It’s 5 a.m. here but I’m so excited to watch this with my 96 year young Momma today. Thank you for all the time you take making your wonderful videos! ❤
they are absolutely beautiful and behaved very well, one of them did however hike it's leg & urinate on the bottom area of the kitchen where there were some white dishes or something white on bottom shelf area just so you know Martijn.
Totally cracked me up you looking for the other chicken as she came up behind you and was looking where you were looking. They all have such fun personalities.
This project, Martijn, story telling, brings so much joy to me. Please don't give up on what we call "dutch oven" cooking. This cast iron pot was an indispensable item on the early American frontier. Here, there were simply too many coals on the lid. The dutch oven adds so much to the ambiance of an outdoor event around the fire. Loved seeing Geppo's artful work and his beautiful dogs. Shout out to all the helpers. Thank you, Martijn for all.
There is also a recess for a thermometer between the lid and the pan to monitor the temperature. With more and less coals, you can manage the temperature of the Dutch oven.
You’ll be so happy once your fireplace/oven is up and running Martijn. No more burnt pies or bread. You’ve done very well to manage your cooking on the open fire for two years. The homestead is growing so nicely. Hopefully, the much improved battery box will ease your burden in the winter. It’s all coming together for you and all your planning and hard work in paying off. Well done. Warmest wishes from Australia 👏🏻🇦🇺🦘
But I don't understand why he doesn't lift the lid during baking, not wait until the very end when the pie is burnt. Lift the lid, check the pie, put the lid back for another 5 - 10 minutes. So soul-destroying after all the effort and ingredients have gone into the pie only to discover later it's pretty much ruined.
I look forward to the day we see an image of you enjoying an espresso looking out your beautiful new window while the apple pie bakes in your new oven.
@@SuperLittleTyke Freshly laid eggs do not have the typical taste. The tasty aroma only develops in the first three days after laying. As boiled eggs, they are difficult to peel and the protein is very gritty and they are difficult to mix for baking because the white is still a solid lump around the yolk. Eggs are like wine, they get better as they age. Expect three to six days. For beaten egg white they should be at least a week old.
@@ws4860 I fried a freshly laid farm egg yesterday in butter and it was perfect. And if the white is still clumped around the yolk you can chop it with a knife and watch the white spread over the pan. Been doing it for years.
I love it how "the girls" follow you, protest when you peek in for eggs and you apologized for disturbing her., too curse Martijn. Fortunate to have such a mushroom abodanza, I loved going to the fields after a rain with my great aunt and her big basket which was shortly filled with 5/6 types of mushrooms. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like the chickens are getting attached, they are falling Martijn around, they make great pets and for those who don't know, chickens purr like cats when they are happy.
Apple pie! It was watching the episode when your parents were visiting and your mother made that epic apple pie that hooked me on your videos. I was so impressed that your mother could make a pie in such rustic conditions without all the bells and whistles of pastry making! When the pie was pulled out of the coals and the Dutch oven was opened, I literally exclaimed with amazement at such a delicious pie. Then, the next morning, the three of you sat stoically at the stone table, eating that mouth watering pie with your coffee… I expected to hear, “mom, this pie is great!” But it was so quiet until your mother said something like, “it cuts very well” - of course apple pie makers all dread a runny pie, so I know what she meant by that. Then she said something about the nuts… I would have been jumping up and down with joy at such a success! After seeing this remarkable episode, I went back to number 1 and watched all the others. Your mom’s pie made a Martijn fan of me. Every project undertaken with such care… So today, as soon as you started making the pastry I knew what you were up to. Apple pie just like Mom’s… But as soon as it went on those glowing hot coals I said out loud, “too hot!” But kudos to you for trying and eating it anyway. I’m sure when your oven is installed your pies will be as epic as your mother’s! Thanks for another great episode. Can’t wait for next week.
I loved hearing your laughter when you realized the black chicken was helping you search for herself under the bushes! "I'm here Martjin! What are you looking for?" You've inspired me to make an apple bake this week.
Interesting project, but one thing is for sure. Those hens are living the best life. There is an old stone school house in Rimella that I would like to rebuild. It is the school house of my ancestors. Your channel has given a lot of inspiration and knowledge. Thank you. ✌️
That's just upstream of the Landwasser waterfall on the Torrente Rimella/Torrente Landwasser - a truly beautiful part of the Alps, and an area that I try to visit every year. I've kayaked over that waterfall a few times - a lot of fun. Good luck with the future refurb!
The joys of living alone episode, working at your own pace, having time for hobbies and pets and simply enjoying the company of nature, it's like time doesn't exist there, it gave me some sense of calm and temporary relief from the city life. Thanks for sharing.
So gorgeous I had to look them up The Berger Blanc Suisse is an absolutely beautiful white dog (they are sometimes referred to as the Snowy Shepherd or the White Swiss Shepherd) that is also very close in appearance to breeds such as the White Shepherd and White German Shepherd
It's Sunday evening here in my country with my hubby and sons listening to music and having beer and I, enjoying your vid. Thanks for the joy of seeing what you share in your vids.
