Yes this station would be heard everywhere in East Kent where I grew up . Although I enjoyed Lazer 558 my favourite was RNI with Caroline and Veronica close behind . Happy memories of the lost days of the watery wireless as Kenny used to say
I listened to this as a fourteen year old kid on a small black radio I hid under my bed cover. I had no idea it broadcast for such a short period of time.
Nicky Horne who was the presenter of that video had s fantastic show on capital radio in London in the 70s / 80s , called your mother wouldn't like it . ⭐ 🎶 📻 🎧🎙️
By all accounts Laser had a badly designed studio, a cheap mic, an equally cheap mixer that didn't work probably and had to be replaced by a Gates mixer (probably borrowed from their neighbour Caroline), and aerial masts that kept falling down. Meanwhile behind the scenes there were rumours of horrendous boardroom fights. And yet, none of that mattered in the end because thanks to the sheer professionalism and skill of the DJs it was a great station and deserved all the popularity it had at the time.
Three Days and Three Months [1984-01 - 1987-04] . The sea transmitter Laser 558 broadcast from the transmitter ship MV Communicator, anchored in the vicinity of Radio Caroline's transmitter ship Ross Revenge off the English coast. Test broadcasts started on January 19, 1984. Broadcasts were stopped on April 20, 1987. Frequencies (wavelengths) used were 558 kHz (538 m) and 576 kHz (521 m) medium wave. A patrol boat lay between the Communicator and Ross Revenge to spy on and photograph any movement of supplies or supporters visits. This boat "Dioptric Surveyor" served as a spy ship on behalf of the DTI (Department Of Trade and Industry). This action, called Eurosiege 85, was intended to deter all employees, such as suppliers, sponsors, disc jockeys, and thus to silence the sea transmitters for good.
