9 is a 2009 computer-animated post-apocalyptic action film directed by Shane Acker, written by Pamela Pettler and produced by Jim Lemley, Tim Burton, Timur Bekmambetov and Dana Ginsburg. The film stars the voice of Elijah Wood as a small ragdoll-like robot who awakens shortly after the end of mankind, and must find eight other robots to figure out the mystery behind humanity's destruction while tangling with the vicious creations of a massive soul-stealing machine, alongside other voices of John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover with Martin Landau and Fred Tatasciore.

credit if you think this movie is deep now you should check out the theorizer video about this movie. he goes into more details and when this movie came out it had a. Facebook account where it regularly updated and explained more of the movie. where you can actually talk to the scientist who created the machine and created the rag dolls. but unfortunately the Facebook account has gotten silent for a couple of years but you can still go back and read the post.

My favorite visual detail of the film is how you can see how the scientist improved his craftsmanship over time, as the dolls become better-made with each new addition. 1 is the crudest, being loosely held together with clumsy stitching and buckles. 2 is a shoe, and 3 and 4 are a pair of gardening gloves. You get the idea he didn't know how to sew, and was roughly cobbling the dolls together from what he had lying around the house. But as he goes on, he improves his skill. 9, being the newest, is the most well-put-together, with a body that seems custom-stitched from burlap cloth, and hands and feet made of carved wood and molded copper. Even the apertures of their eyes become more more smooth and circular, which is why 1 is always squinting, making him look even more like a bitter old man. The varying crudeness of their designs is reflected in their personality, so it helps both to make the world and lore more fleshed-out, and to subtly further the themes and character arcs.

13:17 You missed the detail when the Scientist is taken away from the Machine by the soldiers. The machine reaches out to him and freaks out like a kid being separated from their parent. The Machine was given free will and ability to think for itself, when it was treated like a mindless tool of war, it decided to wipe out humans because it believed they were cruel and not worthy of life. Then it wiped out everything else because of the pain it went through. They don't show all of it in the movie, but the details are there.

I thought the “seamstress” (The name of the machine )not having a personality was the point I always interpreted it as the machine got the scientist mind and intellect but not a soul/personality so when it realized what the nine dolls were it wanted to absorb them to essentially become a whole being/person

@@tristanmccann6838 i like to think of it as he was doing it more as a way to quell any possible sources of insubordinations, especially since 7 left them, taking 3 and 4 with her. 2, 5, 6 and 8 were left with 1, as they looked to someone for guidance, which was 1 at the moment. Knowing that 2 would go out and possibly learn more than he should, 1 would let him do so, knowing that he would have no problem letting any of the machines take 2, disguising it as 2 being 'old and weak', despite being the first, and therefor, oldest stitchpunk of the group. And let's be honest, 5 was too naive to go against 1, 6 was left to his ramblings, and 8 was just intimidation factor at most for 1, to enforce his rule, since the magnet scene clearly showed he wasn't all there upstairs.

Have you noticed though that 1 may be the ONLY one of the ragdolls who displays mostly negative emotions? Like maybe he's the one to hold of all of the scientists bad traits; his ego, cowardice and self-righteousness. Those seem like the kind of negative traits all people have. With that in mind, it's all the more interesting that HE'S the only one to develop as the story went. MAYBE the subtle message is that within your soul, the only thing you should change about it is replace all your bad sides.

Critic, for you to know: in Russian special version (with oartly different text and montage) the dolls are not the part of the scientict soul. Instead only 9 represents the scientist, 7 is his wife, 3 and 4 - their kids. And 1 - is the leader of the regime.

Well the reason why the main antagonist of this film doesn't really have a personality is because is supposed to represent a human brain but without any emotion, without any soul. I think that is the strict interpretation but I also believe there is a bit of a secondary narrative in there as well. If you notice, when the scientist is developing it it doesn't have any of the spikes on its core, its much smaller, and it seems distressed (or at least, confused) when the scientist is dragged out. This implies that the machine had the potential to be good but due to the General pulling the scientist out of the project early and forging it into a militaristic AI, it became resentful to humanity. This theme also fits with the name of the movie, which was (as I understand it) because on a scale of 1-10 no-one is perfect, so a 9 is the best you can shoot for (ie : inherent flaws of humanity) , the fact that most of Stitchpunks are lead by fear (ie : on of the inherent flaws of humanity) , and of course, if that theory is true, it would mean that humanities own hatred and drive for war was what created the thing which killed all life, which is the ultimate way of depicting, the inherent flaws of humanity. To me at least, the movie was never really one where you watched it for what it was directly, but more one where you looked at everything it represented as it has several of these small dots of evidence that all lead to different messages throughout it. (you could also make the interpretation that the Stitchpunks like 2, 7, and 9 who fought against the idea of fear being a driving factor indicate that despite the flaws of humanity being great, there would always be some portion of it which remains good.)

