It doesn't seem all that long ago (back in the early-to-mid 00's) a car in the low 12's was considered super-fast (for a streetable car anyway), and if you had a streetable car that made into the high-10's, your car was near legendary.

Following is NOT negative, just pointing out some changes from a long time ago. My first dragster chassis was short by the standards of 1975 (135wb), so I am thinking your opponent would probably have been an altered. Your car, in 1975, would be assumed to be from another planet. Honestly, I am in awe. The best time (my second car) ever recorded was a 9.24 and I think the MPH was less than your 150. The (did you say girl?) you raced, has a good-looking car, but I noticed the same things as you. I think it could go faster. I haven't even been on a dragstrip since 1988, but you have ignited my interest.

Our 2021 Plaid has been rock solid with over 500 dragstrip passes now, although we replaced the brake pads recently. That was slightly surprising since our 2019 Model S Performance (running mid-10s) still has plenty of bark pad left after 1001 dragstrip passes. We had no issues during those first 1001 Tesla passes, replacing only the key fob battery and wiper blades ($40 total).

Hi Andrew, I am watching your channel regularly. Although I am rooting for the underdogs - the ICE cars - I hope it is okay :) but I like the way you respect your opponents regardless their ride. So my question is: have you ever tried slicks on the Plaid? It seems the top contenders has big advantage on you at the first 60' although they have usually only two (rear) wheel drives, and you have four, that suggest they have better traction on two wheels than you have in total, and the main difference I guess is the tyre.
@TeslaPlaidChannel
@TeslaPlaidChannel Год назад
👍Thanks! We admire the cars we race against, as we'll always be gear heads. As for slicks, no one makes a true drag tire that fits the Plaid. Must be 28.0" OD and for a 19" or larger wheel (to fit over the brakes). A couple of Plaid owners have modified the brakes to fit an 18" wheel, because both Mickey Thompson and Hoosier make a 28" tire for an 18" wheel. But I've talked at length with my technician buddy at Tesla Service in Tampa, and he confirmed that the brake modification would affect the Warranty. That's not worth it to me, because I'm running only on prepped dragstrips (and never racing on the street). It would also affect my NHRA legality (see Description for more about those rules). Key Point: The Plaid will only put out a certain amount of power, and once we have enough traction to hold that full amount, additional traction only hurts the ET. We've found that on a *well-prepped* track (lots of glue!), we can hold 100% of the Plaid's available power with the 19" Pirelli P Zeros. We've run 1.43 60-foots and 9.15/916 in the 1/4 mile. But not all dragstrips have that level of prep. So we've found the next-best racing tire that fits the Plaid: the Nitto NT01 which is a competition-only tire and not for street use. We ran it frequently in the first year that we had the Plaid. It's shown in dozens of 1/8th mile races (all at Showtime Dragstrip) from Aug 2021-Sept 2022. But we don't like it for 1/4 mile races (which we've been doing more of lately), as their weight and rolling resistance affects our trap speeds. Here's one of our videos with the Nittos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fwemSXJ7JtI.html

@@TeslaPlaidChannel Thanks for your very detailed answer, now I get it and make it sense to run this rubber. It is not entirely comparable, but I run Toyo R888r-s on my GD 427 Cobra (N/A 580-600 hp, rwd) and it is road legal, I runned them at 200mph, hooks very good when it warm(!) even on unprepped track (it is not especially perfect for me because of rwd and having independent suspension I always afraid of hopping and breaking the rear end, a little bit softer tyre would be ideal for me but for 4 wheel drive rides I guess it is very good) so maybe you can check them too (but your fantastic 1.4 60' is very close to the top I guess your ride can do, even if you would use "cog-gear-wheel" on a "rack-track" :) cannot be much faster so maybe there is no point for experimenting with other tyres.)

