I am interested to know how the ram difference affects document size and layer limits in procreate. In the past as the ipads have increased their ‘ram’, procreate was able to increase the maximum layer count for a project. This could be a decision maker for me as i have created largish (30”x30” @300 ppi)illustrations in procreate and was frustrated by the 8 layer limit in the project.

@@godling_jin I guess I should have done. Little research…apparently Procreate on the new m1 iPads can only access about 1/2 as many layers as older iPads because Procreate does not yet recognize the new m1 iPads capacity, and caps the maximum layers/size to prevent crashing. Procreate is working on fixing this…so until then we will not know…but it is too late for me…I already ordered the 1 tb 2021 iPad to get the 16 gb of “ram”. Hopefully the Procreate 5.2 update that is coming will fix it. Seeing S my new iPad will not arrive until the end of June, I may not need to worry

I would still get the 16GB RAM option if I could tbh. Word is that Apple currently limits the amount of RAM all apps can access to to 5GB at this time (I’m one of the reasons for that is if apps could access all 16GB RAM and all of that memory was used actively you would nuke your battery), but Apple could change / tweak how iPadOS works with iPadOS 15 this summer, and there’s obviously a reason they put 16GB RAM into the 1 & 2TB models this year. So, I would still get the 16GB model if I had the money, for futureproofness.

That's kinda unfortunate. It basically makes the situation similar to how people used to use SAI1 before SAI2 got stable enough. The need to create detailed high resolution painting meet the hard limit of 32 bit program that is about 3.8GB. And SAI1 would crash when ram limit is reached. Most software is more ram efficient than SAI1, though, but it doesn't change the fact that this ram cap isn't sufficient enough, especially when factor in the need to multitask. I guess the only fortunate thing here is that, non-pro users would likely not need that much power, while pro users conserve layer count way better so it's more workable.

If you can afford it, go with the extra RAM- it’s future proof. If your a professional digital artist, I would wait a little longer on the comparison videos that come out after the new iOS and software optimizations. @digitaldevigner4080
@digitaldevigner4080 3 года назад
The higher ram I think will matter more for future proofing but in my experience once the ram isn’t enough the rest of the system likely isn’t enough either. Plus I read a rumor that IPadOS may currently only use up to 8GB. That will likely change after WWDC so maybe once IPadOS is updated the 16GB version will start to see an advantage. Finally IPadOS has always done well with less ram. Apps in the background is not really the same as having ten apps open on a computer. None of the background apps should be using very much if any ram. I’m an app developer and when apps are sent to the background we usually have to save the current data to the asynchronous storage. Then when an app is resumed it actually reads that async storage to get the app back to where it left off. So really the only main use of ram is inside of each sandboxed individual app in the foreground. That means only really document size is going to be impacted by ram. For example the 8GB may be limited to a 30 minute video project with 200 clips vs the 16GB which could do much longer. I’m just making up numbers now but typically on IPadOS that’s the only time more Ram really matters. This is why Apple always told us we don’t need to close background apps. They actually don’t use much ram at all and the garbage collecting in the OS will close what isn’t needed. This is why we can play a demanding game for days and all our background apps are still there.
@ericgarant2257
@ericgarant2257 Год назад
What do you mean by « Asynchronous storage » ? Strangely enough, back when I had an iPhone X with 3Gigs of RAM with iOS 14, I could’t have more than 4 Apps in the background including the one in the foreground. If I wanted to open an 5th App, all the others would automatically refreshing as I opened them one by one. Why is that ? Thanks !

Probably the ram is made for pro users using heavy apps For example I’m a music producer so more ram means I can have more Plug ins and audio units loaded in real time on GarageBand or cubasis 3 ( or maybe even Logic Pro if apple releases it)
@MacSoundSolutions
@MacSoundSolutions 3 года назад
Agreed these tests are a bit silly, he should have loaded ram hungry audio apps that run samplers and synths using AUM or another DAW and see how many can load before it chokes the iPad. My 2018 iPad Pro can only run 6 to 8 synths in AUM max due to memory limits of 4 gigs. He should have also used a ram utility to show how much ram was actually being used as he loaded more apps. Audio pros will no doubt want 16 gigs
@VictorIbelles
@VictorIbelles 3 года назад
@@MacSoundSolutions exactly , the ram upgrade it’s not meant for opening apps faster or having too much tabs on safari, it’s for apps that get limited on ram instead of cpu power (like DAWs for example... you can record as many tracks as your ram lets you) When I was watching the video I thought “maybe I don’t need the 16model”. But then I remembered I use my iPad for Music production hahahah

So yeah actually the 8 GB version has great RAM management. I just bought me a 2022 iPad Pro 12.9" with the M2 chip (I bought the 256 GB model because the SSD speed is way better than the 128 GB, just like the M2 MBA 512 GB is better than the 256 GB). And I find it's much faster than my old M1 in gaming (higher fps, pretty much consistently perfect frame rates) and otherwise I notice no difference! BTW that Apple Pencil Hover is super cool

I went for the 1tb model as it will be my only device and I had a MacBook Pro from 2013 and recently traded it in cause what I needed it for didn’t use Mac specific apps so I’m pretty excited about having more space :) I didn’t want cloud storage and I didn’t want to carry an external drive so I opted for the more storage space. Great to see the differences though as I really wasn’t sure what to go for.

I use an app called Concepts, RAM plays a big role in the number of images I can put in a single file use very high resolutions, 12,000 x 7,000 pixels and more. My old iPAD (6th gen) could manage 1-2 images. My new iPAD pro (2020) with the same images can support 7-8. So, in theory, the 16 GB model might support twice that.

And part of me also think that Adobe will be there to announce full versions of Photoshop and maybe even illustrator. They could even announce the full suit going to iPad OS giving that the whole cc suite is also on the Mac with the same M1 chip. Of course, this is a touch based device so they might announce only Photoshop and Illustrator for now (or even only Photoshop) at this moment.

I really, really wanted to love it so much but the software is far too limited and is holding it back way too much. I could not justify keeping that device. Such a shame, too limited. I got bored too quickly.If nothing happens at WWDC, sadly I will not buy the iPad Pro, I also never use the iPad to video call so centre stage is useless, the camera quality is not that great either. I’m not sure what he’s trying to show by opening apps the way he does. We all know Apple takes a “snapshot” of apps, and when you tap on one it opens almost instantly. With the fast SoCs Apple has been making, most of the time, it seems as though the app was open, even though it wasn’t. So I’m not sure what this proves. He needs to take a big video file and do some real rendering. Or a big CAD file. He hasn’t done that. I ordered a 16GB model, and I’m happy about that. Even if some apps aren’t yet optimized for this processor, they will be soon. And it’s wrong to say that apps will be optimized for the 8GB model. As always, if an app has more RAM available, and the files your working on can use it, then the app will.

You should come back to run this test in another 12-18 months and see how it still performs. Apple is constantly releasing updates that cripple older hardware to get people to upgrade. I have the gen 3 ipad pro and it was smooth for over a year and a half. Then they pushed a few updates that started to cause apps to crash or shut down due to lack of memory. Everyone has seen this with their phones as well. It's basically the game they play to annoy people to upgrade hardware every two years. 8GB of RAM might be great today. However, I can almost guarantee they will release a new OS in a year or two that will consume 6GB of RAM and then leave the other apps 2GB to run on.
