Whats the stall on your torque converter? What torque converter did you get? I'm picking up a 4l80e next weekend for my Yukon and am researching what stall would work best for my 5.3. I'm on a budget so the high stall GM B82 might work @ 2000rpm stall but 2400 would be prefered. Good work and videos!

Thanks Eric! I ran the factory 80e converter right now. I think it stalls around 1600? I really need a stall converter in this truck but it needs to be able to tow. So don't know if i'll ever do it. If i do, it'll be medium, like closer to a 3k stall.

***** The suspension does good, but the steering is loose. I need to find the worn parts in the steering linkage or replace it all and also need an alignment. The slack in the steering scared me in this video when I was hauling ass (everything was shaking) and then came up on that corner. Plus the rear brakes need to be gone through. Think I have a leaking wheel cylinder.

I have the stepside 93 with 5.7 but I want to make small upgrades and one is transmission is hard for me to run in speed of traffic I live in San Francisco and is hard to keep it up with traffic and I want more speed so if I had to speed up I can manage to do that I'm young in this I'm learning so watching your truck motivate me to upgrade mine

sound nice and it moves along better than mine its been said the one i have has a 350(?) and TH700 might be the rearaxle in mine needs a different converter or different gears in the rear it just shifts and moves realy lazy , can you allso do autotune with youre setup ? (have the laptop autoadjust the fuelmap up or down to the preset AF level , data from the car's computer and the AF ratio comming from the lambdah while driving ) did you had to change anything to the gearshiftermecanics inside the older truck ? my guess is you need some stuff out of a overdrive automatic but i'm not sure wat will fit this type of truck or if a TH700 shifter will work on a 4L80E

Yea, these trucks usually came with bad rear end gear ratio at about 2.73. Also a 305 engine was more common. The there speed transmissions in the older trucks where TH350 and then the mid 80's started using the overdrive trans called a 700r4. Yes, that is the "tuning" that I'm currently learning how to do now with the HP Tuner software. It isn't cheap btw. That tuning setup usually costs about $500. Luckily I'm borrowing it from a friend. I was able to maintain the trucks gear shift linkage. You 700r4 Shifter bracket on the trans may transfer over to the 80e.

Love your truck sir! I have a 79 step side and don't know what direction to go. Upgrade to a 5.3 or go with a 454 carburetor. What's the miles per gallon?

Thank you dtano1! This truck was just swapped, so I don't have exact MPG yet. But on my last truck just like this that you'll see in my older video was getting about 17mpg city and 20 hwy making 400hp. I will just about always suggest any LS over old BBC or SBC. These LSx make the power, great MPG and last a long time. The list goes on. I don't even care to see a 454, 400 or 350 anymore. Its old technology, outdated, kinda like having a flip phone...

Your videos are great, enjoy watching them they give me lots of ideas for future project on a 75 c10. I can see you have lots of experience with these engines. I have a question if you don't mind answering. what are the differences between 2006 Silverado 4.8l engine and a 2010 5.3l engine from a Silverado? My 4.8 is knocking and need to swap engine out. would this 2010 5.3l work with modifications?

Thanks for the feedback Danny! Glad you're enjoying the show. On the '06 4.8 and '10 5.3, I don't really get to play with those very often because theres not as many in the salvage yards, but I'd bet that they'll swap over pretty easy since they're both after 2005 when the LS motors changed. You may have some DOD or VVT to figure out, but I bet it can be done easily. I'd do it.

In this video it had 2.73s. My last truck had the 2.41 gears before I swapped them. I need to make a new video now since the truck has been tuned a little better (still needs more work) and it now has 3.42 gears. I also welded the diff. So I need to make a video showing how much that sucks to drive around town... lol

AGearHead4Life AGearHead4Life thanks man! An update! I didn't get the trans but in turn I got a 5.3 with e85 injectors with almost 30k on the clock, (2) 411 pcms, (1) DBC harness with everything attached, and (1) DBW harness with almost everything attached! So I ended up with a heck of a deal.... especially bull I really didn't need the trans because I'm going nv4500 manual for the low gearing and a 5th gear for highway cruising so I think I'll stick with my th350 for now! How's the truck coming along man? You like the short bed better and everything is good?

Thanks James! I hope to install them Next month if I can come up with the funds. Its not tuned correctly yet and has horrible gears but I'd say it feels the same right now. So Im excited to image the difference with a finished tune a huge difference in gear ratio.

Nice truck! I'm enjoying my 355 C10 now, but i would like to do a 5.3 4L80E Swap in my 84 s10 Blazer. Would i have to get a new driveshaft for the Blazer or is the stock one ok?

Thanks Juwon! No, I reuse the stock driveshaft. Just change out the yoke. You'll need to make sure that it'll clear you trans tunnel though. I think it may.

Thank you Reeves! Yea, I'm strongly considering other wheels. I just don't have a final decision on that or the money yet. They don't sell those wheels that I had on my last truck anymore. They're discontinued. I will roll with these wheels for a while. First thing on the list is a $500 posi unit. Time and money slowing me down. lol I've already gotten the adapters to run the small GM bolt pattern wheels, like the 2010 Camaro wheels. That may be what I'll do.

