The title of "Batgirl" has been held by five women in the DC Universe, most famously Barbara Gordon. For more awesome content, check out: whatculture.com/ Follow us on Facebook at: / whatculture Catch us on Twitter: / wc_comics
I remember someone on a message board that I no longer use got irrationally angry at me for saying that Barbara Gordon was Jim Gordon's biological daughter (because of the Post-Crisis reboot that made Jim her uncle and adoptive parent). This was decades ago: all of DC's subsequent reboots have made her Jim's biological daughter again.
Tbh I never like that idea, not only does it unnecessarily complicate things but barbara I'm pretty sure or atleast heard that barbara was made to be Jim's biological daughter from the beginning so yeah to me it just complicates things but comics do that but still
You forgot the fact that Barbara Gordon had two brothers (pre-Crisis older brother Tony Gordon and pre-Flashpoint younger brother James Gordon Jr), that she met Clark Kent Superboy and briefly made her debut as Mighty Girl pre-Crisis, and that she has received a doctorate in Library Science shortly before she made her debut as Batgirl as a 26/27-year-old adult in 1966.
I actually like the idea of Batgirl still having her disability. Imagine they implemented that into the cancelled Batgirl movie, where she was recovering from her handicap but still had to worry about it hindering her.
It would be interesting subject matter for a movie, most people don't realize that the paralysis of Barbara Gordon was an elseworld event from The Killing Joke. It initially wasn't meant to be a part of the main continuity. That is why those injuries have or haven't happened depending on the story being told. Sometimes she is Batgirl and sometimes she is/was Oracle.
@@killSeal I feel that would be too soon, though, getting paralyzed at the end of her supposed-to-be debut movie which is also her origin story. Maybe in a second or third movie, but that'll never happen now with the movie being cancelled and made a tax write-off.
I’ve always loved the idea of Barbara’s injury leaving her feeling like she has to give up superhero work and has lost her identity. She falls into a depression of sorts, until one day there is a mission that really needs someone on comms, and Barbara takes the offer up and it gives her a new zest for life. She does a bunch of stuff like working from her wheel chair, physical therapy, etc to recover from her injury, but has to wear a back brace type thing. Eventually she can return to the streets of Gotham as Batgirl, but some days she still suffers from a lot of pain and needs to rest and continue as Oracle from her wheelchair instead. It would give rep to people with chronic illness and injury that are told they are faking it because they don’t need a wheel chair all the time. Also in my idea the bullet just missed her spine and because she has so many muscles it wasn’t a paralysing injury as it provided some sort of padding.
Cassandra took on the name Orphan because it was David Cain's alias. After he died (for a time) Cass took on his name. Not because Cassandra's relationship with Mommy Shiva.
It's hard to imagine anyone who has suffered as much as Barbara Gordon has since she first became Batgirl. I'm surprised you didn't mention the first batgirl though, Betty Kane. I also was never unhappy that Barbara was adopted by Jim and his wife, Barbara, after his brother and wife died. In a way, it made sense seeing as how both Jim and his wife, Barbara, never had the same characteristics as Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl.
Cus waman. No but for real, they fleshed her out enough for it to be believable. Which is so rare nowadays. Usually we see new characters destroying established ones instead of building their own achievements first. Which is necessary or you just build garbage that offends.
In the current comics, Commissioner James Gordon and Barbara Eileen Gordon are the biological parents of Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and James Gordon, Jr. (aka J.J. Gordon the serial killer).
Wait so who was the fifth?? -Cassandra Cain -Barbara Gordon -Stephanie Brown -Betty Kane (That was her name, right? With the yellow and red costume) -???
@@darkstardarin Okay cool, thank you! If they're going off *possible* timelines then might as well include the Dark Knight Returns universe as well Edit: typo
@@tyrant-den884 - all three have similar last names (Kane and Cain) but Betty and Kate Kane are cousins to each other and Bruce on his mom’s side. Cassandra Cain is the daughter of a lesser-known Bat-villain.
I didn't forget about any of this. I didn't know some of it... but like 7/9 I knew and remembered. I doubt anyone forgot most of this. But yeah, I WILL forget that Jim Gordon SOMETIMES isn't Barbara's dad, because he usually is so who cares? Plus, even if he's not biologically, he's her real dad. The one who raised her and the one who's always there for her.
I always found it odd that Barbara spent so much time in a wheelchair. I mean, in a world in which she & Batman have access to magic, alien technology, technology from the future, & advanced human technology, they can't find a way to hear a severed nerve? Odd...
And I miss it every Sunday I watched it. Thursday to when they had The other Batwoman her to. Oh I hope this doesn't sound lame but I miss stargirl too😳😳😳😳😊😊😊😊😊
Grace is my favorite batgirl man I wish some how under the James Gunn Rule I really pray we see that movie I'll bet you any thing despite what They said and claim I bet it nothing like they say I bet you it good. Batwoman has it misses but all and all I enjoyed it.😊😊😊😊😊
I thought Barbara becoming oracle, was a lot more inspirational, as her becoming batgirl. One of the more regrettable decisions of the last years was restoring her as batgirl. Oracle was unique, showing superiority of mind over matter.
Tim Drake and Carrie Kelly's obsession with joining Batman was just copied from Batgirl. Barbara gordon was obsessed with being a vigilante. There are too many oracle nuts on here, to me Barbara gordon is Batgirl. Cassandra cain to me seems far more like a silent ninja character than batgirl. Stephanie brown is better as the Spoiler.