@@blackout295 Well, according to the creators, the main reason was that in Russia there was Orthodox Christianity, and the concept of the soul between Catholics and them differs. "the soul was treated dryly there." We also love internal monologues and a voiceover that explains everything. And if in short they changed, changed the message with the soul, gave names to the dolls and the fact that they represent a person from the past of the scientist, there was a lot of voice-over, reflections of the ninth. I'm not sure I agree. 7 and 8 are very much action-focused individuals, with 8 being almost mute through most of the film, as the dumb muscle. Furthermore, when the others are determined to take action and destroy the Machine, it's 9 who goes back to the Scientist's house to learn more about who they are and where they come from. I think it's more elegant to say that 9 represents to see from and shift between multiple perspectives. While the others see things through the lens of their own rigid personality traits, 9 can see the value in each of them, and thus can more effectively bring them together and lead them more effectively. Not just actions over words, but knowing when best to use one or the other.

Oddly enough there was a plan for a sequel as the old social media accounts for them did become active once more with an Ominous message about the Scientist now seeking the remainder of the parts of his soul, as if those sections of the soul that produced the lifegiving rains had resurrected the scientist in some manner. Also as for 9 putting in the piece that awakens the machines, it is the last of the scientist’s soul. His will, his desires, that desire to reunite all his fragments in the machine and become one again.

However, the film was missing 'that extra something' that kept it from being a classic I wanted to watch yearly. I would say its the story. The fandom's made a ton of fanart, fanfiction and even a bunch of their own Stitchpunks (what the dolls are called) and backstories of them. I even made one of my own - 725, who I based on my favorite old actor, Peter Lorre (since the film is supposed to take place in-between the two World Wars, and Lorre was very active as an actor at the time). He's one of the most cherished characters I made and a lot of people in the 9 fandom remember him. I've unfortunately fallen out of the fandom as did many others, and we're all just sort of scattered about in the wide world of the Internet. 2019 was the film's 10th anniversary and I was hoping something would come from that, but aside from an odd post on the film's Facebook account, nothing ever did.

This was my: "I'm gonna be brave" movie. I was super hyped when I saw the ads, so I went to see it on 9/9/09. So it holds an important place in my heart. 1 is the best character, by far, as he does have that little bit of character growth near the end.

oh my god this movie... honestly despite its flaws, this movie.. This movie was honestly one of my favorites as a kid. It still is one of my favorite movies. Just as a visual piece of countless small details that build up. It's just so intriguing, such an interesting story.

While this ins't the best movie ever, I think the visuals and the unique storytelling are easily worth it. I remember that first trailer I saw, featuring this epic metal theme with violins roaring with the cool post-apocalyptic landscape in the background, and the scientist saying, "Nine... you... shall protect the future..!" So cool. The designs are cool, the voice cast is fantastic (and really give more character to the dolls even if the story doesn't give it to them), and the themes and visuals are really interesting. Back in the day, there was nothing like it. Now, I like to think it inspired people to make their own cool dark visually interestings shorts and films, just like it did to me. They wanted the movie to be made with stop motion animation originally, but the cost of production made it impossible with their budget, and so they decided to make it CGI. Shane (the director) supposedly wanted a sequel made, but nothing has come of it yet. Hopefully one day, he can do another one. Or a series, maybe that would be even better. Neca made a few figures from the movie, I always wanted that 9, was never able to get it.

9 is honestly one of my fondest movies as a kid. Watched it many times and was always entranced by the world as a child. It's a damn shame we haven't seen a sequel in the recent years with the advancements of animation and cgi. This movie redone in 2021 would be amazing.

I feel like this whole movie is a big experiment, and im ok with that. The movie definitely doesn't really know what it is. Apparently black magic and robotic's can co-exist? I feel like with that a few human's left alive would have added a lot to the story.

Doug, I just wanted to say that you and your team are God's gift to humanity. There's so many obnoxious RU-vidrs out there who beg for likes and "smashing that bell" who end their videos with a minute long thank-you to all their patreon supporters. You on the other hand, provide quality and thought-provoking content that ends with bringing attention to a charity that absolutely deserves it. You are an amazing person who really is making this world a better place. I admire your character. Thank you! 👌

Another aspect of the movie that deserves talking about is its origins. This movie is based off of a short video that was essentially 9 outsmarting and defeating the rat robot Indian in him doing the ceremony that showed all the others and spirits meaning that he was the last survivor. The short video got the attention of Hollywood and I don’t know if it was that the person who created it got a job, or they just bought the rights to that short video to make into a movie.

I was a really sheltered kid growing up. One day my parents were out and this popped up on hbo. I saw the rating and went "well they aren't home. It's animated. I'll check it out" so I sat down and watched it. It was the first movie to ever make me really think. It showed me the possibilities and stories films could tell. So 9 is a very special movie to me. Still is.
