I grew up on screaming 2 strokes. I had a CR 250r that I still remember fondly. When everything went 4 stroke I honestly couldn't bear the sound of them. lol....So it's great to see the old 80s CR's cleaning up like this.
That CR500 is no joke! Years ago, a buddy I used to work with took a CR500 motor and swapped it into his 250R racing quad. He had to do a little welding for it to mount properly, but he got it to work mint. That quad was balls to the walls scary fast! I was following him in my car once while he rode it home from the trails, and after a red light turned green, i watched as he left 50 yard strips down the street ripping power ban through every gear. That monstrosity of a 4 wheeler was a loud, eye watering fast, force to be reckoned with, for sure. He smoked Banshees and ate quadzillas for breakfast. Definitely the craziest motorized vehicle I've ever had the pleasure to hold onto as it took me for a ride lol.
Psh! Yea they run ok , and they all seemed like a beast untill I fully built a 93 xr600r into an animal that literally walks away from them and weighs….213 lbs 🔥 Old 4 stroke with new 450 pumper carb alone is insane ! Not a 500 out there even my buddys kx500 AF won’t beat it ! 4 stroke for life
@@alphaomega3633 lmao yep knew you would laugh 🤘 I’m not knocking them they rip but this isn’t your average xr600r 💪. More than happy to meet ya and run them no matter were I have to travel it’s worth the proof lol🤘 Not even a AF kx500 can hang !
Try kx500 BLASTER !!!!! 😵😵😵💀💀 oh boy that was bad ….. no extensions nothing and (huge mistake) lol twist throttle 🤦♂️ Broken femur later!!!! I sold it 🤣🤣🤣😆😆
Crazy right? A fully built nitro methane hill climber looks faster than a stock swingarm and engine 450. Who would've thought? Would you like to compare power output when they're both stock? Modern 450s make ~63. CR500s made 55-56.
@@davidbrennan5 the early CR500s made mid 50s. I own one and have the certificate of origin. I agree it's all rider, but they ARE weaker. That's just a fact.
@@StrykerV8 The 85 was the most powerful stock, shorter stroke and better ignition, Honda detuned them every year after until 92. Honda Claimed the 85 had 67.59 HP real world was closer to 61.
@@davidbrennan5 and that's why I own an 85. Would like to purchase an 87 as well. Unfortunately, my 2020 is more powerful. Again, for the third time, they only made about mid 50s. Show me a stock dyno sheet making more. You can't, because they don't.
Crazy power but not a good run. The 450 has more easily used power, and had a great run. I'm sure rider skill played a part as well but that's a pretty good snap-shot of the two bikes.
I raced an 86 CR500 in the open class years ago, a beast to hang onto! But hands down of all the dirt bikes I rode and raced over the years the big 500 CR was my favorite. Never have I been so thrilled to be terrified.
People are never going to understand two strokes are always going to be faster than four stroke but four strokes are always going to feel better and be better at trail riding then two strokes
I did a lot of pipe calculations as a young man and I always thought you could never fit an optimum sized pipe on a 500cc bike. Figured you'd only ever see one on a 500c speedway car.. That black and red CR 500 proved me wrong.
In 1988,I ran a Pro Circuit Pipe that Bones put on my CR 500 when he revalved my rear suspension. It made the bike have much more usable power. After that pipe, that bike was a rocketship.
2 strokes are everywhere except the in America very few compared to every other country ,only dirt bikes here, in some countries there are more 2 strokes than cars .
Reminded me when we were little kids, tearin up my brother’s ‘Zuki 125 climbing hills, (sorry bro’ that wasn’t my bike to bust up…iou), then we we started ridin the CR250, we were so little-it was so huge to us, mad power, alway catchin air on little 6’ dips, so fun, and suddenly the sun went down. We didn’t know a day had passed so quickly. You are only allowed a given # to spend. Great video, bad-A bikes, thank you!
thanks for posting ken ive been riding open class machinery since i was 18 i can say i am one of the few people still walking on planet earth who has owned a cr 500 the kicker ripped a big hole in my boot tx 10 honda line
I love these video's man! Watching a bunch of 500 2-strokes totally unleashed is awesome. Thanks much for posting them Ken. The 4-strokes that rock are 750-1000's and the Harley's.
