I use mainly an 85mm for portraits, but lately I'm shooting with my Sony 100-400mm. I know it sounds funny shooting at 400mm, but I got some of my favorite shots with that lens at max distance. I was able to bring big mountains so close because of the compression which made some really unique photos. Yes, it was hard to communicate with the model, but I explained to her what I needed before we start shooting and the photos came out absolutely stunning!

I ran some tests last year as I was debating whether to get the Sigma 135 mm ART. The tests were for portraits only, half-length to head shot for beauty. I found that the 135 mm had too much compression in the close-up beauty head shots; the subjects jaw was exaggerated . I already have an 85 mm and a 100 mm. The 85 mm is the most flexible from beauty head shots to full body fashion, but I do think the 100 mm focal length is the most flattering for beauty head shots. Perhaps explains why historically the 105 mm was considered the classic portrait lens.

I have 85, 90, 100, 105, and 135mm lenses that I use for portraits. I usually use them on full-frame cameras for half-length, head & shoulder, and face shots. I use the 100mm f/2.8 as an expendable backup lens. The 90mm f/2 is an M-mount lens that I use on my Leica rangefinders. For weddings, I usually carry 85mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/2.8. The 105 is a macro lens that I use for tight face shots and ring close-ups. The 85 is my personal favorite half-length and head & shoulder portrait lens. The 135mm is an f/2 Zeiss lens that I use for low-light portraits.

I am just really interested in the difference of range from the subject from 85mm - 100mm - 135mm. This could be the deciding factor on which one to go with. They all look great but circumstances may force you into the 85mm or even possibly a 50mm. Sometimes you just don't have the space.

I’m an introverted photographer and love the space the 135mm gives me between my subject and I. I love being able to give people space and privacy so they can whisper sweet nothings in each other’s ear without me breathing on top of them. Helps me capture real emotion. Thanks for these comparison videos, they’re really good!
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 года назад
Yesss I agree! When taking portrait with models I feel like I don't need that distance since they are used to being in front of a camera most of the time, but for wedding couples who might be nervous the extra space definitely helps them feel more comfortable :)

Dear Julia. I follow your great videos with a lot of joy and great interest! Of course, I also follow many other photographer videos here, but your films are the best! Your models are beautiful and you take gorgeous pictures of them. If you present and compare different lenses, I can get an accurate picture of which of the lenses is suitable for me. I bought a 135mm during lockdown and all honestly I fell in love with it after my first portrait shoot. I wish I could show you :). I didn't mind the distance from the model as I was shooting in a quiet location. I also adapted to the focal length by shooting differently from my 85mm (location wise and mentality wise) as I believe both lens needs a different approach when shooting, and my mindset paid off. I just focused on the end result.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 года назад
Yeah I agree that they both need a different mindset/approach while shooting! And the 135 is perfect for quiet locations where you have a lot of space, I’ll be getting one very soon, can’t wait to use it again!

Interesting comparison, for me was using an 85mm mostly and then got to try a 135mm f1.8 and wow! I prefer the results with the 135mm, the subject separation is a level up from the 85mm. But understand your point about shooting flowing movement, it's a tighter frame for sure.

as you correctly reported, 100 mm 2.8 STF has a T stop of 5.6, which means this lens is not really comparable to the others in question of depth of field. Not really a fan of STF and how it works, but other people love it.

I am owning all three lenses, and all are great. The 100mm GM *STF* is one of my favourite lenses in "bright light". The bokeh is out of this world and is sometimes rendering the background into something like a painting - absolutely gorgeous. It's also a great lense for taking pictures in sunny cities in Europe, e.g. Italy, Greece, and Croatia. It's not the first choice for available light, of course. The 135 GM is (too ;-) ) goddam sharp and features a blazingly fast autofocus. On the A7RiV you can convert it into a 200mm 1.8 (regarding transmission, not DOF) in APS-C mode keeping 26 megapixels of resolution, which is sooo cool. No need for a 70-200mm 2.8! The 85mm GM is great for indoor portraits. and still has a wonderful bokeh at 1.4. The AF is a bit slow and may not hit the target directly in low light. Unfortunately the 85mm GM. does not open fully when focussing. However I do not want to miss this lense, which was the first one that I bought, when entering the SONY FE universe.

hello Julia, The 100 does nothing for me, if I wanted f2.8 I could always stop down the 85 or 135 to f2.8, or use a 70/200 f2.8, I have always liked the 85 focal range because it gives you the perfect working distance unless you are in tight spaces, the 135 focal range makes it hard to communicate with the model because of the working distance, but I love the compression the lens gives, and in some shots the 135 can look amazing, when you get the right shot with the right background with the right lighting it has a fairy tail quality about it. but with any of these lenses, it has allot to do with who is using it, and there ability to take advantage of the lenses strong points. if you owned an 85 and 135, there would be a time and a place for both of them.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 года назад
I have to agree, the 100mm focal length is really nice it’s kind of a sweet spot between these other 2 but if you’re not after quite so much reach. I do wish they just made it an f1.8 like the 135! And yeah I love that fairytale/magical look the 135 gives images 😍

