Been a while since I watched this. Mayweather earned my respect. He took Ray deep. Howard Cosel was horribly biased towards Leonard. That fight easily could have changed history for them both.
I was a fighter just like sugar and Ali, faster than both and had power in both hands. Cosell was very bias! He made sugar and Ali! I went into army and gave up boxing. It’s a horrible sport!
Cosel never learned to keep his big mouth shut. It made me dislike Leonard because of his one sided narration. He ruined the match for me before the first bell talking like Mayweather didn't stand a chance.
The only thing FM had going for him, was his def, which is how he got his wins, which is why Dundee changed SR’s fight strategy. Dundee had every respect for FM, as did ST
It was... The average 25 year old looked 2 times their age... Really just look at the professional athletes then and now and you will see what I'm talking about.... Nothing funny about that though a lot of people then shed blood and gave their life so you can live the way you do today 😊
I was 10 years old watching this... my dad and both my mums brothers were boxing fans so I got introduced to it in the great era of the 70s.. Ray leonard back then was something else,,
And the results were from refs not stopping fights when necessary I'm pretty sure there were times they were warned about stopping the fights too early...
So you’re an advocate for brain trauma then? Boxing isn’t good anymore bc dudes fight less often to avoid ending up like someone Roger Mayweather or Terry Norris or James Toney? Weirdo..
That left hook was beautiful at the end, you could barely see SR throw the right and SRL because he knew it was coming. What great fighters do. Punish you for any mistake.
Sr. was a tough out for even the best fighters of the century. He is a cool dude too. Glad to be on his team right Floyd? I'm your big big boy Cool with all the Mayweather folk here in LV.
Damn man!!! I know damn well Floyd definitely had a concussion after all these monster blows!!! I bet the farm that Sugar Ray left Floyd Daddy punch drunk after this fight for real y’all. Yo back in the days the referees use to let boxers literally beat the brains out a MF!!!
Round 8 showed why Mayweather didn't stand toe/toe and fight; he knew what would happen if he actually started fighting w/o moving or hugging. [edit]: too bad there wasn't a way to mute Cosell's terrible version of how this fight really played out.
I always felt that Floyd Sr was dealing with stamina issues during that period. He was just as fast as Leonard and had a record of 28 wins with 23 by knockout. Note how his use of the shoulder roll neutralized Leonard's attack in this bout.
I think you right their defense was pretty much the same they both very elusive but Sugar Ray was a little more potent on offense especially with the flurries to the body
Floyd Mayweather senior was no joke he was a hell of a good sugar Ray Leonard second to none I believe is best talent is when he's on his bicycle using his speed not fighting as a flat-footed fighter against Roberto Duran fort flat-footed and lost but the rematch was no mas speed sugar Ray Leonard along with sugar Ray Robinson to the fastest fighters of all time great fight I still say sugar Ray Leonard's best fighting comes when he moves and dances and avoids getting hit
True, Leonard was also dangerous if he had to fight. When Tommy was outboxing him, he resorted to fighting and caught Hearns with some great shots because Tommy was winning the boxing match which was unprecedented for Leonard who was best as a boxer with everyone else but a beast as well as a fighter.
Mr Floyd Mayweather Sr got the butter from the duck , but Ray Leonard's stamina couple with a few very powerful left hooks seemed to be the deciding factor , because unfortunately a great defense needs to be supported with a little offense at the end of the day. Leonard earned his money that particular night...
Same thing happened with Benitez, coulda gone the distance but being behind points with no chance to win by decision, Benitez tried to KO Leonard but got KOed himself.
Yo I don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks!!! How many people remember when Roberto Duran made a comeback and beat the shit out of Hector Macho Camacho ass??? I’m talking about Dude beat Camacho ass like a step child!!! And then them dirty ass judges gave it to Macho Time!!! That’s when I realized that boxing was all about the money!!! Saginaw in the House!!! Shout out to my Godfather - JACK CHANTACA
Believe me I bet that was Suger Ray hardest fighter, even though Duran whipped him the first time.. and Tommy was supposed to, but he did not have this type of heart or boxing skills, but Tommy will go down in history as a better fighter.love the hit Man but,he has the game pitbull, Mayweather Sr. I don't even know if Jr could have went through that, and been money Mayweather.
Mayweather senior fights better than Mayweather Jr at least Mayweather senior goes at the so far fight looks good up to the third round so far. The shorts that they wore back then was a lot better than what they were wearing no Mayweather Jr shorts they almost down to your knees. Looks ridiculous. Wow Mayweather senior is 24 years old
This is the first time I have ever seen Floyd Mayweather jr's father fight... Nothing to right home about here but he did teach his son well... Don't be like your dad son 😡
Love these old fights too, but the skinny legs kill me😂😂. Nowadays though our fighters are so bulked up that they run out of steam so quickly. Heaven help them if they still had to do 15 rounds like these guys. I'd still watch to see who does the best bambi legs dance😅
Hasta que Roberto duran le quitó toda la payasada..al gran Ray sugar leonard..que se burlaba del oponente..duran un gran boxeador panameño mi admiración para el..
THIS IS WHY A LOT OF FIGHTERS FROM THAT ERA OE PUNCH DRUNK NOW DAYS , HAVE BAD SPEECH AND SO MUCH MORE BUT BECUS THY TOOK A LOT OF PUNISHMENT BUT WOULDN'T QUICK AND THY WAS RIGHT BACK IN THE RING ... THIS IS WHY I NEVER DID KNOCK FLOYD JR FOR BEING SMART HE WATCH WHAT TAKING TO MUCH PUNISHMENT CAN DO TO A BOXER FIRST HAND SO U HAVE TO RESPECT FLOYD JR
Those were the years ! Legend ary icon Sugar Ray at it causing Un fair or bad weather for Fairweather, however it was a learning experience or situation for budding Fairweather then!
Those two guys were quick, strong , skilled, courageous, and in great shape. One had to give props to Floyd for trying so hard to not go down and fight back - wow. The only downside to this broadcast was Howard - very annoying, if not clueless.
I remember feeling real bad for Mayweather Sr after this fight, and even thought about Mayweather from time to time, while in the Army, because the beating this guy took. Little did i know he would have a son, who would grow up being one of the best.
