Its just such an absurd car, ya can't help but love it. Weighed nearly double, twice the size and three times the engine displacement of its competition...the spec sheet is like a madman's diary. 428hp, 3600+lbs and 200+mph top speed. Flying in the face of all conventional racing practices at the time, the car placed 2nd overall at the 1971 Le Mans before being unceremoniously sold off to Matra, where it spent the remainder of its days testing aircraft landing gear at 200mph. Truly one of my favourite cars of all time 😆

Take another look at that Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spider ... then ask yourself how many of those lines Jaguar "borrowed" to make the E-type 9 years later. I think you'll find there's rather more than coincidental commonality there. :)

I love the citroen 2CV, but I like it by its more common nicknames of "Deux Chevaux" (Two Horses, in reference to the 2 cylinder engine) and Tin Snail (A reference to its curved shape, and its top speed) Well done, VisioRacer!

Not at all. The 2CV is called "deux chevaux" thanks to the french taxation system, because the car had "deux chevaux fiscaux" or "two tax horsepower". "CV" stands for : chevaux fiscaux.

Hey VisioRacer, another very nice video!!! Here are some nicknames given here in Greece in some cars: Citroen ID/DS: The frog (ο βάτραχος in greek) BMW 635CSL E24: The batmobile Mazda RX7 FD3S: The Batman or the Bat (η νυχτερίδα in greek) Hyundai Coupe/Tuscani/Tiburon: Here there have been some different nicknames, according to the generation: -First Gen (RD): The Viper (due to the shape of the lights that look like Dodge Viper) -Second Gen (RD2): The peacock (το παγώνι in greek, due to a commercial, in which it opened a peacock tail in the end) -Third Gen (GK): The Shark (ο καρχαρίας in greek, due to the air vents on the front fenders, that look like the shark's gills) Also for the S Coupe there was a nickname: The estate agent (ο μεσίτης in greek, because it wasn't good in turns, and usually it was finished inside some fields). Ford Sierra/Escort Cosworth liftback: The Wing (η φτερούγα in greek, due to the large back air spoiler). VW beetle 1302: Apart from bug, beetle and so many names, here in Greece we called it a small cockroach (το κατσαριδάκι in greek) due to the translation of the titles of the Disney's bug movies. I will mention also some trucks!!!

Mercedes w201 is called in Finland as "tenavatähti" which literally means "childstar". Ford Transit is Transu, as in transvestite. Skodas are often called as skodillacs or skeida -> which means crap. Datsun 100A is known as 100 ampeerininen ->100 amps. Most of these are old nicknames, but some people still use them.

It translated literally to flying disc, which refers to UFOs of the alien type (UFO is anything that flies that we dont know what it is exactly) so its english counterpart is closer to flying saucer than to UFO, UFO's spanish counterpart is OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado)

Omar Yes, in Italian the exact counterpart for UFO is *Oggetto Volante Non Identificato*, but, especially before we started adopting english words, *Disco Volante* was the standard thing to yell if you saw something strange flying across the sky.

A friend of mines Dad drove a flat front semi truck from Alaska down to the lower 48 states and back, through Canada, as per his route. The bugs were so bad in the summer he had scrubbed the paint down to the primer from the frequent cleanings. Truck was dubbed "The Bug Slayer!"

Of course, the Chaparral 2J wasn't the only car to use fans to increase ground effect. The Brabham BT46C (or BT47, depending upon who you talk to), was a Formula 1 racing car with a large fan at the rear, designed for the same ground effect trick as the Chaparral 2J. But because of the intricacies of Formula 1 regulations (the rule book even then ran to a couple of thousand pages), Brabham had to sneak it in by introducing the fan as purportedly constituting an engine cooling device. Which, of course it was, courtesy of sucking huge quantities of air from under the car past the engine. But it also produced hilariously huge amounts of downforce, allowing the car to corner at previously impossible speeds. Needless to say, the moment the wraps came off this car at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, the other rival teams reacted entirely predictably, upon working out what that fan was actually doing. It didn't take long for the F1 regulators to close the loophole Brabham were exploiting, and fan cars were banned from Formula 1 from that point on. Though the test notes from Niki Lauda point to a problem with this sort of ground effect technology. He noted during testing that the car could deliver enormous lateral g-forces, at a level that F1 drivers had never experienced before. He warned that drivers would risk becoming unable to drive through exhaustion, if subjected to such forces throughout a 2-hour race. As a consequence, a thoroughgoing implementation of ground effect of this sort, constitutes a step too far with respect to the physiology of human drivers. Which is one reason why no one has tried it elsewhere - the car would, quite literally, be lethally quick. Even though the two cars above didn't reach the point of inducing internal haemorrhaging in the driver, it wouldn't take long to reach power outputs that made that risk a reality. But the point to take home here, is that you won't stop someone being ingenious enough to come up with an idea to stuff rivals in a competition. Both the Chaparral 2J and the Brabham "Fan Car" are classic examples of this principle in action.

