion release it with commentary tracks, bonus features etc and not as a mainstream release.

What happened to those Fred Meyer centers? Are they still around? Seems like you only here about Walmart & Target in other parts of the world 🤭

Fred Meyer is a chain based in Oregon and can only be found in the Northwest United States. It merged with Kroger in 1998: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Meyer

If you’re interested in Song of the South, the podcast “You Must Remember This” has a great six-episode series about it. Also, I’ve seen it and TBH it’s not a great movie. In addition to the mild racism, the live action segments are painfully boring.

I don’t get how it’s even “mildly” racist. The smartest person in the movie is Uncle Remus. And the movie is set during reconstruction, not the antebellum period as is often incorrectly assumed. I feel like most of the people who complain about the racial content have never actually seen it and are repeating stuff they’ve heard about it from other people who haven’t seen it, creating sort of an endless feedback loop of ignorance. Disney plays into it by not making the film accessible for people to watch and evaluate it for themselves.

80sCommercialVault I agree that Disney, by locking the film away, has allowed it to be built up into this bigger deal than it really is. I think “racially insensitive” might be a better term for it than racist. It presents black people in the reconstruction era south as being perfectly happy continuing to work on a plantation for the white owners, which I believe is what most critics object to. At any rate, racial elements aside, it’s just not Disney’s best work, and - again- I think the embargo of it has given it a reputation as a lost treasure that it doesn’t really deserve.