Got to love the 2strokes love the sound and speed .quickness .the 4strokes just sound like there struggling and puking all the way up the hill .but great vid bud godbless and stay safe
@@MiikeyLawless Same amount of work, in twice the rotations... Bouncing off of the rev limiter all the way up the hill so the engine doesn't come apart to keep up with the 2t is 100% struggling, puking and farting to get up the hill. 😂
Two strokes gone, solar panels here, electric cars here, diesel particulate filters and DEF here, big V8 gas guzzling muscle cars soon to be gone…. What happened to America???
2 strokes ruled this meet. 1 thing that chaps my ass though is people laying on the rev limiter. Obviously they think it sounds cool, but I think it sounds like they know nothing about engines.
Probably the wrong hobby for you if you dont like rev limiters.... Just saying. you sound like a hoot to be around... None of these bikes are going klack klack klack klack. Kopy Karen? Its not cool to you, so its not cool to anyone else? Rear Admiral Funpants here probably thinks drifting wastes tires too. What possibly could be the problem? Excessive engine wear? you think youre going to float a valve? Its a bloody dirt bike and it's called preventitive maintenance. These are hillclimb bikes, most of an will never see more than 10 hours of run time a YEAR... No one is competing on a 120hr old piston. That old cr500 is worth as much as a new Subaru, pretty sure they started it with an impact.
@@ericoverdorff8880I get what you're saying, but no. You will not find a single article or professional document that states hitting the rev limiter does anything but wear out wearable items ie rings and bearings, that are intended to be replaced.. Obviously holding it WOT bouncing off the limiter for anything other than a reminder to shift or to panic rev you could consider unnessessary wear. But that is it What I am saying is a 3 tenths of a second hold on the limiter isn't enough to heat up the rings to cause excessive wear, at normal running temperatures its just one more revolution, your engine does not care or know if it's underload. Your tune might... Most of these bikes idle rich as fuck and lean out underload at WOT. so they don't wash the rings at 12k. If you want to show off your 2000 dollar exhaust. So be it. Now. If the bikes were popping and spit when they were wraping them out in neutral, dumping fuel into the head washing the rings... Since I hear, nore see any of THAT. So yeah bro... There pretty Damn cool. Cept Nicole with the ponytail..... But the bike still sounded good and he didnt hurt it in the slightest coming off as a squid. With the cleanest gear and boots of the day.
idc what these other people think if you rev a engine without a load on it your bond to eventually sling a rod, it doesn’t take 120 hours to sling a rod you can you it right after a perfect break in if you just rev the crap out of a engine without a load on it
We had a sandpit near our farm in upstate NY back in the 80's. Everyone tried to climb it,.....the only one ever to do it was my ported 250-r with wooly boogers. Long live 2 strokes!!
Didn’t realize this was a Kaplan america video till the first 2 stroke came on and i heard his voice. Great video!! Love me some 2stroke hill climbing!! Rock on!!
I’ve only been on dirt bikes a few times, I stuck to my cruiser but with my limited dirt experience the 2 stroke I was on felt crazier than the 1 linger did.
