Dementia and Alzheimer’s patients are very consumed with wanting “to go home” even when they are at home. My mother lived with me and we had to fence in the porches and dead bolt the doors with key locks, along with an alarm system. She even managed at 86 years old to climb over the locked gates on the front porch so she could “ go home”. This program through fire departments sounds like a save but I know Mom wouldnt keep a bracelet on. She even peeled a cast of her foot several times! She passed away in June. I feel so bad for this lady and her family.

My grandma knew me, my name and her promise to me when she passed. She had dementia and kept saying I want to go home. I told her she was at home and she said " You know what I mean. I'm old I've lived my life and I just want to go home." A couple of months later she went home. Home was Heaven.

I had a client who always tried to get out of bed to go fishing at 5am. Before I worked there, the other CNA’s never got him out of bed. They would spend half the shift trying to keep him in bed. I started getting him out the house for an hour on my shift. I also bought pool noodles from dollar tree to make fake fishing poles 😂. That stopped him from trying to get out the bed. You have to occupy their mind! They have ALL DAY to think and they are STRONG. My client was 6’4 290 pounds but I got him out that bed. He got me though 😂. He started trying to bring me our catch for the day when I would get off. SOO…. I brought a bucket with me to bring my fish home 😂😂.

Bless you for your work and heart. I'm retired from too many years, EMT, unit coordinator and more and my brief nursing home gigs took more strength than the worst trauma centers. Bet there are thousands of similar examples. Reminds me of one big giant guy patient that was mostly calm but only lucid if manic and had terrifying strength and temper. I hope for all caregivers that Jack Reacher stays healthy.

I just made a comment elsewhere that when you were doing everything you can to try and keep a loved one in the home, it can be a very difficult decision to move them into assisted-living, but it is very important to recognize when it is no longer safe for them to be at home. Sometimes the very best thing you can do for them is simply find the best facility for them and make sure they are being treated well there.

We had our 87 year mother get an Apple Watch and for $10 a month it has a feature that will notify all of us if she falls. She has one minute to say she’s ok and after that it automatically dials 911 and sends her children a text so we know.

In the UK we have Lifeline, it’s either goes on the wrist or around the neck like a pendant. IF the vulnerable person falls or wanders out of a certain range an alarm goes to the central operators. If they get no response from the person they call emergency services straight away. It’s not free, but it is invaluable.

@@AnitaDilDo you have the same TV commercial we have in the states? Help I've fallen and can't get up. I always laughed at that commercial until one day I fell down a whole flight of stairs when my slipper got stuck in my robe. I was holding my toy poodle & saw the slipper robe contact going on & knew I couldn't stop it. Damn did that hurt! My whole right side was hurt & bruised. I cracked several ribs. My head banged on the bench at the bottom of the stairs & got a concussion. I couldn't move, breathe or talk. The dog was okay though 😆👌 Finally I was whispering my son's name & I knew he couldn't hear me from his room. Around a half hour later I was able to crawl to the couch. I was crying & laughing because all I could think about was the Lifealert commercial Help I've fallen and can't get up😵‍💫😆 I've since moved to a one story house. LoL I'm not doing that again! LoL

I am 81, in reasonable health, but it is over. I was extremely active all of my life. I was a flight instructor, an areobatic pilot, I was also a New Thought minister and had a wedding's business. I worked right up until I was 79. My mind is as sharp as ever. What most people don't understand is there is nothing left to do. Life is over except for the memories. The only reason I want to go on is for my wife who is in the early brushes of dementia. I want to be with her to guide her in good decision making. I believe when you make vows you stick with them. When your elderly relatives want to go home don't fight them, they have that right and no doctor should deprive them of it.

My dads family doctor told us he’d been seeing more people with dementia nowadays. So many medicines, surgery ,etc to keep our bodies going but then the bodies outlast the brain and there’s been a massive uptick in Alzheimer’s and dementia. My dad had severe dementia for the last 12 months or so of his life. It was a blessing when he passed. 😞 My mom would lock doors,hide his shoes, but he would still wonder outside, we were always sure that’s how he’d go, just wonder off into the woods and not be seen alive again.

Did you know that Senior Citizens who eat Dodger Dogs at Dodger Stadium are much healthier than Senior Citizens who don't eat Dodger Dogs? That is a perfectly true statement based on research, but there is a confounding variable in it. The Seniors who were healthy enough to go to a Dodger Game were already healthy, and it had nothing to do with Dodger Dogs, even though they did eat them. Yes, dementia is on the rise, but they have no idea why. It could just as easily be air pollution and microplastics as medicines and surgery. It could be that the people getting it now were exposed to leaded gasoline too. And actually life expectancy has gone down. So we don't know why it's increasing. Guessing is not really helpful either. There is a genetic component though. You might want to keep that in mind. No pun intended.
@bdawg8907
@bdawg8907 8 месяцев назад
@@boycott2720 I’m well aware of the genetic predisposition and I’m terrified to think that I’ll end up in the same state as my father. It’s easy to think now that…hey, when I start showing signs of dementia just take me out behind the barn and put me out of my misery… then when you finally age you don’t even realize it’s happening and if you do it’s too late.