Hi Julia, Thanks very much for this video, it’s very helpfully. I have a question, I have the 135 and the 85, sometimes I have to shoot in lowlight indoor, the 85 better option than 135 but the 85 is so noisy in focus, the 135 is almost silent, do you have the same issue? Or only my lense

I actually haven’t tried the Canon 135 adapted to Sony yet, so I’m definitely keen to try it out and see how it performs! Do you find the AF works well on it? Edit: Wait I just remembered I’ve used it adapted a couple of times during some wedding receptions but that was in pretty low light and the AF was okay. Back in the day, 85mm was for general waist up portrait, 105mm was for male head shots, 120mm was for female head shots and 130-135mm was for baby shots. There seems to be a lot of guff about prime lenses of shorter focal length being “portrait” lenses because of the Bokeh but not really dealing with the various distortions that these lenses create. Some older photography books would help many today in gaining the knowledge to create stunning portraits other than portraits with bokeh.

Not too keen on the 100 lens flare myself, Julia - you'd love the 55 Zeiss in that case! I own the 135 GM as well as the 55 and also 85 1.8. Prefer the bokeh on the 135. Nice content thanks.

Haha I love my lens flares! The 100 flare is quite defined, I liked it for these couple of shots I took, not sure if I would be a big fan of having them in there for the entire shoot though 😅

Hi Julia! do you feel like it is still worth to pursue a photography career starting in 2020? Asking because although I am self-taught, I feel like there is way too much competition.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 года назад
Absolutely! Everyone has their own style and what they can offer so I believe there is room for photographers to still start their own business. You also need to keep in mind to not see the photogs on Instagram/RU-vid etc as your competition but take a look at who is in your local area or the location that you want to work in instead.

My favourite portrait lens is 105/1.4. + it is needed to be added to the video, that 135/1.8 AF is far faster than 85/1.4 and 135 is also visibly sharper than 85/1.4. (I do not like busy bokeh of 100 - especially on the night shots + tree branches / grass close to the subject.)

@@juliatrotti It is longest f1.4 AF lens which is already good reason to own it for low light photography. And as a bonus I've got superb IQ and almost none CA. It has better working distance than 135 and only a bit worse bokeh.

135 1.8 or 70-200 on 200 f2.8?
@drbeardo6960
@drbeardo6960 3 года назад
Simple Crude formula = Focal length / aperture value of 45-50 to see Optimum level of subject separation Say for 85mm f1.8 85/1.8 = ~47 for similar level of feeling you can get 50mm f1.1 (50/1.1= 45) 65 or more score gives even better subject separation say Canon EF 135mm f2 135/2 = 67.5 for 200mm f2.8 200/2.8= 71 for 300mm f4 300/4 = 75 for Canon RF 800mm f11 800/11 = 72 Score above 110-120 can almost desolve background depending upon how far is the background from the subject I mean you cam see colours only for full body portraits 400mm f2.8 400/2.8= 142

I'm currently not in a hurry to buy a telephoto prime lens because I recently got my hands on the Tamron 70-180, but it is a 2.8, which obviously means it can't blur out the background as well as those primes you were using. I love the look of the 135, but I don't know if I want to be constricted to such a tight look... Sometimes I'm asked to shoot (a wedding video prep) where a place is just cluttered with... Stuff... Do you think the 85 1.8 is the preferred lens to blow out everything else? Or the 135?
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 года назад
Ahh I love that Tamron 70-180 such a good lens!! Hmm the tricky thing with wedding prep is that you’re usually indoors so you never know if you’re going to have enough space to be able to move around especially on something like a 135, I usually only use the 135 for ceremonies and the reception! For me personally I would probably stick to an 85 specifically for prep to be on the safe side. I’ve definitely photographed some prep places that were absolutely tiny and had to be on a 35 + barely a 50 haha

When shooting with the 85 mm you could've got a bit backwards and could've used the tree as a nice element in the frame ( the model and the left side and the arc of the tree on the right side of the frame in landscape orientation). Just saying

I love all three lenses. I have an 85mm and I’m researching between a 24-70 and a 70-100. Even with your comparisons, the 85mm always comes off more realistic. The 100mm looks like I would use for sports and the 135mm for more artistic fashion shoots. I think I just want them both with my 85mm 😂😂 Thanks for this video!

I have all 3, well the sigma art version of the 85mm as it has far better reviews than the sony gm version, i love that lens without question, i bought it as an alternative to go with my 135gm which is my absolute favorite of all my lenses, and i have a lot, however i picked up the 100mm stf last week and I'm blown away by the results it gives when used the way it was designed for, (close up) the get that ultimate smooth background which while i love the ultimate 135gm it cant complete with the Boker of the 100mm stf.
