Beginner's insights here: I started doing MAO last year of FL Studio, great software but I recently switched to Abelton and my creativity + ease of doing music skyrocketed I swear this DAW is the best. It's like Premiere Pro of music but it doesn't crash. Also, could you do a video with all the best shortcuts to use in Ableton??? I know so few of them.

I switched to Ableton after 10 years of using FL Studio. I have to admit that I always had a list of complaints about FL Studio even though I created great songs in it. I first got Ableton Live lite as part of a keyboard that I bought, but after testing it I totally fell in love with it. None of the issues in my list of complaints for FL Studio are in Ableton Live. I ended up buying Ableton Live Suite. I've had no regrets whatsoever.

The best shortcuts are the ones You find useful on Your own workflow. Chopping things up in Arrangement view is ctrl + e. Normalizing audio clip (done in arrangement view), ctrl +j = consolidate. This would show You the clip gain in - or + how much is it over or under 0 dB max peak. By resetting the gain by double clicking the valuebox to 0.. gives You the max peak to be 0 dBFS.

The best thing about Ableton is the automation. You click a knob on a plugin, it readies the automation lane of whatever knob you clicked. Cubase can't do that unless you turn a knob while recording.

yo, forreal though, I love that I never have to stress about losing save data from a project. All the weird plugins and M4L stuff I use means I get crashes at least once a session. Very underrated feature.

For audio post-production i've switched from Ableton to Reaper. It's really powerful, has all the features you've described and a tons more. For example, you can apply an FX chain per audio item and automate these FX and you still have the track FX chain. You've spectral editing integrated in the DAW. Comping is much deeper. You can make track templates, etc, etc.. Mad. MIDI isn't as straighforward tho so it really is best for audio editing and UX in Ableton is also much better. But it's good to use them both in my opinion.

I love Ableton Live, but it is my main DAW. I have used Cakewalk in the recent past, like a bit over a year ago, prior to learning Live. I used Reason, when it was under Propellerhead, way back when, and tried Ableton and Fruity Loops back then as well and never grasped any of them. Now days, they are all much better than they used to be. Ableton Live is my DAW now and I doubt I will change that, any time soon. Had an intro in 10 and quickly upgraded to 11 on the cheap and then finally did the full upgrade to Suite, with Max for Live and wow.

I wish ableton would buy out bitwig and they could take the best of both - combined into one daw. I currently use ableton the most but bitwig slowly keeps cutting into more and more of that time. Honestly though, I love FL Studio and I also love Serato Studio and then there is Alchemy and Drummer with Logic, so... I really do like all of them a lot. To me it comes down to what you're trying to do in the session and that determines which daw will bring out the best of the time spent

Ableton's workflow is essential to my living, I release 2 tracks a week and that's how I make my living from music. its all because I can import tracks from other projects with fx in tact, and all the time stretching is done for you before you even drag a sample in.

You're absolutely right. I used to use Cubase til i got properly introduced to Ableton 8 by my studio collaborator back then, and that was it. I've used Protools and Logic, even since Logic was called Notator. ..Cubase that's how f*ing old I am - lol. I remain on Live 9.7 cause it's the most stable version on my system, and it still beats anything else. So yeah, for what it's worth, I agree with you. I have had MANY conversations with protools heads -including my protools lecturer at uni-, and they all agreed, in private, Ableton is a much better system than PT, which is just an elitist trick these days. Cause it is. Your track at the end is awesome, whether it took a minute or not 👌 PS. If it was real, I'd marry Ableton too.

I’ve been using FL Studio for about 5 years now, and in that time, it has become an incredibly powerful workspace for producers. There’s only a handful of features that you’ve mentioned which FL Studio doesn’t have, like grid-highlight splicing and saving entire tracks with clips and effects, but personally, I can live without such features. It gets a lot of flack for its unintuitive layout, which is a reasonable complaint, but if you have the patience to learn where things are, it’s just as fluid of a workspace as Ableton. FL Studio’s patcher, mixer, and events editor are widely overlooked by people seeking a good DAW, yet it’s where I spent most of my time producing. My one big complaint about FL Studio is that it’s mixer is limited to 128 channels, which is just laughable. I think FL Studio is still missing a couple of features what would greatly enhance the workflow, such as macros than can be mapped to any parameter in the software. I will say, Ableton’s stock plug-in selection along with its effects rack appears far better than FL’s. It seems to come with far more tools for giving producers control over their sound. For this reason, I’ve considered saving up for Ableton, and that shit is expensive.