Its another beautiful chapter in this story… thanks for distracting me with your magical world Martijn 🙏🌱🐓 Midnight in spring here as I sneak a late Sunday night session, watching you prepare for winter as the tree colours change and we prepare for an El Niño bushfire season in Tasmania… I love the contrast 😎
Herzliche Grüße an alle Zuschauer aus der ganzen Welt .We are one human Family!
The cow bells approach as the sound of a rocky brook as one draws nearer, flowing, exploding with energy as it passes. Lovely punctuation for a fine autumn day.
Right, never put batteries on the ground. Also, if the temperature drops below freezing, the electrolyte in the battery will freeze and expand, which can cause the battery to crack or rupture. If the battery isn't fully charged, there's a risk of freezing at milder temperatures.
When we watch the videos, please try to watch several ads without skipping. Watch until the very end. This helps him financially and we get to see more projects.
Hi Martinj...you have learned to do many things at the same time....i love to see how you made the nice polenta and the beautifull pie, as your mother did when visit you. Congratulations!! Good job on the battery box!! Love to see how you treat your Chickens, they looks happy and free.🐓 ❤👍👏
God, I love watching the chickens free, enjoying the meadow, and following you. Looks like the egg production is up. The night scene with you walking between the cabins was spectacular. Hope your mom watched this one - and found it cute about the apple pie. Love the chickens dust bath - wonder why they select that spot. oh, soooo very sad about your pie!
God love those lovely chickens - doing what chickens do. They can’t help but make a man [who grew up with them…] smile. Thanks, Martin, for making the effort to capture their way of getting on with [a good and proper] life, on video for us. - j.a.c.

You might have to add something for the Winter for your Chickens too. They wont mind the cold as long as they stay dry and are protected from the Wind. But they will need high Energy feed (Raisins, Nuts, Oil and Vitamins ) and of corse the Water must not freeze. Also, and this might be a Problem, you might need to install some artificial Light, as they will need at least 12 hours of Light to eat enough. Their Crops only have that much Capacity. The white Chicken has a large Comb and Wattle that might in danger of Frostbite but I dont know what you could do about that.
So glad to see things advancing for you with the help from friends and helpmates. That's terrific. Wonderful to see windows and doors arriving. That will make a huge difference especially with the cold winter arriving soon. The improvements for the battery box is fantastic. Thanks Martijn. Your programs are always great. Glad to see the dogs come for a visit as well. Hope you get one for you soon!
Like for so many of your viewers, for me, the battery box and electrical system is fascinating. I can't wait to hear more about how the new system and the heated battery box works! Most especially, I cannot wait to see the masonry stove being built, and how that all will work to heat the cabin. As always, the chickens are just adorable, how they follow you around and choose to take their dust baths right at the heart of the homestead in the outdoor kitchen! Thanks so much for your channel. It's a long week between episodes!
Good choice on the windows, Martijn...I know there are ups and downs to every project (I was so looking forward to seeing them in and the shower window is really gorgeous) but when those are done they are going to be so beautiful and you will love them every day that you see them. I could see through your posture that you were disappointed. It will work out. The seedling mat solution is an extremely good choice (I use seedling mats every spring to start my garden and all my exotics and I wouldn't have thought of that one). I think I would have made myself a battery cellar (using the natural temperature of the soil to insulate against cold. Here the average temp of the soil is a consistent 55 degrees F (12.7 degrees C) which makes root cellaring (keeping cheese, veg, fruit and wine) perfect. I know they do the same in your region because I watch a yt channel that specializes in keeping alive ancient traditions that are just over the mountains to the West of you in both France and Spain. It is hilarious that you tell your chickens to "Come"...and they do it! 😂 Why is there always one that refuses to use the perfectly good nesting boxes? Before your next video my Bresse chickens will hatch and I will be up to my ears in little fluff balls.
Hi Martijn, always start Monday morning by watching your video (Australia) One thing that I really appreciate, which I don't think anyone else has commented on, is how you leave some blank space at the end, so those annoying suggestions of what to watch next don't intrude on the picture. I wish more RU-vidrs would learn that lesson.
