Those chain plates should be bullet proof! Great design. I too discovered how inexpensive mill finished stainless is and have been researching what it takes to finish it. Looks easy just take your time and go threw all the steps. Another awesome DIY boat repair. Keep living the dream!

"There is always time for lubrication!" I find when drilling steel that cooling the drill heads in some cutting oil or similar really helps getting through hardened steels. Takes a bit of time and can be a bit messy, but...

Great to see you getting stuck in and making things so well; very impressed. One thing to think about when polishing stainless is keeping any pads, abrasives, etc, that have been used for mild steel, or other ferrous metals, well away from your stainless. You can embed ferrous dust into your lovely stainless and wonder why you're getting rust streaks for years after. Our stainless provider, when I worked making yachts, wouldn't allow ferrous into his workshop or van. =:-))

I'm impressed with your attention to detail. Did you consider Dyneema? Earlier this year I met a man whose family have a boat building business. I asked his opinion of Dyneema. He said all their yachts are rigged with Dyneama. Stronger and lighter than steel it reduces weight above deck. I'm considering re-rigging my Hartley 34 with Dyneama. Cheers Gray. Australia

when you drill steel, use a few drops of oil on your drill bit, helps keep it sharp and less grabby so less prone to breaking

Ryan/Elena: WARNING: The tee bolts at the bottom of your turnbuckles are the original tee bolts manufactured at the Tayana yard and are very prone to internal corrosion with potentially catastrophic results. Several TOG members, including myself, have had these fittings fail. Some have even lost their rigs due to this failure. The problem is caused by the design of the tee bolts: instead of being a single casting like most manufacturers use, the Tayana yard manufactured their own tee bolts by drilling a threaded hole in round stainless bar stock and then inserted stainless all thread into the hole. The problem with this design is that rain water and sea water makes its way into the joint via the threads and, slowly but surely, starts to corrode the joint in the wet, oxygen starved environment inside the fitting. That design flaw was exacerbated by the use of 304 stainless instead of 316. The bottom line is that these Tayana tee bolts are ticking time bombs, and you can’t inspect them without taking them apart, which is virtually impossible to do without destroying them. Your new external chainplates are great, but they won’t save your rig when one of those tee bolts let go.
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 4 года назад
Hi Dayton, how can you tell that they are Tayana originals? As the turnbuckles were replaced when the mast was replaced, and they look identical to the staloks we had on Kittiwake, I assumed they were staloks, what’s an identifying feature of the Tayana ones?
@sailorman607
@sailorman607 4 года назад
Sailing Kittiwake I assume that these were Tayana originals because most older Tayana 37s I saw back in the early 2000s had them, and many Tayana owners were reporting failures back then. I think there are some pictures posted in the TOG ftp site. It could be that other Taiwanese yards also used this design. Almost every T-37 I see these days has replaced them. I assumed that all the current rigging manufacturers had stopped producing these flawed designs, but if you recently purchased your turnbuckles new then apparently my assumption is incorrect. The distinguishing feature is the threading going into the barrel of the tee bolt. As I stated, you will inevitably get corrosion in that joint, and it will not be visible to you until it is too late. If your tee bolts are relatively new, you don’t have to worry yet, but I wouldn’t trust them offshore if they are more than 10 years old. My tee bolt sheared off on a light wind day at about age 20. I don’t trust any stainless steel fittings on my boat that I can’t inspect on a regular basis. That’s why I always disapproved of the way the Ta Yang yard designed their un-inspectable chainplates bolts, stem bolt fittings, and turnbuckle tee bolts.

Hi Kire, we can’t afford to be guinea pigs for new “trends” - only a few boats crossed an ocean with dyneema rigging so far. We’d rather be safe and save the money 😊 Dyneema is also more expensive than wire rigging and Sta-Lok fittings.
