Cycling is as cheap or expensive as you make it. I commute on an old claud butler hybrid I bought from a local auction for £26, in a £15 jersey and £10 shorts. It’s been perfect, everything works and it even had new mtb stem and handlebars, as well as a pair of new schwalbe marathon plus tyres. Had a fantastic ride both ways today.

I think a major way to save lots of money in the long run is to become your own bike mechanic. If you can fix anything and everything on your bike, you will never need to pay another person for it. Tools are expensive, yes. But a surprising amount of maintenance can be performed with a set of hex keys and maybe some torx bits. And those obviously have applications beyond just bicycle maintenance. Plus, many of the more specific tools cost as much as paying a bike shop to use them once or maybe twice. Obviously I don't think bike mechanics shouldn't ever have customers but often doing things yourself will save astronomical amounts of money. It's like cooking. You should really do it yourself most of the time. Relatively few can afford to eat out every day.
@jamesmckenzie3532
@jamesmckenzie3532 10 месяцев назад
Don't forget that you need to get adequate tools. Don't buy cheap. In the U.S. Harbor Freight sells tools at great prices that are a good as the high end tools. Only buy bicycle specific tools from places like Park Tools (and you'll only have to buy once).
@zeemon9623
@zeemon9623 10 месяцев назад
@@jamesmckenzie3532 I did mention that tools are expensive but I mostly agree with your more specific statement. Adding to that, there is always the second hand market where you can buy quality tools for relatively cheap. And there are some tools that do the job well enough even if they are cheap. My bike stand was like $25 new. It's not an enormous amount of fun to use but it holds my bike up without any danger of tipping over or scratching it. I'd say the polar opposite here are torque wrenches. They are precision tools and precision has its price. The cheaper ones are more likely to be off by a significant margin. You might genuinely be better off guesstimating. To reiterate my point though: Often buying something from Park Tool once is likely the same cost as having a bike mechanic use it once. You pay for the service and the experience. If you can spend some time working on your bike, you'll save money.

@joules531
@joules531 10 месяцев назад
I ride a steel framed single speed. Chainrings, chains and sprockets last 10,000 miles, the frame will probably last longer than me, and it’s super fast. Campag parts are still super smooth despite being over forty years old, and that includes headset and pedals, which have done at least 150,000 miles without ever being stripped down. Maintenance costs are basically non existent, other than the occasional tyre or tube. Some good tips in your video, but I’m pretty sure that your bikes need quite a lot of expensive maintenance. If you really want to save money, it’s worth considering switching to a vintage steel framed single speed, made in an era where top components are made to last a very long time indeed.

Here in the States, old bikes can be had for pennies on the dollar and are often barely used. As a side benefit replacement components may be cheaper as well as long as they're not so out-of-date as to have fallen out of stock.

I would suggest learning how you maintain/repair your bike. - change the inner tube/tires by yourself - check and pump up to the correct pressure before the ride - prepare spare inner tubes and a mini pump for your adventure - learn to replace cables - listen to your bike when riding. Strange, new sounds spell trouble. There are constant sales for everything, from parts, accessories, clothing, and even helmets and shoes. I built my bike myself, learning and saving big on my way! -

Something I learned early on: buy cheap, buy twice. If you really want to upgrade to something of better quality but is more expensive, just save the money until you are able to buy it. Don't be tempted to buy something cheaper and use it for the meantime. It won't be as fun, and it will cost you more. Also, don't buy something with the assumption that you will be able to sell it later on.

One way to save money, is instead of paying through the nose to enter Grand Fondos, find clubs that put on old fashioned "Century" rides. In the US, Fondos cost over $100, while "Century" rides cost $25 to $30. (Not sure if they still have them in the UK) Both supply food and water rest stops, but Century rides are not Timed "events". Buy used. Especially if you are handy. A quality bike several yrs old and collecting dust can be had for half the price or less. Spend a bit of time getting it lubed up and some fresh tires and you are way ahead of the game. Unless you are an age group winner with a stopwatch, you won't notice the performance difference. Also upgrading wheels and tires on a quality used bike gains a big performance jump. An upgraded frame only saves you a pound or two. Again normal people won't notice the weight, especially if you have a few to lose yourself. 8-) PS Did a tri last weekend and racked up next to a 50 ish guy with a 15 yr old Ridley, no upgrades. He won his age group. Quality used bikes still perform on high levels. You can save money for coaching.

Good tips. Though: @4:44 don't fall for their advertisement here - you DO NOT need to buy lubes like that. You can make your own for WAYYYYY less money. Either traditional oil type lube (25% motor oil and 75% minteral spirits -- though you may want to play around with using a mix of more spirits for cleaning and then perhaps a heavier lube (with more oil or perhaps some gear oil)). Or - for waxing - note that using plain parafin wax, which you could buy in bulk cheap, gives a more efficient chain than any and every type of oil based lubes - nearly all the benefit that you'd get from commercial wax lube products with special metals in them, but for way less money. Having some really cheap materials to clean and lube your chain will help encourage you to clean if often. If you wax and do it well, your chain might last 5x more km of riding than most people would get with common lubing and cleaning methods.