Andrew, as always fun to watch. It makes me smile to see a "family sedan" run down a super sports car or a pure dragster. Have you considered the official Tesla Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit? I believe that once it is installed by a Tesla service center your software will be updated for max performance, 200+ mph. If this is so you will have to start looking for 8 second cars to race.
@TeslaPlaidChannel
@TeslaPlaidChannel Год назад
The Tesla brake kit only fits inside the heavy 21” wheels. For *drag racing* those would only slow us down, as we see those wheels struggle to run 9.30s. I’ve never witnessed a single Plaid with 21”s run in the 9.20s at my local dragstrips (other tracks have different conditions of course), whereas we could run three 9.20s in a row at full weight with our 19”s. Called the Demon170 because it will run on ethanol to make an advertised 1025HP and has run a NHRA certified 1.66 seconds 0-60 and a 8.91 second quarter mile! A true street legal race car. But supposedly not allowed on an NHRA track even though you can get it with a drag chute BUT NO roll cage. (Because there’s no way it can launch without warming up drag tires first)
@TeslaPlaidChannel
@TeslaPlaidChannel Год назад
But of course the Plaid has lots of horsepower to spare (estimates are up to 200HP). So Tesla could EASILY do a software OTA update to leapfrog over the new “1025HP” Demon; even as little as +10HP would take the HP lead again at 1030HP. (It would probably take +80HP to run 8.90s though)

You should understand that in the nine seconds league a Tesla plaid is a very capable machine (it is very consistent and runs the very low of the nines). You can check the faster cars (which are really race cars, contrary to the nine second cars usually modded street cars, or something restricted, for example naturally aspirated, low displacement cars.) In drag racing a mild drag racer "race-car" is in the sevens often, but the fastest street legal car is in the fives. These cars are in the finish line when the tesla is just about half or third way, so you get it: different leagues. If you compare the street legal, unmodified cars in only drag racing and only in quarter or eight mile, the tesla plaid is very close to the top you can buy.

I don’t have any hate for battery powered vehicles; however, there sure seem to be a lot of self righteous electric vehicle owners who act like owners of fuel powered vehicles are doing something wrong (look at some of your commenters).

Fun runs against the Z06 and dragster. It is interesting that the Z06 would have beaten the dragster as well. Even running hot. The dragster would have been a very close match for your Model S Raven. It shows how far Tesla has moved forward with the Plaid model in performance.
@newtonfirefly3584

