I think the only real competition it has for best knockout of all time is probably Julian Jackson KOing Herol Graham. There are a lot of great ones over the years for historical significance, brutality, pure devastation, artistry, technique, but for me those are the ones that have it all.

Hearn's had a deadly punch.. He probably hit harder than most heavyweights.. I doubt Hollyfield or Muhammad Ali could've knocked Duran out cold with a single blow like that.. I know its a moot point but just saying, size has very little to do with natural raw punching power..

One of the most devastating knockout victories of Hearns' career. Tommy's hands were fast as lightning and his punches were so powerful with the added leverage in that big height and reach advantage. He did to Duran what no one else had ever done.

I'm a huge fan of Tommy. He could bring it, and had a ton of class too. Look how well he took that Robbery in the 2nd SRL fight. How hard he could hit just shows how hard Hagler's head was. Tommy hit him so hard he broke that right on Hagler's melon, which had to be the difference in that fight of all fights. But on this Duran fight, not to take anything from Tommy but Duran just didn't look ready that night. A little on the lines of 'no mas'. And Tommy was a natural middleweight who could make super welterweight. Duran was really a lightweight who was still fine at welterweight. Him giving Hagler such a great fight at middleweight was amazing.

BBBYpsi I think both of u are wrong. Hagler is naturally a pressure fighter. He pushed on hearns so hard cause hearns doesn’t use his right effectively enough to beat a transitioning southpaw like hagler. Hearns sets everything off his left whereas hagler can start a combination with his off hand and jus transition to the opposite stance. Too lethal for a guy who sets everything up off one hand

At 154, Hearns was pretty much unbeatable. This version of Duran, with heavy feet, little movement, agility, and slow reflexes had no chance. Especially, coming off of a tough fight with Hagler, and a bad training camp, rapid weight cut, everything. It would of been interesting to have seen the Duran that showed up in Montreal for Sugar Ray Leonard against a welterweight Hearns. That night, Duran had crazy good defense, speed and reflexes against a lighting fast prime Leonard. His foot movement, ability to close the distance and upper body movement were something to see. Hearns was probably the worst matchup ever for Duran style wise. Even though, Duran had a lot of great moments after the first Leonard fight. You can basically split up his career in two parts just like Ali. Duran up to the first Leonard fight, and Duran after. Not even close. Props to Hearns. He got the job done. In another era, he would have been considered higher in the all-time pound for pound rankings. He was not only a great puncher, but had tremendous boxing skills. He gets a bad wrap for having a bad chin. He was only really stopped in three fights. Hagler and Leonard were probably top 15 all-time fighters who would not be denied on those nights, and Barkley who Hearns fought when he was a little past his prime. Don't forget all of the tough gym wars that he had at the Kronk Gym. Those take a big toll in the long run. We'll never know how rematches with Leonard at 154lbs. and Hagler with a different fight plan would have gone. I hope that someday Hearns gets the credit that he deserves for being one of the all-time best boxers.

I will never forget when I was 15 in 1985, and my Dad took me to see the Hitman fight in Saginaw, MI. He pummeled Fred Hutchings and won by TKO in the 3rd round. My Dad was a huge boxing fan, and had developed a habit of counting punches. Tommy hit this guy 62 times in the third round. It was a spectacular experience to see as a kid. Tommy became my hero that day. He was so awesome!!!!

Hearns was younger and fresher at 25 with only 2 fights since 23. The knockout punch was a thing of beauty. Duran was definitely a warrior but coming down from 190lbs to 154lbs at age 32/33 was to much when facing a future all time great. I love the respect the Hearns paid Duran throughout the fight by touching gloves before and after rounds.

@@al1410 I mean he's right. Leonard vs Duran 2 gave Duran an ass beating on the last 2 rounds before he quit (from the weight draining, to stomach cramps and his ego being hurt from the taunting by Leonard) and gotten the boxing lesson for 11 rounds in the 3rd fight. Even when he was at peak shape in middleweight against Hagler, he still came out short.

Well, no shortage of heart compared to a man on the street. But Duran’s “no mas” fight will forever associate him with a lack of heart. In this fight, heart had nothing to do with it. He couldn’t show heart or lack of it because he got bombed. The last punch was nuclear, but the two body shots causing the second knockdown were so violent. One of the most dominant, devastating championship fights ever.

There was just nothing Duran could do that night. Hearns at that point in his career, was just the worst type of matchup for Roberto. The thing about Hearns that I think gets overlooked a lot, is that he was a world-class boxer, who just so happened to have the heart and mentality of a brawler and one of the most devastating right hands in boxing history. Some fighters are just built to have other fighters numbers. If Hearns and Duran would’ve fought 10 times, Hearns probably would’ve beat him at least 7 out of those 10.

Deontay Wilder please watch this fight to see how the "Hitman" was able to disguise his righthand by going to the body and then faking his opponent into dropping his guard for an offensive opening. Everyone knew that Hearns wanted to land that shot but he knew how to deliver it with setups. See how Hearns purposely reset the action, using a quick stepback (see Steph Curry), even when he was able to land his shot, to establish the appropriate distance to avoid any BS check hooks or counters. HOWEVER, please ignore the legs of Hearns but definitely key in on his great cardiovascular conditioning. See how Hearns was able to unload a flurry of 4-7 quick and crisp combinations without gassing out and losing balance -- it is called roadwork!

Wilder is light years behind Hearns' boxing IQ. In order for him to get anywhere near that level he would have to start his career all over again and actually learn to box. Wilder is a one-dimensional, low-skilled, one-punch boxer with the IQ of a dodo bird. It's too late for him.