@@bdawg8907 The difference between you and your father is treatment. There is a new treatment that uses ultrasound to open the blood brain barrier so the medications can remove the plaques. And they’re in a small subdivision still surrounded by farmers fields. There’s not going to be a lot of neighbours driving by the place before 7 AM to begin with, and even if you do have a couple of neighbours up and driving to work in the early morning in the complete darkness, they are focusing on the road, not paying attention to a snow covered shape in a driveway

I've worked in health care a long time (usually acute care like ERs) but also briefly in a nursing home that sucked the soul out of me. In one new ER, we would have a poor woman, decked out to the gills, come into the lobby and pace in despair, waiting to hear a report on her husband who had passed years ago. I'm 64 now, retired and freelance writer enough to move to a remote 1883 Montana homestead farm. Completely unexpected, by myself but hell yeah, I went for it. Rental/caretaking. Great neighbors but 3 miles away and only ones in valley. Whole compound becomes a tiny little dot lost in the vast landscape if hiking up to the canyons on either side. All well and good but I think about something hitting me quick or, just as bad, over time. I could walk to the barn, fall in a snowbank and MAYBE be found in Spring. Or just wander a bit too far in high summer. OR unlimited potentials if I began to lose it over time; Lord knows what trouble I could cause before anyone noticed.

@@annahgibbus8 Har! Understood! Only one cattle ranch in area 2.5 miles down; cannot see their single light unless walking a quarter mile to access road. Owner's name is Buckshot (of course) and AMAZING guy; super ally. He or the wranglers can spot me as they work but he did that same think to check on me as he hadn't seen me at the mailbox for a couple days. Of course I could have been in a snowbank for 24 hours but the thought is what counts! I have my friends but always lived alone anyway. MOST of the interview were warnings. Previous attempts at rentals were disasters. But a super win/win with my circumstances and landlord is fairly sure I'll survive. Buckshot's crew brush off any renters unless they survive a winter which I did. Sorry for babbling; coffee and ex transcriptionist. To your point and despite LL saying "only junk is left", there is archive museum-level ... EVERYTHING ... still left. Equipment abandoned in place, full range from horsedrawn plows to Mad Max trucks rebuilt as mobile bay hoists. Trip over some metal in field and is entire fence wagon with 1800 tools. Huge pits where they threw enough metal, etc and vehicles to rebuild Detroit. Old windmills, rotors ... I dragged a 1920s Aermotor rotor out and winched it onto the front of the barn (looks GREAT). Repainting old toys/discs/tractor seats. Heavy metal hoarder paradise but all in historic focus. Happily most is just too HEAVY. At any rate, I'm an author as well and this WILL be a book. Carry on. Some people in this comment section think dementia onset is slow, but I can assure you that sometimes it is not. I took care of a person whom had been driving less than a week before a severe onset happened . She went from driving taking care of her house and bills to not being able to comprehend anything in a week. Sometimes something as simple as a urinary tract infection can cause the symptoms and when that is treated, the person goes back to their normal self. Never judge people when you don’t know the circumstances. Sometimes the meds the people are on cause this also.

Did she not have family? They had to know that she was showing signs of dementia if they talked to her frequently. That is so tragic and awful.

Could also be a medication she was on. Sometimes elders are more prone to hallucinations or vivid dreams on certain meds. Also UTI's can cause delirium. She never should have been living alone at her age. Even an elder apt building is better since others would be aware of anything odd going on.

Anyone heard of Ambien? It is used as a sleep aid, but I remember hearing a story of a physician who was using it, who ended up dying out in the snow - basically sleepwalked at night.

Ikr. I hate all the "ring" cameras. It's so intrusive to film everywhere, all the time. People fall for it for the sake of "safety" or theft. It's creepy.

2 of greatest fears getting old! Dementia & Alzheimer’s!(they are basically the same thing… Alzheimer’s is the worser state!?) You have to keep an eye on them or/& place a locator device on them! Especially if they are mobile & active still! Prayers to the family & friends!🙏🏽

So sad! In just a nightie and barefoot….she was so far from home roo. You couldn’t have saved her, I’m sorry. She just wandered off in a daze and, living on her own, she had no one to tell her “No”. So sad when there’s no one left to watch over you.🙁
