How to understand you eat too much salt? Eating too much salt is very dangerous for your health. How much is too much? We’ll answer this tricky question and show you the 9 clear signs that you need to quit salt immediately.
HISTORY OF SALT
Salt has been an essential element of human and animal diet for centuries. Salt served as a currency in many countries, and people literally got into fights over it. In the Middle Ages, it was sometimes called “white gold” because it was incredibly expensive. Salt has been such an important part of life it has a big place in literature and culture of many nations. It is still a tradition to greet guests with bread and salt in many countries. Some popular cities would not be what they are without salt. Venice, for example, became economically developed thanks to its salt monopoly. Salzburg, which we know as the city of Mozart and “The Sound of Music” translates from German as “salt castle.” There, salt mines were turned into tourist attractions.

SUMMARY: How much salt is too much?
Americans have almost 3,400 milligrams of sodium every day. And, it's more than double the optimal amount!
According to the American Heart Association, 1,500 milligrams of sodium is your healthy limit. That's 0.75 teaspoons of salt. That does not sound like a lot, but we have faith you can be strong and limit your salt consumption to this number.

If you eat too much salt, the extra water stored in your body raises your blood pressure. So, the more salt you eat, the higher your blood pressure. The higher your blood pressure, the greater the strain on your heart, arteries, kidneys and brain. This can lead to heart attacks, strokes, dementia and kidney disease.

One thing to watch if reducing your salt consumption is iodine levels. Iodine is rare in the common diet and you really need to watch it. For many, about the only source of iodine is iodised salt. So yes, reduce your sodium intake, if it is too high, but watch your iodine intake. You only need small amounts but it is essential.

Never explained how a craving for junk food means you eating too much salt when really the craving can be explained by salt deficiency. The human body has an amazing ability to self regulate by making you crave salt when you need it and remove it using the kidneys when here’s too much. In study’s men were able to urinate 86 grams of salt in a day

The importance of salt long time ago was not because of high consumption. It was because salt was used a lot to preserve foods (no refrigerators!). I once lived in an old house and there was a specially crafted brick container in the basement. People back then used it to stack meat in it between layers of salt. And they rinced the meat before use.

@renge9909
@renge9909 6 лет назад
Excess consumption of either is the only 'enemy' there is. You're talking about 150 years ago. What was the average meal composed of? How frequent was the consumption of meat, salted or otherwise? What else did they eat? What was the difference between the well off and poor, diet-wise? What was the activity level? What was the mortality rate? What were the common chronic conditions afflicting these people? So many different factors and variables are present.

@smitajky
@smitajky 5 лет назад
I went on low sodium 40 years ago. It is the CHANGE that has to be properly managed. It took 4 years to gradually reduce the salt intake. It is impossible to imagine a person not getting sufficient salt per se. But if the kidneys have been used to excreting the excess salt and you suddenly stop then you can easily run to salt deficient. As I said, I don't use salt but even then I look at my foodstuffs and I still reach recommended levels easily without adding any salt to anything ever.
@charisholisticcenter
@charisholisticcenter 5 лет назад
My father died, because of his salt use. It held fluid in his bloodstream and his bloodstream was so waterlogged...the heart could not pump the blood. His heart was starved for nutrients. His weight would fluctuate over 100 pounds. He had to go into the hospital regularly to drain the water. The RDA now is 2200 mg. Fifty years ago it was 400-500 mg. This increase occurred, because the food industries needed to sell more products. Processed foods are overloaded with sodiium and the human body was not designed to eat 2200 mg daily. In truth, human beings were not designed to eat processed foods.
@charisholisticcenter
@charisholisticcenter 5 лет назад
Fifty years ago the RDA for sodium was 400-500 mg. Human beings were not designed to eat processed foods with their excessive amount of sodium. If people ate more unprocessed fruits and vegetables their health would improve.. Americans spend more on medical care and are among the sickest in the world, because of the Standard American Diet.