I`ve never understood why people go out,and,buy $10,000+ bicycles.With that amount of money you could put a deposit on a house,buy a car,or go on a holiday etc,etc.Having an expensive bike brings many problems,especially if it`s stolen,or components break down.Apppreciate your 9 money saving tips though.Keep up the good work GCN. 👍🚴🚴‍♂🚴‍♀

Well, in the case of chain I found out that financially its better for me to change chain with a cassette at the same time once a year... Like really I ride 7-8 000 km per year on my trek bike last 3 years and in the meantime I should change my chain at least 4, better 5 times per year. But If I sum the price of these 5 chains, it actually cost more than just one chain and one cassette... :D So I am changing these just once per year and I have no problem what so ever (financially and not even mechanical- technical problems). Although my chain is quite stretched after these months and thousands of kilometres of riding, chain haven´t been dropping or snapping for 2 years, So I have not problem with that :)

Waxing = great. However, using pretty much any Silca product = the anti-money saver. Almost any wax works fine - I even melted some unwanted scented candles into the crockpot - my chain worked just as well

Only one of these tips really make sense: Take care of your chain. Failure to do this can be quite expensive. A new chain costs anout USD 50, a new cassette about USD 150. You don't need to wax your chain, but you need to keep it clean and lubed. Replace when worn (and you don't need a 50 USD chain checker, a 99 cent wooden or steel, one foot ruler will do). Keeping up on chain maintenance will save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, Euros, or Pounds. Also, keep up on the other side, brakes will save money too.

A good SRAM chain is considerably less than $50 as long as you steer clear of hollow pins and similar baloney.

A bit hypocritical of my experience, but I'm sure I'm not the worst - Trust what you have and use it to the utmost, instead of thinking that you need an expensive "marginal gain" piece of kit to improve your riding, and pinning all hope for a better experience only on the next parcel in the mail. Bling may not obviously be a primary motivation, but with the amount of cycle gear packaging I've gone through, it's still subconsciously, insidiously there.

Save by getting a "bikefit" at 300 £ ?? Or measure up a bike you know and feel comfortable with and transfer the measurements to a new bike.? And maybe find a dealer with demo saddles to find a new/better one. How did people ever get out riding, before the bikefitting business was invented ?
@main_stream_media_is_a_joke
@main_stream_media_is_a_joke 10 месяцев назад
300+ $ "bike fit" is for loosers. It's either got to be 1000$ at least for a "proper" fit or go home. Seriously wtf falls for these bike fit nonsense? Its like people have just stopped using sense and just depend on "experts" for things that our parents knew without the need for these dubious "experts".

@@main_stream_media_is_a_joke Next thing will be to take a course before you ever go riding. No matter what you want to start nowadays, you have to have a course. I wonder how the first instructors learned THEIR skills? 😮

"Bike fit" prior to purchase is merely a means to get around the fundamental flaws associated with bike sizing by the manufacturers and lack of effort by many local bike shops in assuring that their customer is getting a bike aligned with their individual geometry, flexibility, and fitness at time of purchase. Rider height and "Crotch over top bar" may be a starting point, but doesn't do much good if the rider can't comfortably reach the hoods and controls, let alone the drops. Under current conditions, I can understand the "need" for a "bike fit" prior to purchase, particularly to protect one's investment, but it is largely to overcome shortcomings in the overall bike industry.

Do A LOT of research before buying an ebike. Recommend you buy an ebike from a company that has been in the bike industry for decades. Beware buying online, sight-unseen can bring a bunch of problems. Problems we've encountered in the bike shop: a) buying online can make it difficult to contact the manufacturer if there is an issue that is not a standard bike-repair issue (lights don't work, LCD console doesn't work, etc). You're buying a bike to ride it, not so it sits in the shop waiting for the manufacturer to send a replacement part. b) it's tough for your LBS to change a tube on a fat-a** tire if the wheel is a heavy steel wheel that can't be completely removed from the frame (a rear-hub drive ebike that doesn't have a removable/detachable cord from the battery to the hub) c) folding a 50+ pound ebike isn't easy, regardless of what the advertising shows d) when you buy a known brand from a LBS, the techs there have been trained to work on those bikes and parts are generally available quickly.

IT'S SIMPLE: Buy used, don't buy cycling specific nutrition, don't buy cycling specific clothing, don't pay to race(or pay the winner), don't take airplanes and use hotels to go on "epic" rides. If you want to not spend money but want the same experience as someone who does you should get real, some people actually work and sacrifice for what they have not just tack it on top like you think.

A pair of shorts and a jersey can be very cheap and transform both comfort and speed on the bike, well worth the very small investment.

@@PhilOsGarage lol, I did a TT in rolled up pants and a t shirt, unofficially voted best kit by the organizers, I wasn't going for a win, but yeah at some point if your looking to be competitive or comfortable using certain saddles I agree, but on the flip side if your complaining about spending or how expensive cycling is they are 100% unnecessary.

Don't be cheap and buy the best bike that fits you best and you can afford the first time around. Bikes depreciate fast. Upgrading components individually at a later time will cost way more than buying a good complete bike from the get go. Buy stuff off-season when on sale. End of August is when new model bikes are announced and old ones go on sale. Better yet buy barely used bikes. I scored a $10K 22lbs full carbon XTR MTB Santa Cruz with reserve wheels for $4K. Buy extra tires, tubes, chain, cassette, pads any other wear&tear items on sale. Be one step behind the latest 12 spd 13 spd etc. That 10 or 11spd on sale does the same job and maor disount and shifts better. Just scored some new MTB shoes 50% off and looking to buy spare tires and chains for next season.