Me too man! Nah this is just a daily driver. Thats why i went with a small cam. With this build I'm trying to find the perfect balance of performance, tow ability and fuel efficiency as a daily driver and be ready to tow my Camaro across the country. The flat tops raised my compression. When going with boost, people usually lower the compression with dished pistons, thicker head gaskets or larger chambered heads.

I finally installed my 5.3 ls into my olds cutlass. I went along the same ls build you installed into your camaro. THIS may be a stupid question but were you able to drive your comaro a little without getting a complete tune done first. The problem is it will run at idle but as soon as I take it on the street and give it gas it dies.

+Warren Frost Yea, usually you can drive it some. Usually the problem will be that it won't idle well. Did you double check your fuel pressure?

+AGearhead4Life fuel pressure is good...I spoke to some other people and I was told that I just need to adjust the idle screw or the idle air control valve up a little bit more so it will run long enough until I get the motor correctly tuned for my the setup. Does this sound right?

I stay in Alabama near mobile and the local tuners are charging from 400 to 475 for a tune. Will take awhile to save up the money

Nope! Just swapped out the yoke that slips into the trans and it fits. The length is the same, depending on where you place the engine with the motor mounts.

I used the stock drive shaft. It's all about the placement with the motor mounts.

I've been in the same position before. What i do is know how much I want to spend, save that amount or get a loan and then wait until I find one at that cost. the 80's Chevy trucks should cost around $1500-$2500. Just while you're saving keep an eye on Craigslist and the sides of roads. When I drive around I'm always looking for abandoned projects in peoples yards. You can get them cheap that way.

Jason Olson Yea, that was factory headliner for this 1987 truck in this video. It was peeling, so I've since recovered it with an aftermarket design material.

Thanks Valdez! Yea, I guess I've never discussed that on video yet. Only on text and on FB. I use a 91 Suburban gauge cluster since it has a digital speedo. Then just run the one wire to it. May also have to change settings in the LS PCM if it doesn't read correct.

Yep the full size! Check eBay or get a clean 4x4 & remove the front axle and transfer case and I stall the cross member from a junkyard 2wheel drive with suspension.

+NoOneImportant556 Long tube headers, dual 2.25 exhaust with a single 70 series Flowmaster muffler. I plan to change to dual 2.5" exhaust with a single Magnaflow muffler because I get a rasp at ~3000 rpm that is annoying me. I hope the Magnaflow helps that. The Magnaflow also has an internal X-pipe and is a straight through design.

Yea I've got a 2015 1500 with the 5.3 I'm looking at putting a Super 44 with a 2" exit dump.. Or side port.. Not sure where I'm going to flow it yet. But your truck sounds mean! Little more aggressive that I'm looking for but dam close when you punch it. I figured if I come close to your set up and left all the cats it would tone it down to what I'm looking for.

Juan Demateo At the time of this video, three years ago, it likely still had 2.73 gears and the factory stall in it. There's always lots of variables to take into consideration when making comparisons. I post videos in steps as the project progresses. It's probably twice as fast now. Also it's hard to determine that it's "so slow" from a video, especially without a speedo or knowing how much throttle was given.

Yea I meant mine bro... my truck has 4:10 gears 3600 tc stage 2 4l80e with transbrake ..engine is a 5.3l with a torquer v2 cam .. stock heads .. long tube headers 102 fast Intake.. it's slow I have no pick up from a dig .. but one I get going I'm going!! 🏁

Yep, stock converter. I expect it to and haven't noticed a problem yet. The tune is off though and it stumbles at the crack of the throttle. So I haven't had the full experience yet. But these 2.73's are bogging it down in combination with the first gear in the 4l80e.

Yea, I strongly considered the 224r. Its an awesome cam, but I had to hold back and remember the purpose of this build as an efficient daily driver and to tow my Camaro. The 220r will probably be a lil better to tow with. Not saying that the 224r wouldn't work. Its is a very hard choice between those two. Actually you're going with the 6.0, so that 224r will be better for yours then.

Curious have you ever thought of converting the 4L80E to a six speed... It's a relatively simple change of the valve body in the trans ( it's a valve body offered by GM performance for towing as well as some other companies)? Would be an interesting point of discussion cause I don't think most people know the option to go 6 speed auto inexpensively exist.

They say around 500hp in stock form, but I've seen guys putting a lot more then that through them. Guys are running 9s and 10's in the quarter on these with just the HD2 kit in them.

I just check out the junk yards and wait for them to get one in, but LKQ junk yard is nation wide and can usually get you one. Their prices are on their website. I usually expect the average price of a 5.3 with 120k+ miles complete with harness, front accessories and all to cost about $750.

yep, good guess at the wheels. somewhere around there by the time its tuned. Maybe not that much torque at the wheels though. Im guessing 350/350 at the wheels once done. Cant wait to find out.
