Great video, thanks. Interesting to learn about the art versus the actual figure results. As a kid growing up back then, I'd tear through the wrapping paper and sadly the box/card packaging art too while opening a figure/vehicle. These days, the artistic packaging combined with the windowed figures/vehicles sealed, are fun works of art in my mind.

Going a little out of the box here but, the Micronauts from the 70's had some of the greatest art on their boxes from the late great Ken Kelly. Lots of that work could still be found online. I'm sure he could of worked with other toy lines too.

Well, it is not far out of the box. As this was mostly about my fav franchises of the 80s, I never had any connection to the Micronauts...but apparently, if my shows comments tell me anything, PEOPLE LOVED those guys. I did see their art, and that would have been a great one. Thank you

The Jem cartoon came on in the morning while we were getting ready for school. I thought the aesthetic was more Miami than west coast. The pastel colors of Miami Vice were everywhere.
@GENXPERIENCE

I suppose it could be, and the music scene was probably more Miami. Since so many of their shows revolved around Hollywood, I just assumed...but what do I know, lol. Maybe it was a blend of the Miami Vice aesthetic and the California setting in the animated series what made Jem unique to me, since I was a huge fan of said cartoons in the MTV-led mid-to-late 1980's. Not to mention, no Arcee figure for decades. And the lone female in any of these was crasher from GB and she didn’t look at all like crasher. There was no semblance of gender there either, which was beyond troublesome for me as a child. I always gravitate towards the female characters despite being male, and they are usually the ones I collect as figures. so when we finally had a female character that wasn’t human on Transformers, I was excited because my shelves only had an Optimus prime, a soundwave, and one Dino bot, grimlock. I would finally have a female to represent for transformers and the story now have new points of interest that might actually get me to Care more about the other robots. But it wouldn’t be for young boy me to own a female robot in disguise until I was well into my late adult years. Naturally, I bought it and put it on my desk at work but still I never got it as a child and I still don’t collect transformers. Definitely a correlation there.

A side note regarding the artwork from the G.I. Joe packaging. It was made by an artist named Dave Dorman, who was also responsible for a lot of Aliens, Predator, and especially Star Wars artwork throughout the 80s and 90s. I was lucky enough to spend some time with him a few years back, and on the subject of the G.I. Joe packaging, he said that a lot of his original artwork was thrown in the trash by Hasbro after they finalized and printed the packaging. He had to personally dig whatever paintings of his that he could find out of the dumpsters at Hasbro in order to save what he could, though he admitted that there are some pieces that were lost forever.

A long enough video of course but I'm surprised that you didn't touch on how Star Wars basically admitted defeat in the end when their final line of vehicles and accessories started using box art as opposed to movie scenes or toy photos.....its a pretty common comment for people to say that they thought those last toys were actually models rather than part of the toy line because it was such a departure.

I know this is a 70's toy and not 80's, but Big Jim's Wolf P.A.C.K. figures have got to be on this list. The King of comic's Jack Kirby himself drew the art for the boxes. The full page add that ran in marvel comics at the time mesmerized me as a child. I never had these until later in life and the difference in the figures compared to the box art was disappointing to say the least. They looked pretty good (for the time) but had little articulation, a weird rubber coating on the arms wich gave them a 2 toned skin color, and saddly the hands couldn't grip the weapons. Fortunately I found some reproduction boxes to put them in and my P.A.C.K. has never looked better. 😊😊😊

I never really liked the Transformers box art as a kid (and was really weirded out by those books that used it), but it's grown on me as an adult. Honestly, one of my favourites was Super Powers. Bright, splashy cards with great, archetypal illustrations right out of the DC Comics style book. Oh, and the He-Man MAGAZINE art gets an honourable mention for bringing the Masters card art even more to life. My favourite current toy art are the ReAction Universal Monsters figures... I don't collect them, because I cannot countenance spending $20CAN on deliberately bad toys meant to stay on the card as an art piece, but those paintings on the cards are glorious.

