------------
Ueli Steck has been climbing for over 20 years and in that time he has become one of the most renowned and respected athletes of his generation. In an age of fast and light alpinism, Ueli Steck has driven the sport to new heights with revolutionary ascents all over the world.
In 2015, after several years of pushing the limits of his sport in the high ranges of the Himalayas, Ueli decided to return to the Alps to attempt a very different take on a classic alpine challenge; climb all 82 summits of 4,000 metres or above in the European Alps in less than 80 days, and to top it all off, to complete the challenge using only human power from start to finish.
The project starts in eastern part of Switzerland with Ueli's climbing partner Michi Wohlleben and the project supporter Daniel Mader. Join Ueli and the team as they battle their way through the highs and lows of a very classic alpine challenge in the Alps. EpicTV and Goal Zero present "The Classic Alpinist”, a special 4-part series. Stay tuned for part 2 coming out next Tuesday the 22nd of December.

RIP Ueli :( . Particularly eerie to hear him say this at 5:58 given his recent slip and fall off of Everest -- "It's hard to explain how much risk I take, because I'm the only person who's in the moment, and who makes the decision. It's just one second, you make a wrong decision. This can happen to the best"

I will always wonder if the stress of this goal, affected his performance on Lotshe Traverse and caused him to die.PLUS: He lost his friend Martin on that last 82 summit run....PLUS: there was a heated altercation in everest camp which could have messed up his focus for that climb on Lotshe. PLUS: he had recently been interviewed and told his interviwer "i feel empty" And repeated it two more times in the interview. 😞

what would you advise a man who wants to start mountaineering?
@naughtydog201
@naughtydog201 6 лет назад
TheChuky18 One of the best things for you to start with is get into rock climbing and do as many hikes as possible. They don't need to be technically difficult but they must be long and test your endurance. Before long you meet loads of people who share your same interests and these people are the ones you'll end up climbing with. Don't fuss about owning the best equipment from day 1 as the only way you can really learn is by trial and error. However, investing in some high end hiking boots and some great outdoors clothing is a decent start. And from there you learn your strengths and weaknesses. Where to improve and how to go about doing it. Don't be reckless but don't try play it too safe either.

@kevinmathewson4272
@kevinmathewson4272 6 лет назад
Janica Moore that's an interesting question for any challenge - what counts as cheating. I think it depends on what the point of the challenge is. Ueli did a lot of speed ascents, and for those the stopwatch usually stops at the summit. I think this challenge was an extension of that. He wanted to string together 82 speed ascents, and commute between them using only human power.

I told you , i find it sad , some other may not. "the greatest alpinist is the one who get back home" is a Bruno Detassi's quote. If you don't know who is he , well , maybe you don't love mountains that much.but , anyway , i don't care. your baby - child approach is evident looking how you consider (BS) other people's opinion. hold your idols and your myths in your pocket and...so long.
@GoJMe
@GoJMe 7 лет назад
Detassi is not even comparable to Ueli, sad that incompetent people flaming youtube, it happens daily anyway. Their achievements had different goals. The greatest alpinist is not the one that gets back home, its like voting for Trump for world peace. Only idiots could make that comparision. Some people have far more better skill than Ueli and die earlier, because of a mistake. The more practice the less probability to mistakes, also natural talent needs to be taken into account. But as an alpinist or climber you also have to take into account the weather. Indeed maybe a waste to waste such a talent to climb by climbing in high altitudes and take the risks. For example Messner, every photo of him i seen or video after he finally gotten down from a 8000+ meter peak he look as he has died at least 3 times before getting home. Still he survived. I hate stupid people, i grew up to respect all regardless origin and beliefs, but there is one kind of people i can not take, and thats fuggin stupid people, the disgrace of the human race.
