I applied and Coppercoated in 2011. The problem your boat suffered was well understood then. I used solvent free epoxy supplied by Coppercoat. On the upside it's only two coats (because it doesn't evaporate) on the downside you need good weather (above 12 Deg with low humidity) It was perfect when sold in 2018.

Watching you go at it with that scraper is giving me nightmarish flash backs of the couple of months yard work I did t 'get some experience' working on boats, which ended up being 95% scraping boat hulls 😆

Wow! Talk about a "heads up" about Coppercoat! Way too much work to get that stuff off, but then you did mention that they do not recommend installing it they way it was on Skua, anymore. I can't imagine spending a week doing all of that scraping and sanding! Ryan must have been one very tired guy each evening! The place you were on the hard looks quite nice and the view from the bow was pretty nice. Nice to know that all of this work was a prelude to your Big crossing!

Hi guys, big job cleaning the hull off, reminded me of doing a similar job on a 48’ wooden boat but I was much younger then. Fairing those craters will have made quite a difference to your speed when you crossed the pond, that was one rough hull. I’m glad my Rival hull was Coppercoated professionally and seems to be nice and fair. Looks like a great yard to be in and not a bad view when relaxing on the deck after a hard days work. Hats off to you guys, for doing the hard graft and a thorough job! There is no satisfactory substitute for hard labour and two weeks of boatyard work, esp hull prep is more than most people can stomach! But please, please remember your PPE! (Personal Protective Equipment) Cheers, From Mike :-)

I saw a guy use a power wood planer hand held obviously set to take off a very thin layer at a time and it was amazing how fast he took that boat down to the gel coat.

Mr. Ryan. Three items. (1) You and your wife bring so much joy to your audience. Ignore the trolls. (2) Suggest you invest in a good deep sea fishing rod. Then purchase a long pole with a net at the end to scoop up your catch. (3) try obtaining a yellow trolling feather. I think you will like the results. Keeping a boat takes effort and patience. I applied a product called “Gelshield” after having the hull and sandblasted first. It took days filling and sanding the hull. And my boat was just 26’4” . Brilliant work guys. And you will notice the difference in boat performance too. Hope you’ve managed to sort your lockdown out and can move on.

There is a tool that goes on a grinder that has spur looking things we used on aluminum to clean. It was amazing to me it left a smooth surface , my boss said it was invented to remove marine growth.

You did well getting all that done in 10 days, impressive! Hopefully with all the sailing you've been doing it's stayed clean. When we left Cartagena our hull was still looking great, but 2 months in lock down in the Mar Menor and we've all but taken root! Got a real shock when I got the snorkel out last week. It took me half an hour to find the engine raw water intake today to give that a clean, it's so green in here. Looking forward to getting our into clear water!

Great video guys, I have seen too much go wrong with coppercoat even with factory reps supervising. I'm doing my bottom in a few months and would never trust it enough to do after some of the horror stories I have witnessed. Good to see it coming together!

Can also use a chemical bottom paint stripper. You put it on, cover it in plastic, leave it for a few days, scrape it off and then sand remaining off.

Looks like a tough job, a huge degree of patience and a large surface area to give 100% attention to every bit. How long did the whole job take, rough cost and did you hire or buy tools. I assume this exercise is a major part of annual budget? Did you sleep on board every night?

10 full days. No, we bought the tools - they’re useful to have on board anyway. The cost of smoothing the hull must have been around €450 for the tools (we had to replace the sander halfway), discs, sand paper, etc However we already owned the angle grinder from the previous refit, so it cost us about €350 at this stage. Yes, we slept on board every night.

I’ve had two boats copper-coated ... both were done professionally. Neither caused me any trouble. Both performed exactly as forecast by the manufacturer. In my experience it’s a fabulous system, but the hull simply *must* be prepared throughly. In amateur hands - in the wrong environmental conditions - copper-coat will not work correctly. Think long and hard before opting to install copper-coat. If you can’t be sure of doing it properly, just don’t go there! Also, loved that dinghy bow-thruster!! Go, you two 😎⛵️💯

You did that pretty quickly. It is really hard graft. We ground all the old antifouling and gelcoat ( there was osmosis) off our 27’ boat with a drum sander on a drill. It took weeks and several trips back to Black &Decker for repairs to the drill under warranty (the gelcoat dust fused around the motor brushes). My forearms and shoulders ached a lot!

