Sunday, June 6th, 2021, 10pm: The CSX AV dispatcher receives an emergency call from Q582 in Athens, GA. The conductor talks of being hit by a strong winds and trees down across the rails. Indeed, this didn't come as a surprise. A quick check of the radar images a few minutes earlier had revealed that a severe storm was to cross the track. In fact, a hook echo on reflectivity and a close red/green couplet on velocity radar indicated that the storm was rotating. It might have been a brief tornado. Consequently, Q582 was stuck on the main line near Pilgrim's Pride and no train could pass him for about 16 hours. N319-06 sat at Harper (Winder, GA), with Q583 tied down right behind him, and N319-03 had to wait in Auburn, GA. What's more, Q582 was a monster: 12,000 feet long, 203 cars. In this video, we watch Q582 crawl past the north end of Harper Siding. We then watch the two loaded N319 coal trains go north. As a bonus, the video also contains another coal train, N320, shot a few days later also at Harper Siding in magnificent afternoon light. Enjoy!
