I have so many large serving items but I found I need them during the holidays & special occasions. But they cluttered up my kitchen, so I packed up what I didn’t use on a daily basis and now I store it in the basement. I bring it up when I need it for the holidays or parties then it gets washed, packed & returned to storage in the basement until I need it again.

I bought an OXO suction cup sponge holder that I’ve suctioned on the inside front of the sink so that you cannot see it when looking directly at the kitchen. It’s easily accessible to use and there are hole for drainage. I bought it on Amazon and I’m very happy with it. The ruggables are great. The liner stays on the floor and the rug itself can be laundered when dirty. Excellent investment. Great video and suggestions!

Although I’m a design fanatic, I’m ultimately a function over form person - especially in the kitchen. While bowls of produce look artful on the first few days, fruit flies and over-ripe fruit or having to change out the display with newly purchased fruit seems like a lot of effort. Same for live cuttings - one has to make sure that pests don’t accompany the cuttings, wash, trim, change the water daily, etc.. Really, it’s a lot, unless one uses faux. I also don’t mind the original hand/dish soap bottles in the kitchen - they are what they are. I go through them so frequently that reporting them into different dispensers seems like a lot as well. However, I do agree that buying large refill containers rather than smaller bottles reduces plastic waste so for that reason, it would be worth the effort.

Wow, I so agree. And moving the toaster after use, ugh. Waiting for it to cool off, and cleaning the crumb tray and wrapping the cord after one use are enough for me to give the toaster permanent counter space.
@wandaloskot
@wandaloskot 2 года назад
Totally agree, I tried the fruit thing, but I was just not able to use that many lemons or even apples to prevent them from decaying, and throwing away fruit is ridiculously wasteful. Not remotely funny though. Same with greenery or even flowers, I used to bring fresh hibiscus flowers from outside, we have plenty of these in FL, and green leaves, but as you said, there are pests that are often small and hiding quite in them well. Not a good idea. All of the sudden we had flying insects all over the place. And having a bowl of fake fruit for decoration is completely unappealing and as far from classy as it gets.

You're not the only one, Ashley and I've always felt the same way! On my kitchen counters are beautiful things-3 modern style glass candlestick holders (made for the fat candles). I designed a custom home and made sure it was exactly what I wanted. I've been called "obsessive" -I'm not; I just like to be surrounded an aesthetically pleasing space, even if it's a pantry. No museum ropes necessary but little trinkets, sponges, and paper towels are not on display in my kitchen either.

Refrigerator magnets! We renovated our kitchen 12 years ago, after living in our house for 24 years. When we bought new stainless appliances I let my husband believe they were the kind that weren't magnetic because I was so tired of the visual clutter he kept adding to on the fridge. He still doesn't know, and I am so happy having at least that one part of my kitchen uncluttered!

Thank you for your tips. One thing my mom taught me was that cleaning details matter. Keeping our sinks, faucets, counters, stove tops, etc polished including the corners, has a huge impact. If a faucet can't be replaced at least keep it shiny all around the edges. I've seen nice houses look marginal because the sink had built up grime. Just my two cents.

The toaster thing is the bane of my existence. For years my husband and I fought over the toaster being left on the counter, I would put it in a pantry or cabinet, he would want it out, convenient. He died...wasn't toaster related. I am now alone raising our 5 children who use the toaster daily, but it can't be a good one because they've broken 4 expensive ones so far in their lives. I have accepted that will have a cheap toaster on my counter for a few more years.

Here in Finland, we have breakfast cabinets... they store the toaster, kettle, etc.. so you can just open the cabinet and use them without taking them out. Also in my den from the 1700’s with original cooking fireplace I recently refinished the wood floor. It had been natural oak. Jumped out of the box. Used a clear blue stain. It is wonderful. Just a slight tinge. Entering the room it is more evident. I recently decided to use a high gloss navy to some extent. Therefore your advice today was most welcome. Clutter makes anything look cheap… simplicity and placement makes things look important… even in floral depts sale items… like an in season 20$ vase on sale for 5$ when given as a gift with fresh flowers in it gets ooohs and awes as a more pricy gift… there is a mind set to wealth … it doesn’t need a lot of money.

I upgraded to a touchless faucet with pull down spray from Home Depot and got rid of Sprayer on counter too and put in a top mount air disposal switch where sprayer was. Love it and it was on sale at an amazing price. Under $250 . Easy install as well. Also the builder grade faucet we replaced splashed water all over counter top because it was too high for our sink depth so I made sure faucet curved just an inch or so lower. What a difference in looks and utility.

I just decluttered my kitchen by moving my knives off the counter with an in-drawer bamboo knife block. I also got a real bamboo flatware drawer organizer and finally retired the the Walmart vintage mesh organizer from my first apartment 23 years ago. Lastly, had an appliance cabinet installed (as a part of a partial cabinet upgrade) with sliding drawers to strictly house my appliances (most are very nice looking if I do leave them on the counter). This breathed life into my kitchen. I also have a beautiful red Viking mixer that I used have on display. I just don't use enough to keep it out. I do leave my Haaden toaster on the counter. Not only do I use it daily, this is such a beautiful looking retro toaster that I am very tempted to get its partner tea kettle. For now, I'll just continue to hide my current ugly $15 Walmart vintage tea kettle in the appliance pantry between uses. Next up, my pantry.

Love these tips! Guilty of the green sponge, but they are always hidden. Others are tchotchkes/plants, really anything on top of cabinets, magnets all over the frig, big lettered signs that say, "KITCHEN", "LA CUCINA" (if you mistake your kitchen for another room, you have bigger problems 😉 ). Calendars on the wall, ugly trash cans, paper towels on top of the kitchen counters.

@@leannatimmerman9922 I have a paper towel holder mounted on the inside of the cabinet door beneath the sink. Alternatively, I have seen them mounted directly under a cabinet near the sink. Do some googling. Also, I think it's a personal preference and a matter of space. I don't have tons of space around my sink, and I'm a little OCD about too many things on my counter. Honestly, I don't think it's tacky or anything. I think it's if you do too many of these things. 😉.

I bought a pretty indoor-outdoor rug for my kitchen, and I just take it out to the driveway twice a year to pressure wash it. Works like a charm. It's rather firm and stiff, so it's not a trip or slip hazard, it protects my hardwood floors, and it adds a nice touch to the room's appearance. My kitchen is very small, so I left my cabinets naked, no hardware at all; that way, my clothes don't snag and tear on knobs as I walk past them (top drawers are ALWAYS exactly the same height as my pockets!), and my narrow passageways are just a little bit wider.

If you do plan on a kitchen remodel, a big thing that we LOVE was the refrigerator build out. I know counter depth is very in, but we did the build out for a deeper fridge because not only do I get a TON more storage in my fridge, you get this awesome deep above fridge cabinet. It’s deep enough to store our big counter top appliances like our air fryer and toaster. We also love to sous vides, so I can fit my vacuum sealer and oversized water tub so I don’t clutter my counter top.

When it comes to the small appliances I absolutely agree on having the most attractive ones out on the counter, and the most used, but something else to remember is to make sure they're clean and GUNK FREE. I never have soap containers out or anything extra by my sink but I do have a built in soap dispenser and a button for my disposal. Also add pictures from our travels that I can change along with a small green plant, sometimes a bowl of fresh vegetables or fruit, nothing fussy. I don’t know who started the shelf thing in kitchens that’s just a lot of extra cleaning and upkeep. I never leave the house without my kitchen and bathrooms clean. If I walk into someone’s kitchen and it’s not clean or picked up I would not be able to eat there. Just sayin’ How about the inside of the refrigerator?