Hi Ryan, the last time we were in Almerimar about 14 years back , you were not allowed to work on the outside of the hull only the inside. only the marinero`s or local contractors were allowed . They would even make inspections to see it the yacht owners had been working in the night and threaten to put your yacht back in the water if work had been discovered. I guess that practice has now stopped, and you are free to carry out your own work. We ended up having to go to Aguadulce where they allowed us to work.

Just wondering if a heat gun would have been worth trying on the hull. I've had some exciting times getting into travel lifts. One with no power where the dock assistant assured me he had it all under control until he didn't.

As a guy that's sanded and prepped millions and millions of board feet of drywall lay your whole hand flat on the hull and take long slow strokes and you'll feel the hull for bad spots faster

Those carters and moon like surface is exactly what my coppercoat type antifoul looked like. I couldn't remove it in the time I had so just sanded down 36 grit and put antifoul over it with a tie coat. That worked fine. It would be nice to completely remove it though at some point. I was in Almerimar last year. Is the green yard dog still around?

the pencil hash marks are called a guide coat...you can do the same thing much faster by using a very light coat of spray paint then sanding that back to reveal the low points...much fast and much easier.

I learnt that trick spray painting my car. I used simple black and then sanded it before applying the other coats. RU-vid is wonderful in that respect!

Man, I'm so sorry for all the work you had to do in the bottom of this boat. I got tired even before you've started by just looking what was ahead. Anyway, you could also have used a multi tool with a scraper attachment to remove that coppercoat. I wish I could have given you this suggestion beforehand. Good luck.

We don’t know - it was like this when we bought her. We just delayed doing the hull by a year because we couldn’t afford a haul out when we bought her.

An A+ for diligence and hard work. Of course, there is always a "But!" Ain't RU-vid fun !!! 😁 First, you need to practice your "Back and Fill". I have seen a skipper crab a 45" long keeled ketch (not counting the bowsprit), 150 ft down a marina alley with very expensive boats on either dock, with barley 10 ft either side to spare. As far as fairing goes, what you did was more "smoothing" then fairing. You need a fairing board, aka agony board to do a proper job. That rectangular sander you first used was an orbital sander, not a random orbit sander like the round disc one you later used. Anyway, happy sailing ad keep the videos coming. I assume this one was before the Coronavirus hit. Hope you are safe.

Rick Owens Hi Rick, yeah, we call them ‘Torture boards’ for similar reasons. I’ve seen four apprentices swinging off the one four metre torture board before. Looks impressive when they’re all perfectly synchronised and the results are impressive when used in professional hands. Get it wrong though and it’s an arduous process to smooth out the hollows!...

It was ok for us, plenty of amenities and the stumble inn for a Sunday roast! But not really the genuine Spanish feel, Almeria and Cartagena were both really nice towns and more of a Spanish vibe :)

It depends on how much antifouling you put on every couple of years and if you scrape it off before applying new antifouling. If you just add layers and layers of antifouling, you could be doing this job every 6 years or so. Also this job was way worse because of the failed coppercoat if you just need to remove antifouling it’s a breeze compared to copercoat

@@SailingKittiwake Yep but just for 24 hours though to drop off an engine block for the locals to use for a mooring. We then sailed to Falmouth in Antigua for race week and won a prize for being the oldest vessel to enter 😂 She was a gaff rigged ketch Baltic Trader

You can use a solvent primer but you have to let it gas out.

Sandblasting wouldnt work as it would blast the exposed underneath areas as much as the coppercoat, so you’d end up with holes in your primer and gelcoat etc.

I dont think chemicals would strip the copper as much as they’d damage the primer and gelcoat.

@@SailingKittiwake I used a chem stripper on my boat. It worked well on old ablative, and paint, was easy on gel-coat, would not touch copper - at all.

Well faired and smooth surfaces are very pretty, but isn't the latest race boat theory that a textured surface is slippier and thus quicker than a perfectly smooth finish that actually sucks the water to it and thus slows it down? Anyway, another great vid, shipmates; but really weird, knowing you are actually, currently, on the other side and we are all on covid lockdown.