I love your videos Martijn. You are a real inspiration. I am amazed at your cooking skills too. Thank you for posting your work. The solar system is fabulous. The chooks are having a great life running free, so cool. Stay well & happy. Cheers Noeline. 🇦🇺🙏👏👍❤️
Reg. Chickens and a low egg count that you mentioned in an earlier video, as i recall. There is a simple solution. Another farm gentleman on Danish national tv, with simular sized koop and freerange chickens, solved his low egg numbers with a simple lightbulb and a timer…
Hi Martin I not sure that the cabinet insulated with installed inverter and battery in the same place is a good solution. The inverter must be ventilated to reduce its temperature: if there is not any air vent in the cabin the system could shut down for overheating. During the winter this problem could be mitigated by the external low temperature but during the spring / summer the problem can arise. The second point is the battery could produce gas during its functiong, typically during the charge phase; and also in this case is suggested an air vent. Some time is used a fan that is controlled by the charge state to reduce the presence of the gas. Last suggestion using a cheap thermostat and a resistor (normally used in electric cabinet to keep the cabinets warm) you can keep the cabinet and battery over the minimum temperature required by the producer. Please check with your provider of the devices. 😁 any way you are doing a really impressive job
Een man die een band heeft met zijn kippen en zelfs zijn excuses aanbiedt als hij ze stoort tijdens de leg, heeft bij mij een streepje voor. Je huis wordt prachtig Martijn. Succes de komende week.
Quite an Amazing Week Martijn, Wonderful to see You helping out Joannes with the Cement Mixer, Seeing a newer System in the Electrical set-up. Fantastic work Done 👏🏼👏🏼 The Pie with Coffee looked great, a little burnt, but must have been Delicious. Great to see the Windows being fitted.. Such a Pleasure to see another Presentation, Thank You for sharing Your journey with Us all around The World. Cannot wait to see More next week 🙏
Martijn, Thank you so much for another beautiful video. I have to eat alone so I save your Sunday uploads to set a peaceful, calm tone and you and your girls keep me very good dinner company. Continue your careful craftsmanship as your cozy home comes together. Best of all things to you. I am sure you will be tucked in warm this winter. See you next week. 🌺
The color of your egg yolks is fantastic. Such a deep yellow, they're almost orange. SO fresh! An easy way to move a pie crust is to fold it in quarters, move it to the pan, and then unfold it. How exciting to have a better battery system AND new windows all in the same week! Looks like you'll be warm this winter - that will feel good.
Martijn~, Thank you for the soulful content, my friend. You are an inspiring and respected man, a true gentleman's gentleman. Stay healthy, stay happy, and have much success, sir! Thanx Thom...
Really love the slow, thoughtful pace. Sheer pleasure. Elegant, simple and patient filming & editing. I could go on for ever with this stuff. Wishing Martin the best for what comes next…🎉👏🌿
I’m watching this on Tuesday afternoon because my sweet wife and I went to Turin (from the Ligurian region) for the first time in 6 Italy vacations in 9 years. We walked quite a lot, 6 miles the first day and 9 miles the second day and enjoyed the city very much. The temperatures were reported to 22F degrees above normal in the Piedmont region so it was HOT for this Maine/Pacific Northwest boy but we’re on vacation so EVERYTHING is better than working! My wife knows I’m fully addicted to your videos and we intend to buy property here in Italy… she loved the farmlands surrounding Turin and we often looked up into your mountains wondering if it were cooler up there. While I doubt we are up for the exceptional challenge you have taken on, we will be patiently watching and waiting for the opportunity to be your (paying) AirB&B guests at some point in the future. Rock on Martijn, by all means possible, rock on! 😅❤
Are there no critters that end up foraging through your outdoor kitchen? I love the simplicity (& wicked hard work) of your lifestyle. Thanks for sharing it❤
Question is the window glass for the shower area have a reflective outer tint. That makes it so you can’t see in that much. I noticed that on your friends window or door at his house. But from the inside it’s like a regular view. I have that on my sliding glass door I love it!
Martin don't put so many coals on the top of your Dutch oven and rotate your lid and your pot! Your effort is so commendable because cast iron on an open fire is an art! I love watching Kent Rollings on RU-vid! I've learned a lot!! Love you so much!!😘❤️👍
So much progress! My goodness, the way the cabin changes with glass in the spaces - all your hard work, creativity and money is making a lovely home. It is a great joy to watch things develop.
You should consider building a “mini cellar” for your battery system. It will be insuleted from freezing and also during summer from overheating. On a hilly land like yours should not be problem.
You control the temperature of the oven by how many coals you put on top. 3 shovel fulls is too many. May about half a shovel full, spread around evenly. And you can check it after 15 minutes and close it back up again if you want.
Great progress Martijn! So exciting to see the little cabin so close to being snug and warm and all the care that is going into it. About the pie ... do not give up on your cast iron Dutch Oven on the fire. It is a life skill we have seen you execute perfectly in the past. Try once more with a smaller fire burned down to embers of about 5 centimeters or less. Use a small fireplace shovel to rake those little embers out and away from any lapping flames, and pack them down into a base about 10 centimeters tall and just a little wider than the bottom of the pot. Place the covered pot with bread or pie on the prepared bed of embers and do not walk away. Pop a top instead and enjoy the half hour resting by the fire. Placing embers on the lid is not a true necessity since the contents will brown nicely without them. Cheers!
Great video. You have accomplished alot. I can't believe the windows are coming in soon. Love the dogs. Chickens are so cute. Keep cooking with the Dutch oven you will see how quick you learn. Everything takes practice, and it's learned. Thank you for a beautiful video.