A few favorites that didn't make the list include... The Pink Pig - Porsche 917 with a bulbous body that was designed by an aerodynamicist. The paint people painted the body pink and marked it with a butcher's diagram. The race team liked it so much they raced it like this. Midnight - NASCAR racer Rusty Wallace drove a black race car, and the chassis he preferred to race he named Midnight. Yellow Banana - Junior Johnson fielded a Ford Galaxie in NASCAR with a radically altered body. The car sloped down at the front and featured a rakish windshield, yet was deemed legal. It was painted yellow, and competitors named it the Yellow Banana. Interceptor - The black Ford Falcon XB GT with the modified nose in the original Mad Max wasn't actually called Interceptor until Mad Max 2, but it's a serious badass of a car all the same. Tin Lizzy - The nickname for the Ford Model T. Whooshmobile - The nickname given to the Paxton STP turbine Indy car raced in 1967 due to its sound. Since Dodge introduced the 800 hp Demon, tuner Hennessey has introduced a 1,000 version of the Chevy Camaro called The Exorcist. That might be even better than De Tomaso naming their Cobra rival Mangusta (Mongoose).

Volvo Valp. Valp is Swedish for puppy. It was a 70s 4x4/6x6 military truck also available to civilians. The little puppy completely obliterated any form of opposition like Land Rover, Range Rover etc, according to a 1972 magazine of my collection.

There's a couple more that could have been there, the 1969 Ford XW Falcon GT was called the "Super Roo" because of the cartoon Kangaroo on the front guards and the 1971 XY Falcon GT was called the "Shaker" because of aircleaner sticking out of the bonnet. and the 1996 Holden HSV GTS-R Commodore was nicknamed the Big Banana due to the only colour it came in.... bright yellow.

Visio, the Godzilla name came from the GTR developed in Australia for the local tin top series as it was self developed by the local race and then dominated as well as producing more power than the race car in Japan it was based upon.

One small detail - the 1970 Chaparrel J2 was generally known as the "Sucker Car"...while the "Fan Car" is usually considered the 1978 Brabham BT46 Formula one car. Overall, another great video - keep them coming! :-)

In the sixties, Simca cars were sold in Brazil, and they started with the Chambord model equipped with a V8 engine who had just 84 hp. This car was nicknamed here as "Belo Antônio" (Il Bell'Antonio, or Handsome Antonio, a contemporary Italian movie), which showed a man who seemed to be the perfect lover by the looks, but could do nothing at the bed. In syria they call the 2002 mercedes benz E55 AMG "The ghost" due to that they were mostly imported in gray or silver and of course due to its strong accelration and high top speed

In Finland Citroen 2cv is called "rättisitikka" which means ragcitroen becouse of its roof. Also "sätkä" is being used

Now, in trucks, we have 4 specified nicknames for 3 of them: Chevrolet C15A/Ford F60L: - In civilian use, their nickname was The Carnaval (ο Καρνάβαλος in Greek, unknown why). -The same trucks in the army, got the nickname "The Canadian woman" (η Καναδέζα in Greek, and there's a big and beautiful story behind this name. The same name is given also today in all 3/4 ton or slightly larger, small trucks in Greek Army). Mercedes Benz Short Bonnet Trucks (Kurzhauber im Deutsch): Their international nickname was Bullnose, but in Greece we called them "a fenale pig" (η γουρούνα in greek/Damn!!! another pig in Merc family??? hehe!!) Volvo FH models from 2002 to today: The Chinese Man (ο Κινέζος in greek). It is said that this nick was given due to the shape of the lights. Personally I find this nick very deceptive, because chinese industry is known for low quality... That is far away lower than Volvo's quality.

if you watch carefully when the chapparral leaves the goodwood start line near the end of the video, when he spins up the fans you can see the whole car shrink downwards slightly

Oscar Thorpe ...Well, I guess my screen is too small to visualize the car being pulled downward by the fans. I did notice what looked to me to be the weight transfer of acceleration, causing the body to dip at the rear. I was surprised to learn that the fans had their own engines, two stroke at that. The engineering to coordinate all that, along with the fuel management, had to be phenomenal. Can Am racing brought out some incredible innovations. In my opinion, it should have been a no holds barred racing series, even with Porsche's dominance. I believe other builders would figure out how to get ahead.

I believe Aussies called the R32 GTR Godzilla because it was a monster from Japan that was devastating in the Australian touring car championship. Your notes referenced Japanese touring cars, I dont think that's a series Australian wheels magazine followed