It’s a bad idea to use a graphite pencil to mark the places of the primer. Graphite is a good separator and places where it remained under the primer are potential places for the formation of blister.

Not true. Coppercoat is a water based epoxy. The epoxy will offer some protection to the hull (Not quite as effective as epoxy without impurities in it) I know of several that have been antifouled without a problem. (Obviously not when blistered though)

Where I live in the U.S., no boatyard would allow the kind of grinding and power sanding you are doing without tarping and tenting off the boat to prevent your dust and debris from one, getting all over your neighbors' boats and two, getting into the local environment. Most boatyards around here don't even allow do it yourself work anymore.

Our yard puts your boat in an enclosure as standard practice. They have environmental clean-up and special drainage to ensure nothing escapes into the waterways. You can do your own work but I'm sure the local tradies would like that stopped, but then we would all go to Boatworks instead. There they encourage own work, provide motel units, showers, cooking facilities and boaties lounge. They have superb chandelries and every trade in the marine world.

Pretty much every boatyard in southern europe dry sands the antifoul. Many have yard dogs that are green or blue from all the dust. That's just how it is especially in Greece, and Spain where I've lifted out. Not saying it's right, but that's how it works.

Dennis Conner couldn't swim when he competed in the America's cup races, I remember a reporter in Australia asking him about it and his response was that it kept him motivated to stay on the boat and keep the boat the right way up (not capsize). Swimming is not a requirement for sailing, just recommended.

First time watching one of your videos so perhaps this is not typical but why did the girl not help with the sanding? Then she says in her sexy accent that it took him 10 days to sand the hull! 10 days! and not 1 second of footage of the girl at work. Jeez, thanks for the help honey!

I’m his sugar mummy 😂 I was working to pay for the yard + refit materials and doing everything else (food shopping, cooking, going to the chandlery, picking up materials for the refit, editing videos,...) 😊 On our previous 26ft catamaran, which cost a lot less to refit, I sanded both hulls myself and helped out with everything (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_XC-HyJOm0.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B1xhaDVSkbk.html). With this boat, 37ft, I needed to make more money, as it's bigger and we did a complete DIY re-rig (expensive!). We’re not like other channels - we’re on a very small budget, so every time I got paid by a client, I ordered more materials/parts. If I didn’t do paid work 7 days a week during the boat works, we could do no refit. Sorry if that offends you, but it was the only way to do a refit AND cross the Atlantic on time for us. When we win the lottery, I’ll be able to help again 😉 Elena

Hello Elena, thank you for the reply and the explanation. Although I am not sure you qualify as a sugar momma, your man is definitely pulling his own weight. Sounds to me like good teamwork and cooperation. Nothing wrong with that. However I would like to see you get dirty the next time. Good luck with the refit!

It was a joke, hence the emojy. I've gotten plenty dirty before and after, don't worry :) I work damn hard all year round to be able to afford us to live on a boat (I've been the one earning our living for 3 years now). I worked 7 days a week while Ryan was doing this boat work (and he rightly had some days off in between), and I work the rest of the year while we sail. Without my modest income, we couldn't do any of this - the sailing, or the boat work. So I have nothing to feel sorry for. In fact, most men we meet would LOVE to do boat maintenance a few months a year in exchange of not working at all. Feminist women should be supportive of other women, not criticise them... All the best and stay safe.

@13:30; Please don’t tell me that the cleaning solvents you were wiping on bare handed, were MEKP! (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide...) MEKP IS PROBABLY THE NASTIEST CHEMICAL IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY!!! The SLOWEST ingestion path to your kidneys, is through your skin - which takes approximately 45 seconds! The fastest is to drink it (Takes about 5 seconds to make it’s way to your kidneys!) Please always use rubber gloves (Thick ones, if you use thin ones you’ll see what the MEKP does to them in no time at all...)

You shouldn’t use flapper discs on a hull. Bad idea. Use the rubber disk with the flat pads and keep your grinder flat. Much better result.

@@SailingKittiwake well, you can see the groves it made on each stroke. then it needed heavy sanding with a flat sander. by using flat discs you don't get the grooves. It was just a suggestion. something I learnt from Sail life video's and put into practice on my own boat and it sure saves time.

Thats a horrible job to do. I have done it twice and have promised myself the next time to have it blasted off. Coppercoat seems more trouble than its worth