FL started out with a bad name from all the way back in the fruity loops days. Honestly at first it was a lot like Acid but not as powerful. But its come a hell of a long way since then, and has some features I actually like better than Ableton (piano roll comes to mind) I use Ableton, but if I absolutely had to change daws I would probably go bitwig, but FL would be a close second

FYI for any Logic users. You can do all of this in Logic besides the multiple warp modes and MPE. However, Bitwig is better than Ableton at both of those. Also the MIDI transformation tools, key-command customization, and screen sets are more robust in Logic than in Ableton

The Session view is what distinguishes Live from all the other DAWS. You consolidate material in Arrangement view, drag it into its respective column and then use the trigger functions to launch the other clips in the channel. When you like what you hear, record it back into the Arrangement. With regard to signal flow on a channel, what's great about Live is that between each device sitting on a given track, you can see a small amount of space that registers the signal output going into the next device to the right. This is extremely useful when you're using a lot of saturation and distortion. Unfortunately, these little gaps between devices disappear when you group them together.
@pnutbuttajellee1394
@pnutbuttajellee1394 Год назад
Nope. You must not have tried Bitwig? It does one thing better than Live: being able to have the arrangement and session view in one view or one or the other. It's an complaint I have seen from Live users. There is a lot they both have in common, but they both have pros and cons.

As a dual user of FL and Live, my only complaint is that Ableton doesn't seem to think I would want an easy way to return to the beginning of anything. Even the selection window at the bottom right doesn't serve that purpose without also adjusting the magnification of what I am looking at. This, and well... the built in sounds are kinda boring.

FL STUDIO GANG! My thing with Ableton is, nobody wants to remember a bunch of shortcuts. I just want to click to delete not presss five keys for a shortcut to delete. FL allow you to not think about shortcuts keys and focus on making beats. The thing I like about ableton is it's easier to work with audio clips, like you said. Some things that would require an extra step or two in FL like printing midi to audio is just quicker to do in Ableton. I bought Ableton's intro package and plan on getting the next tier after I purchase a few plugins I need.

Btw at the end you said it doesn't piss you off but while I was trying to get used to the piano roll and arrangement view of it, especially the two line under the playback pissed me off a lot. In note view, you have to choose how many bars it's gonna be before you write the notes and it's a blockage for intuitiveness, I mean the other features are extremely intuitive according to other daws but to write something you have to choose the area and hit ctrl+shift+m, if you write longer you have to fix the lenght of the clip inside note view, we should have been already allowed to keep writing imo but that's a sacrifice for dragging and multiplying feature, understandable but I don't find that practical. But I'll go for Ableton. I love it so much. It makes me enjoy making music really.

You don't have to adjust the length in a note view. Simply highlight more than the clip on the arranggement view or stretch it and hit CTRL J, this is gonna consolidate with extra time

@@Oversampled Thx I got it. What about there's no cutting tool like a razor in piano roll? How do you handle as a practical way of it? Also tbh so stupid that we are not allowed to choose/highlight multiple 'different' clips in arrangement view and also in fx chain...

I want Ableton to add macrosses and actions for certain tasks like Studio One has. For example, you need to make a quick double for a vocal, you press a certain key combination, the track is automatically copied, the pitch drops or rises - and voila, the dubble is ready. lots of time saved. Please Ableton!!!

This is extremely easy to do with any type of macro software. I have a Stream Deck set up with all sorts of macros. It's really nice because you can have physical buttons with custom icons that do any task you want. For example, I have a page full of all my favorite effects, where each of the physical buttons on the Stream Deck display a screenshot of the effect's UI. If I want to open Serum, I can see the actual Serum interface on the button, hit it, and voila, Serum opens up on the track I have selected. It would take about 15 seconds to set up a macro like you are talking about and it's a much more elegant solution than having to remember a convoluted key combination. That being said, you could easily install a macro software and achieve exactly what you're talking about. Many keyboards even have the ability to make key-combination macros exactly like that. Sure, it might be kind of nice for some people if Ableton had macros built in, but I personally wouldn't see a reason to use it since there are already super streamlined tools available now that are miles better than Studio One's macros. Edit: Also look into "Live Enhancement Suite".

One of the thing that I dislike is the difference between FLstudio where you have a couple of midi, and if you change one it applies to all the other clip in the arrangement. Ableton won't change the other midi, but just the one highlighted. In complex project you have to remember to copy paste manually this clip where it needs to be. This in FL results with less midi in total. While ableton you can comeup with lots of similar midi.

Would’ve been more helpful to say what keyboard shortcuts you were using.. Also when Ableton crashes, it doesn’t save unsaved VST settings so save VST settings or Ableton projects often

Huge downside of Ableton is you can't edit multiple clips simultaneously like editing the fades. You can't quickly replace drums through drag and drop like Cubase. I think the Manage Samples is a slow process.

it is. i dont think he knows cubase much, im using both and its a very stark contrast in work flows, live has a lot of unique features, he doesnt seem to be aware of, most of what he listed is in every other DAW.
