Charles McKinney and I were talking about the therapeutics of knapping just the other day. He spotted my neck tie falling into the frame of my recent video. It had been that kind of day and I just sat down and concentrated on knapping till the day's troubles were forgotten. Didn't even take off my tie. I figure it's better than drinking even though my points turn out looking like I was drunk.

Drunk points, yep. Been there... both versions. 😁

@@KnapperJackCrafty You're spot on about a knappers intentions while they narrate as well. I can't talk and knap, so I try to add a little voiceover on afterwards. This has the effect of me asking myself, what was I thinking or doing there, when I dub the voiceover, and I'm never sure what I say is what I was thinking at the time, or hindsight. I see the hindsight play out in real-time with some knapper videos. Freeze Cracked is a hugely analytical knapper. Every. Single. Flake. He's thinking about it. Forward and backwards. But his mind switches between his predictive analysis and his hind analysis so quickly, it takes a while to figure out which he's doing. Is he telling you his intent or his result? ...and I think he's frankly one of the easier ones to read. A beginner has a real struggle to navigate all that and your advice on it is solid.

What I hear you saying regarding intent vs. result is that flint knapping is a metafor for life.

I have watched many hours of you knapping a host of different materials with varying levels of narration, this video is one of the best. It was educational as always, however this video gave us more insight into how you feel about different things. I will be watching these mahogany videos more than once since my yard has buckets of glass buttes. Thank you again for all you do.

Can't find a mahogany obsidian dalton, but found plenty of plain obsidian dalton points. The link I sent shows a massive Clovis out of Utah chert with an obvious overshot interpreted as a controlled overshot. I don't think that can be proven since there was only the one in the work piece, can it?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 2 года назад
@@marycomeau9364 No. "Controlled Overshot" is a theory. Cannot be proven to be intentional.

Like your passion for knapping. It's addictive . Your videos help my addiction, but a box or couple of obsidian spalls would be a cure. Hope you feel better...stay safe & stay healthy. CU next video.

Thanks. I think I'm becoming immune to the nasal spray, so I backed off. But I'm going to load up again in a few days and crank out a bunch of work... 😎

We have one source of obsidian in Scotland from the isle of Arran called "Arran pitchstone" it is difficult to work but there are microliths and arrowheads found all over south west central Scotland made from it . The source of the stone is a protected site so unfortunately we can't have a bash at knapping it ! Spoiled for choice across the pond 😉

I see. Yeah, I've heard about Scottish obsidian. Too bad it's not freely available. I wonder if obsidian from Greece and Turkey are available to you...

Mahogany is defiantly the most different of the obsidians. I had a hard time as well until I ended up with a bunch for some reason. Practice, practice, practice.
