Welcome to Folkston! This is the first of two videos from visits to Folkston, GA before and after the excursion to Florida's East Coast. A stopover in Folkston is almost a "must" if one goes to or comes from Florida. Virtually all CSX Florida rail traffic goes through the Folkston Funnel, where the Jesup Subdivision merges into the Nahunta Subdivision. In this video, we watch the typical manifest and intermodal trains on this line. It is not as busy as it once was, but still worth a visit.
This video is the first episode in the "Expedition to the Deep Southeast" series (www.youtube.co....

Never ceases to amaze me, one or two locos capable of pulling such monster trains.

@brandonreeves5979 3 года назад
@@mbmars01 I didn’t realize there were that many different types. 🤯
@mbmars01
@mbmars01 3 года назад
It surprises me, too, but virtually all EMD types have vanished from CSX's through trains. One can only see them on some local or yard jobs. Also, the Dash 8s and Dash 9s are almost gone and the first AC44s have gotten rebuilt. I already notice I see fewer and fewer ES40DCs. It's really all about ES44AHs and ET44AHs now. CSX runs so few trains nowadays that they can use only the most modern engines on almost all of them.

Nice video but it really hammers home to me the fact that Folkston probably won't be what it was again when I started fanning. PSR, combining and abolishing are to blame. The absence of foreign power is just sad. The auto-rack trains themselves were almost guaranteed to have some oddball power. Q457 always had a huge amount of power, mostly offline but if there was any unusual critter that had to go to Waycross that day it would be on that one. I even caught a tri-rail and two switchers on one of those. My record there was 33 in daylight. Now I hear the average total per day is around 25 in a full 24 hours.
@mbmars01
@mbmars01 2 года назад
That's true. It's still fun to watch trains there, but yes, there are much less than there used to be. 25 trains in 24 hours is certainly a reasonable estimate.

Excellent! Great catches. It's always a good thing when you can do some railfanning away from your home grounds. You have a truly remarkable camera eye my friend, and it shows in each and every production. Well worth every minute of watch time. Can't wait for your next road trip!

It's not a big surprise railfans loves Folkston. Long straight tracks with nice wide open fields on both sides. And the traffic is significant too. We see a bunch of long trains here. Do you know what is the purpose of the boxcar on the intermodal train at 3:15? And why is there a "do not hump" sign on it? I thought they only use buffer cars on ethanol loads. Very interesting. Great catches with cool locomotives. Thanks for the quick update. :)
@mbmars01
@mbmars01 3 года назад
You immediately detected the most curious thing in the video: this ominous boxcar. I hope someone familiar with the matter can help clarify its purpose. I know that CN has these track surveillance cars on some trains; maybe CSX does the same now? Yea, Folkston is always worth a visit. I always enjoy spending a couple hours there.

Great video. You have excellent camera and editing skills. Most folks would call the last train an Intermodal vs a manifest train. I know CSX and NS are doing a mix with PSR, but that was all I-modal.
@mbmars01
@mbmars01 3 года назад
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! That's true, it gets a bit confusing with all these mixed blocks on all kinds of trains. Honestly I don't know what's in that single box car right behind the engines. This didn't look like a normal box car.

Nice caboose - in great shape (the Chessie as well)! I see the single stack train and wonder if it has a height limit en route (so used to seeing double stacks). Great weather - looked a bit hot at one camera view :)
@mbmars01
@mbmars01 3 года назад
These cabooses have been restored and serve as cabins for train-happy families. Yes, you're right. The north-east bound intermodals have height restrictions because of tunnels along the route that don't have enough clearance for doubles stacks. And yes, it was hot and humid - but that's what it is in the south in summer lol