This vid so smacks the freakin' crap out of that hill. The bikes are quite frankly phenomenal and so are the riders who have nads bigger than King Kong and don't worry the gal is all guts & skill too make no error they are as equally fantastic to watch as the boys. I rode both 4 stroke singles [500cc & 600cc] & my 1981 Suzuki RM 465X during the '80s over here in New Zealand. I was an apprentice automotive engineer on GM trucks & buses [Bedford & Isuzu] I swapped my 1979 Honda XR500 for the 1981 Suzuki RM 465X [mate's bike]. The RM465X was the most powerful motorcycle I have ever ridden - it was an ex-race bike and I think it may have been re-bored. The powerband was so vicious I fitted a Boyesen Reed to the inlet manifold to try and smoothen the powerband out and it worked perfectly. I wanted to do high speed max running over long gravel roads and so tall geared the bike [smaller less teeth on the rear sprocket and a bigger more teeth front sprocket sorry I don't remember the exact number of teeth for both sprockets. I ran the engine on Bel Ray 2 stoke oil that was very expensive at the time. I considered also using ethanol/methanol blend for fuel, however as I couldn't afford to pay for repairs if the engine blew/seized or the top of the piston melted due to excess heat from the incorrect fuel/oil ratio, so I just used pump petrol at the time. Still the bike performed excellently over long gravel road running at max speed. Unfortunately the bike never had a speedo so I couldn't measure speed. Plus I was light in weight [70kg] and 170cm/5ft 7in in height. I actually convinced a mate to pillion with me and the extra weight proved beneficial for traction. There were the odd corner/bends in the road and so I could power-slide the bike exiting and that was more fun than ever. I have ridden many powerful and fast motorcycles over 10 years during the '80s here in NZ. The story to my final bike; a 1985 Kawasaki GPZ 750 Ninja is worth reading. Here is a pic of my 1981 Suzuki RM 465X: www.flickr.com/photos/35707376@N00/50855348636/in/album-72157713681398176/
My cousin bought the first 1985 CR 500. It had the most horsepower of all the years. It is one hell of a hill climber. Always smoked the 4 strokes on the way up!!
I am an old retired Diesel Mechanic and I was a Detroit Diesel Specialist, nothing creates raw Horsepower at the throttle like a 2 stroke. Bike or other wise less moving parts and power on every stroke.Beast they are.
Man nothing like the sound of an.old school 2 stroke! Always loved hondas when i used to ride! My brother had a cr 80 then a 125. I rode a yz250 and an xr350r, fun times! Those 500s mske the hill look easy!
There is nothing better than the sound of a two stoke. Never rode a cr500 but had kx500s and yz500s. The yz came up in every gear. It did not mater speed or landscape. The only bike I was scared of. But loved as much.
Geez, enough of the fanboys. Can’t people learn how to like and respect both bike. Both are fun in different ways. 2 strokes there fast but guzzle down so much dam gas and blow up more. 4 strokes smother in every way possible more traction BUT more expensive to rebuild.
So lucky to have been a part of the SMP Country family in 96-99 at the 15/215 Temecula hwy split! CR500’s and Crusty Demons of Dirt was the shit! RIP, Bubba⚡️⚡️🤘🇺🇸
Those 4 strokes have well over 70hp, so im doubting you had an 80cc that was even close. Im curious how much those 500cc 2 strokes were though, id bet min 120hp.
. youd be surprised what a watercooled polished and ported cr 80 with a good pipe can do and its half the weight..Ive owned and built many bikes including a 160hp suzuki quad with a yamaha fzr 1000 motor on it ..trust me many of the 80s Ive built cant be touched by fourstrokes in a short run
as a kid i remember riding one of my friends cr 60 in the early 80s and had a hard time keeping the front end down on it, actually flipped it back on me once, but loved 2 strokes ever since. especially cr's
Wow a 60? I had an 80 Elsinore badass. 2 stroke all the way. The last one I had was a wr 250 stock, had a blast on it until a grade 3 dislocated shoulder, had to give it up .😔
@@jameskelly3745 yeah it was a cr60, and i was somewhere between 10 and 12 i think, i hate that i scratched my friends bike up but i had no idea a bike could be like that,.fell in love with cr's after that. and 2 strokes
The woman on #9 kept it alive up that hill. Great job. But I thought at the start line it sounded really blubbery. Could just be me after hearing a crisp 500.
Gotta love all the comments saying the 2 strokes smashed the 4 strokes. Pay attention to the bikes, all of the CR's were heavily worked and purpose build hill climb bikes, more than half of the 450's had bolt on swingarm extensions and were stock bikes that get used for motocross and hillclimb so obveously they're not going to be better at hillclimbs than a bike that is purpose built and tuned for it.
