Wilderness Survival isn't bushcraft, or camping, nor is it long term wilderness living skills. True survival in the outdoors isn't expending a bunch of energy setting up a permanent home. It's set up shelter to protect from the elements with as little energy expenditure as possible and get out and back home to safety. In this video I show nine different minimalist easy to carry survival shelters. Copy them, or get ideas from them to suit your needs. #wildernessskills #wildernessskills

The only thing I would add is a pair of socks 🧦. Nothing like a dry pair of socks to sleep in. Several packs had room for a pair of socks and an energy bar. 💖🌞🌵😷

@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames 2 года назад
@@GeorgeOrwell-yz6zx, I bet you're right. But he did mention several times that in addition to one of these packs, you'd have a knife, canteen and possibly a ferro rod. ... Now that I'm thinking about it, I'd probably have a lunch in my hiking pack, but an extra energy bar for an unforseen breakfast would be nice. Oh! And maybe a single serve instant coffee would be such a comfort whilst being lost in the woods. ... He did have a down vest in one pack and don't forget the ponchos, so I'm sticking with the socks... even a thin pair to wear whilst you wash and dry your hiking socks... My boots are horrible without any socks. ... You could always keep your tent stakes in a sock instead of a draw string bag. ... You see, on a hike I can justify a survival pack as weight training. But I have a limit... The little yellow bug/snake proof tent, a poncho/tent fly, windshield screen, socks, protein bar and instant coffee. (Maybe a few bandaids in case my tent gets a hole)... That's what I'd be willing to carry in a survival pack. (I like the idea of a net hammock, but trees don't grow close enough here in sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Sending lots of love 💖. 😷

Thank you Dave, there was a lot of useful information to be taken from each of the shelters there to be put to use in anyone’s choice of survival kit. I appreciate the hard work you put in to both preparing, and filming this video. You should never worry how long a video is, because us fans will watch you happily all day long. Thanks for putting so much work into this video, lots of ideas on how to be better prepared. As a hiker I use to think I would be able to stick to the trail and never get lost. I detoured around a down tree in a very wooded area, lost sight of the trail, and got turned around. I spent about 20 minutes finding it again, I was humbled. You never know when you will need one of these.

Great video (as usual)! I enjoyed it immensely. In the Palmer Furnace segment, I believe you had a mobility scooter/chair cover. It looks similar to the cover I put over my wife's scooter. If it isn't, they would make excellent survival covers. You wouldn't be as crowded under one of those as you would be under a plastic garbage bag. Also the cost is between $16.00 to $30.00.

thats me. once i found a hammock and a hammock bug net i dont like the ground any more. get some spring clips, wally has them up to 4 inch. then go to a seconds type store and find a camo comforter. king size. i tie two corners at the foot end and two at the head end then clip the sides to the hammock net. leave the air pocket and it will take the cold well. i am not going to try snow but there is a big difference in holding heat and also keeping the wind from stealing your heat.

Yay! A new Dave video and a cup of coffee.. I hope the rest of the day measures up! .. one time the BF forgot the poles for the kids tent.. I put the whole dome tent up with all the ridiculous quantities of cord I always have 🤪.. it’s absolutely possible.. it looks absurd and it’s not ideal for big rain, but it’s doable! LOL I have the components for a super shelter in most all of my kits.. here in the northeast, it’s possible to get hypothermia most of the year, so it’s a good system to know and have the bones for at all times, and if it’s just enough for 1-2 people, it’s not a BULKY kit, especially if it’s brand new stuff, a new HD tarp in it’s package fits down the back of a hydration pouch perfectly and still fits the hydration bag, and a new plastic drop cloth and big survival blanket fit just about anywhere, add in a teeny bivvy bag and you’re in excellent shape. It all fits into a teeny bag, and leaves lots of space for the rest of the stuff you’re nuts to go without 🤪, a knife etc.. Awesome stuff as always Dave! Nice to hear Nick’s voice too! 😬😬 hope you’re doing well Hon!!

Wow. I see I can maybe drop some weight out of my kit. My own kit is in an old nylon Military butt pack on a 2" belt with canteen, tube tent, net hammock (more for camp chair than bed), trash bags, knife, fire kit, TP, etc., etc. In the woods or just hiking, where I go this simple kit goes, over my shoulder to the head or around my waist!! Ya just never know when "stuff" is gonna happen. Great info. Thanks.

There was so much information and excellent advice in this latest video that it could have been twice as long and just as interesting to watch. To me, these are the best type of your videos and I've learnt so much over the years from them. That shelter with the candle was something I'd never heard of before. @Dave, having spent many a weekend in hunting large tracts of flooded AR woods, I've been privy to many a tale of "lost hunter/miserable night!" After a couple seasons of listening, I equipped my bag with a few essentials, among which were water proof salt & pepper containers, and packets of soup, bouillon, instant coffee and etc.A mesh hammock & some heavy yard waste bags, took up minimal space, and completed the kit, as anything else needed was already on my person or in my bag! I never had to eat duck breasts grilled on a button willow fire, but I was d&€£3%d if I'd eat them saltless! My point is, a few carefully thought thru, comfort items can spell the difference between sheer hell, or an adventure you can laugh about a week later! Hi, Nick & happy trails to BOTH!

awww i get to finish out my work week with a Dave video! honestly i could listen to you and Nick all day while i work :) Lucky we live in NW Georgia, water EVERYWHERE... and so glad to see a shelter video. it's actually fairly cold here for many months and a good shelter and fire are essential.

When I'm in the woods or in the yard or forest on the property, I always have my small and big knife and my folding saw out there. My knives I use now are my Morakniv Companion and Schrade SCHF37. The folding saw is Silky F180, which fits in my pocket when closed up. These tools will let me make a debris shelter. This forest is mostly Pine and Spruce and I could use the branches with needles on them to make a bed on the ground or on a platform I make. There's plenty of bare branches and leaves around to cover shelter. We do have enough leafy trees that there's enough leaves on the ground to use. Still nice to have some form of tarp though for easy setup and keeping out rain.
@Reallybigmonkey1
@Reallybigmonkey1 2 года назад
You definitely sound prepared! When lost tired wet and hungry, a tarp is a jump ahead on shelter.

Hello Dave. This sure "cover"ed a lot. and yes that saying you said before bring things with more than one use, comes to mind :) What i really like about this is, there's options for everyone to consider, or even add in say get home bag. Ok Ok i admit , i was laying in bed watching this. Thanks for sharing all 9 with us , Nick , the spider and that big ant :) take CaRe

I enjoyed the variety. You definitely accomplished your goal of stimulating thought about the approach to the subject. And I don’t get tired of hearing you explain. In fact, I wish you’d work in more stories about your camping days with your mentors and other unique experiences like “The Mystery of John’s Mountain.” I think I’ve listened to that one at least 8 times. Thanks for the content.

My experience has been that I needed to cut two saplings and force them into the ground near the most promising rooted sapling in order to make that frame. The trick then becomes the best way to interweave the suppled tops well enough to bind them in windy conditions.

30:28 the things I like about this little tent is the color... If I'm looking to be found, I want a color other than green or brown. The other is that it's bug and snake proof... Especially when you put the zippers at the top. So maybe my poncho shouldn't be camouflaged either, if I want to be found. Throw in a dry pair of socks and a protein bar and I'm a happy camper! 💖🌞🌵😷

Hello Dave and Nick😎 I gave up on tents. I have a DD hammock, bug net, Tarp shelter system. If I found myself without trees to tie to I would set it up as diamond shelter and sleep on the hammock. and 2 canteen/cook kits and my other ten Cs with food I can stay out for a week. with a fishin hole Im set😊