My cousins had He-man, but while I liked the cartoon, I didn't have the toys because I didn't like the way they looked. But the biggest disappointment is Jem and the Holograms. As an adult toy collector to this day, I love the original artwork of Jem and the other characters, but the actual dolls left much to be desired. Most are down right ugly. Transformers box art was and is my favorite. They all look so cool and interesting leaping off the box. I used to spend a long time at KB toys drooling over all the cool transformers i knew i would never have. I never cared that i couldn't actually make my transformers bend or pose like the art. As long as they could pass as an actual car or plane, i was very happy. The only thing that really bugged me was the size. I wanted Optimus to hold the Megatron gun. Why was blaster as big as devastator? Why didn't rumble come with piston arm accessories? Why didn't they ever sell energon cubes? Who was responsible for the terrible engineering of tracks? Those legs had to be taped down.

I didn't hate it as a kid at all. I did confused sometimes, lol between all the differences, but like I said...Real Car, Awesome Transformation, like you I was happy. Yeah, those little things were like shortchanging us. Megatron gun was the best, you have to admit.

@@GENXPERIENCE yes Megatron gun was insanely cool. The scope and brace just took it to the next level. But for me, Jetfire and thrust were close. I was obsessed with vertical takeoff when I was a kid and the jets themselves were already the best looking vehicles. My brother got skywarp for his birthday and I was soooo jealous. Thrust was #1 on my Christmas list every year but I never got him. Never understood how my parents chose the transformers to get me. But I still loved them all. My most vivid memories from back then were getting hook, metroplex, and Optimus, and slag. My pulse shot through the roof when I saw that awesome grid pattern under the wrapping paper!

@@grog3514 Huh, You actually raise a good point. How DO parents pick wich toys to buy for their kids? My guess is they have a vague idea wich ones you like but if it's not in stock they just pick whatver is available. Except when you wanted to troop build, then they knew exactly wich figures you already had.

Your Sectaurs artwork at the end of the video is from the Zica Toys reboot line in 2018, not the original 1985 Coleco figures.
@GENXPERIENCE
@GENXPERIENCE 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I saw both, and thought I was using the right ones. At least the originals still used the individual art representation of their character action figures.

No im not a kid from the 80s but instead from the 2010s but i did get disappointed when i first took a look a the jem dolls from the 80s, specially the smiling Jem, Flash n Sizzle Jem is kinda scary to me, no matter the pic, she just IS scary looking, i'm kind of surprised you didnt talk in like more depth about the smiling jem face

I think teh whole JEM line is worth an entire shows. This topic fascinates me as I was drawn to box art. So a brief introduction into how their different was all I needed.

I enjoyed watching this video. Growing up my sister and I loved watching Jem. Even now I have the Dvds of all 3 seasons. I wanted to love the dolls, but they were sooo unattractive. In addition to their large heads, they also wore old lady shoes. Not cute!

Haaaaaa, Old Lady Shoes. I had no idea. That is awesome. Yeah, those dolls were uh, ATHLETIC BUILT, lol. Please watch my older videos of Jem adn Misfit fashions. YOu'll love it.

1 might have been exagerhating, but seriously, I hoped some of those G1 figures had more articulation. My hoist could move his arms. THAT WAS IT. But...still loved them so much.

Oh, it was truly tops. I do love the style of art on the JEM boxes, but since I collected GI Joes it impressed me how real I felt they were because of the art. Thanks for the comment.

No. He-Man and She Ra are twins separated at birth when Hordak kidnapper her as a baby and took her to Etheria. So says the original cartoon, at least.

Did you just describe the 80’s vibrant color pallet as “garish”!? You wouldn’t know good art if it crawled up your butt 😂😂😂😂

Nice try. I don't recall saying anything wrong about garish. If you had listened you would have heard me say "the real star of the art is..." And if you don't agree that the Jem Art is PHENOMENAL, then I can't help.

Visionaries was a tremendously beautiful, action figure line. I remember trying to open that package without tearing any of the art, except for the inevitable gluon portion because I thought it was so striking to look at. Well done on that mention.
