How does Sammy keep his bike handling skills sharp under quarantine, you ask?
Every day he dons his Trialmaster jacket and rides the BSA around his practice section, here at the museum!
Still a dab hand today, it's not hard to imagine how he managed a total of 1400+ wins during his competition career.

Sammy and I were competitors at the 1976 Welsh International 2 Days Trial. On day two we drew the start line together (you started in pairs). Sammy looked across at me and asked how day one had been and then advised me to watch out as on day two as there were some tricky sections. The first section after the start was a road section and I had pulled ahead but then came the first offroad boggy section. After about 10 minutes I landed in a bog hole and my bike was really stuck. Shortly afterwards Sammy turned up and stopping at the edge of the hole, laughed and said „I told you so“. He then turned around and taking a short run at the hole while pulling the front of his bike up, he just flew across the hole like it wasn‘t there. I never finished day two but Sammy did. Sammy was riding a works Honda and I was on a Bultaco. His Honda was a 305cc and was a trials bike rather than an enduro bike and he had entered the Welsh as a clubman rather than an expert. He‘d been around for ages even then and had ridden for many manufacturers, most famously for Bultaco, although his Ariel 500 with the old GOV132 registration was most famous. He had really been retired from competition for many years but I think had made a bit of a comeback in the mid-70’s to promote the new Honda bikes. The competition „stars“ of that era were Malcolm Rathmell and Martin Lampkin in trials and the likes of Dave Jeremiah in enduros. Bultaco, Montesa and Ossa were the trials bikes of the day and Jawa were the enduros used by the British 6 Days team.

I got my first scrambler and trials bike at age 10. I still have to ride every day. Seeing you still at it, my hero, makes me say that I don’t have to be afraid that I won’t be able to drive my bikes for much longer. I’m 58. I saw Sammy in Australia circa 1970 when he put on a demo / display of trials skills at a site adjacent to the Heathcote Road in Western Sydney , the sandstone rocks he negotiated up and down I thought *no way* but he handled them with ease , if I'm not mistaken he was Trials Riding world champion at or around that time . He made quite a few fans that day , it was a good turn out of people and I lived just a few km down the road then , a great day I remember well , I was about 15 at the time . Glad to see him still going strong , makes me happy :-)

I've always been a Sammy Miller fan. IIRC he was quite a successful road racer in the smaller classes back in the early 60s (125 and 250cc?). We used to go to watch the SSDT in the 60s when he really came to the fore. However, I confess, I was more of a Gordon Jackson fan for some reason. It was something of a shock in 1965 to see Sammy had discarded the famous GOV 132 Ariel 500 in favour of a lightweight Bultaco 250cc but it heralded a new age in trials and the ultimate demise of the big 4 strokes. I seem to recall his being involved in riding a slightly modified Ariel Arrow up Ben Nevis. Wonderful to see SHM still riding a bit. A great rider in every respect.