@deanmcmanis; @deanmcmanis3938'; Your comment fits in line with Andrew's typical comments and are clearly biased along with some incorrect, false information. A. the Tesla Plaid Model S has been available for over 2 years, without any improvements, except the costly carbon-ceramic brake upgrades [~$20k -more than other independent manufactures which preceded and often preferred] B. actually the performance of, with Andrew's Plaid S is showing lower ET, TS, currently, and similar with results prior to removing weight C. clearly not only temperatures affects the electrical performance [not SOC as he and many may think -> lacking with basic electrical and battery knowledge], but as sometimes clearly, explicitly stated, traction. D. perhaps as the temperatures in Florida increase this month and next the results will be more apparent, clear - my 'hunch', 'guesstimate', assessment is that this Plaid S is having less traction, thus slower 60 ft, 330 ft, 660 ft-1/8 mile which is also noticed slower than at Orlando Speed World, and than Bradenton, BMP which are known to have better traction 1. -> thus, it could be the sidewalls of the Pirelli P Zero are less stiff, softer compared with when new, perhaps the tread has less grip too, thus affecting the traction 2. Andrew only attempted one set of tire changes with a set of Nitto tires, which he may still use without always indicating, though written in this video description post, the Pirelli P Zero are used. E. The S/W controlled by Tesla is not the optimal in design, implementation, for racing, thus traction for drag strip, and other track uses, though they have specific settings. Other vehicle manufactures with their production, performance vehicles have superior computer S/W control systems, monitoring, etc. as GM, Chevrolet had first implemented in their C5, improved through the decades, years, along with private ECU-PCM, manufactures as MoTec, HalTech, FuelTech [has updates for hybrid and full EV use], also seen in the Rimac especially their Nevera F. Tesla is basically promoting their some of their EV as 'performance' versions, but not properly, fully focused upon producing a properly designed 'performance' vehicle 1. there are clear, obvious mechanical issues, lacking as with the braking system, use, delivery with DOT 3 fluid, brake disks, pads good for general use, but less than capable and dangerous for any track, racing use - easily overheat -> brake fade and failure -> without any public admittance, offering, they have finally offered carbon-ceramic disks with appropriate pads, which are larger also, thus similar with other private manufacture production, though notably more expensive. 2. no performance, lightweight wheel options 3. the various 'performance' modes have not possible user input, modifications, adjustments, etc. [see C8 Z06 with launch mode for example], nor does the S/W controller seem to be well enough designed and implemented to adjust, modify according all track, traction, temperature, various conditions = limited design and implementation 4. =>Thus, more focused upon general passenger use with the possible track use also. 5. The obvious power/weight is very poor, ~4800lbs/1020HP, without any thought, intent, design, implementation about having a modular, removable battery system for track use or any portable charger, use of, with solar panels [which Tesla produce for homes, buildings, etc.] for charging, additional internal wind generators, extended range battery packs, for all type of uses. G. Then of course, when the obvious, known limitations are added, worse yet the rarely mentioned, avoided [intentionally] complete system, vehicle control by the manufacture including complete lockout, use, charging station blocks/lockout, constant wireless communication monitoring, control, access, availability, modification, which allows the vehicle to be completely controlled, takeover, lockout the driver, lock any and all passengers inside, stop or direct the vehicle remotely by the manufacture, any partners which include gov't and Globalists/Elite - by design, intents and purpose - >many to most, perhaps nearly all other modern manufactured vehicles have these same designs also, not just EV H. Thus this vehicle as with nearly all modern produced motor vehicles contain a computer control which is similar with all mobile computer devices, 'phones', 'tablets' with in-built, designed constant, continuous, monitoring, data acquisition, communication including all available information including location, travel, destination, speed, stops, time, dates, use, id, transactions, etc. = well designed, intended for full data capture, gathering, collection, thus storage, search by the various Gov't Agencies, Departments, Authoritarians, Globalist/Elite, in conjunction with the common portable computer, hand-held 'phone' devices they directed, dictated, controlled, invested, partner to be designed, developed, implemented, produced, promoted, proliferated, among the masses, especially, specifically with the "Inet", formally DARPANET [BBE developed for DARPA], cellular-mobile communications system and the interconnection. 1. ->those that consider these actual facts as some 'wild', 'crazy', 'nonsensical' idea, concept, portrayal, narrative are clearly in denial, refusal of the Facts, Reality with every proof including CCP-China full surveillance implementation, major existing surveillance within every country worldwide via cellular-mobile communication systems implemented prior to their inception, implementation, with their added aspect as they were designed, developed, produced while the public is led to use them for convenience, features, 'advantages' without any security, privacy and easier access with all 'wireless' communications, also legally, with legal partnerships within fixed connection systems [wire, cable, etc] [please see CIA/IQT VentCapCorp list of investment-partners - others exist too via other InvtVentCap and direct partners] 2. those are unaware, ignorant, ignore, deny, refuse the reality of the intended, purposeful portrayals, narratives of known, self-proclaimed "Socialist" George Orwell's "Animal Farm", "1984" and H.G. Well "War of the Worlds" along with Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" and others 3. Ever heard of Don Garlits? NHRA Champion, Big Daddy runs the Drag Racing Museum here in Florida. He switched to racing EVs a full DECADE ago. (He’s an absolute expert on Drag Racing 👍) Ever heard of Jay Leno? He owns hundreds of cars including several EVs, including Tesla, Porsche Taycan, and others. He’s an absolute expert on cars, and he extols the many advantages of EVs over ICE on his TV show “Jay Leno’s Garage” 👍 Ever read a car magazine like Motor Trend, Road and Track, or even Consumer Reports? Their testing is extensive, with thorough reviews of hundreds of cars per year. All of them acknowledge the advantages of EVs, and all of them can’t stop taking about the “engineering marvel” that is the new Corvette E-Ray 👍 As for us, our EVs (we’ve owned 6) are powered by solar panels on our roof, with 2 Powerwalls of backup. When the grid goes down, gasoline doesn’t pump. Ever watch the news after an epic storm? The few stations with any gas left usually have hundreds of cars lined up for blocks. We don’t have that problem. We are entirely self sufficient, and none of our cars have ever run out of battery power after hundreds of thousands of miles 👍. (Those batteries all have 8 year / 150,000 mile warranties BTW, but of course you probably “keep all your cars for 20 years or more”, right?) And so today here’s your comment. Maybe you believe you know more about cars than professional Automotive Journalists? Maybe you’ve owned more cars than Jay Leno? Maybe you are more of a drag racing expert than Don Garlits? 🤔 But then again,probably not. And since you’ve never even owned an EV, how can you possibly claim to give knowledgeable input about them? 😃
