This short video essay outlines 9 Squadron's operation of the Iroquois helicopter in Vietnam. Written by retired Wing Commander Bob Redman.
The animated recreations used in this essay are approximations only of the aircraft and the terrain.
There are some remarkable original home movies taken by 9 Squadron personnel. Unfortunately they have been gifted to the Australian War Memorial and are now under strict copyright and we cannot show them here without paying many thousands of dollars in licensing fees. We've done our best to recreate animations in place of the original footage. To view original footage of the Vietnam war you can use the search function on the AWM website.

One of the NON-routine operations (NOT mentioned here) was by 2 courageous 9 Squadron pilots at the Battle of Long Tan in August 1966. Running critically short of ammunition, the troops under fire made a call for resupply. Two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) UH-1B Iroquois helicopters of No 9 Squadron, captained by Flight Lieutenants Frank Riley and Cliff Dohle, took off in torrential rain and failing light and flew at treetop height to the location. Arriving overhead at about 6pm, the aircraft hovered at 30 feet (nine metres) while their crews dropped boxes of ammunition wrapped in blankets through the trees, directly into the company positions below. Together with NZ artillery, they saved the lives of the sutrvivors. After the enemy withdrew, 9SQN helicopters returned to assist with evacuating the wounded to hospital.

Hi Peter - the purpose of the piece was not to pick out operations, there are way too many of them for a short overview. But we do have a comprehensive history here raafdocumentary.com/albatross-to-black-hawk-a-history-of-raaf-no-9-squadron/

@@raafdocumentaries Thanks for reading. I put it up as I understood that the two pilots did it off their own initiative.

Dad ... (Ret) Sqdn Ldr Mike J Andrews spent 1969 in 9 Sqdn. He went on as Sqdn Ldr. for Ch47s after Vietnam. He was command helo for 5 ship SAS extraction which included Pvt David Fisher 27Sep1969. Fisher fell to death and body found, repatriated and buried in Oct 2008 Syd. I took Dad to memorial.... he was haunted all his life for that loss and it affected him greatly, of course taking responsibility for the tragedy. (The memorial was first I'd known about incident) Dad is still alive at 83 living in Mt Tamborine with 2nd wife.

Strange question, but did we ever have the capability to mount AGMs on hand should the need arise?

The choppers transferred to Army in 1990. Just before I joined rhe RAAF Then Wing Commander Angus Houston, later the CDF, was I believe the last CO of 9SQN But why the transfer? Dunno

It was seen to be a more logical place for the capability, it’s a tactical level asset that is used almost exclusively by the army, it’s a lot easier to task and integrate if you also own the capability rather than having to deal with a seperate service