This is rather rare, salt is everywhere. Sodium depletion, besides some rare diseases, will more "commonly" come from extreme exercise, such as in marathons and whatnot. But even there people will have a some risk of over-hydration, if they drink too much water or sports drinks fearing dehydration.

"incredibly expensive" might be a little much. It's not as if most people could not afford some salt in their food. The thing is that it was a vital commodity back in the days before refrigeration because salting and (and pickling) foods was the main method of preservation, so it was very useful and valuable both in it's direct practical application and as a trade-good. We're still talking about fairly large quantities though. You don't salt a barrel of fish with a few spoonfuls.

@Typhoon792
@Typhoon792 6 лет назад
Stephen Hill Lol, thank you, but no (regarding always being thirsty). I was saying specifically after a lot of salt may be consumed. Isn't that bad though? By consuming more water in response, you're saturating your body with even more water when in fact that's precisely the one and only problem with too much salt. I guess the question would therefore be, what would the right thing be to do in that circumstance?

Salt is sodium chloride Sodium is needed for nerve transmission and helping vital nutrient intake. Chloride is needed for the nervous system and regulating blood pH So it's basically too much or too little of anything is bad for you cx the body is about balance, respect it's wishes it is the difference between life and death for you so don't take it for granted of course you're entitled to a treat, just in moderation. Now excuse me while I devour this chocolate muffin •

Despite barely having any of these signs I know that I am definitely eating too much salt. I can't help it though, especially in summer I am literally craving for salt. Once I even bought the overpriced chips packs at a train station just so I could lick the salt off them. What I found the most baffling aside of not having these symptoms was that beside taking in loads of salt my blood pressure is actually really low.

I have the same issue, recently figured out it's because of something called Dysautonomia (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome specifically). Most doctors don't know much about it, but I suggest you do some research into it and visit a doctor who would be able to diagnose you (or not if you don't have it) properly.

Cook your own meals and replace some of your salt with Potassium Chloride. BUT limiting salt intake to low amounts is not the answer and actually has been shown to INCREASE MORTALITY.

Never obsessed to salt, but my mom is and trying to make me eat one when I make my breakfast. Salt taste better when you are not obsessed and make a daily life of it. Tasteless or anything, use a pepper for the extra. Or sauce for the better without salt (I use chicken sauce, and it's much better)

Natural salt is perfectly fine. Commercial salt isn't. Commercial salt has glass in it. The glass runs through your veins cutting you, your body repairs said cuts with cholesterol. This happens over and over, then they tell us we have too much cholesterol.

Actually salt is good, what Americans are missing is its partner Potassium... In fact several times the illnesses related to salt in the video talk about potassium deficiency. I kept waiting on the pause moment when the guy was like "... Wait hold on is not to much salt is low potassium that is the problem!" didn't happen... Many cultures around the world eat 2-3 the salt Americans do and live longer healthier lives.
@jaythunder5114
@jaythunder5114 6 лет назад
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. 1,500 mg of sodium is FAR FAR too low and can actually cause half of the problems listed on here and even more problems including lower mortality! It's very serious. This time BS will have to take my dislike for misinformation. Sure the rest of the video is on point to what happens when you have too much, but that's almost entirely related to potassium deficiencies. If you're not potassium deficient (which most Americans are) then your optimum threshold is actually somewhere in the upper limits of 4-5k milligrams of sodium which can be an upward of 11 GRAMS OF SALT per day!!

Fishes have different mechanisms, salt water fishes can eliminate salt, while freshwater fishes absorb salt! Take for example salmon fish, salmons through hormone release activate or deactivate salt absorption, these fishes swim on both waters, in different stages of their lives!

In conclusion... tastes good=bad, tastes like paper=good. I work with the elderly (80+) every day. Some are doing great, most are just waiting for the sun to set. Regular pain, more meds than a pharmacy, and are embarrassed they can't move without machine assistance. Seeing it first hand and speaking with them... I have decided to live while I can and accept the consequences.
