I first climbed hood when I was super young and i just wasn’t prepared for the pucker factor of descending the old chute. Also I’m super excited for my first winter climb and ski on hood this winter

I find it interesting that I’m most stressed going up rather than down haha but good job!! When you planning to ski it?!

I’ve been wanting to try Hood as well - thanks for sharing this (and your other Hood climb video)! Super helpful tips and a great reminder to be cognizant of the dangers even on a super popular climb.

K2 makes one of the very few models of crampon compatible snowboard boots (front and back bar clamp crampons). While still a compromise, I’ve found them to be a great solution for my combined climbs (snow and ice) and subsequent downhill shred.

Right on! I picked up the Jones MTB boot and they actually have a crampon lip for the semi auto grivels which have been nice!

Probably won’t be climbing Mt. Hood anytime soon, good stuff though. Been watching your JMT videos which are super rad and helpful. Going NOBO late July. Keep up the good work.

My buddy Matt said that winter climbing on Mt. Hood is like being on a stairmaster, in a freezer locker, staring at a white wall, with a fan blowing on you. I've been up 10 plus times and.. yeah. It was always brutal but I did it.

Dude that sucks you lost your inReach. Too bad it wasn't tracking so you could tell where it was. I had no idea about waiting for corn; I always assumed you want to gtfo as quick as possible, but if waiting in a safe area that makes sense
@ChadLubinski
@ChadLubinski 2 года назад
You bring up a really good point about that corn snow! Yes, typically it is not very good to wait for the snow to heat up in avy terrain, but most of the stuff below Mt. Hood is pretty chill in terms of angle of slope!

When did you climb. Great info by the way. Thanks

Hey thanks man! I climbed on a sunny weather window in January. Most people do it in May or June tho

Hi Chad, I'm about to hike next week, seems there are still snow, do I need the whole suite? is it ok if I just bring spikes and poles? thanks
@ChadLubinski
@ChadLubinski 20 дней назад
@@wardenofthenorth-w5d a Hood summit at this time of year is not a good idea. Too much rock and ice fall. The primary summit season is March-June.

Howdy Chad, why don't I ever see snowboarders going down the summit? I have never ski'd but I have been on a board for years.
@ChadLubinski
@ChadLubinski 9 месяцев назад
You can go down Old Chute depending on the conditions, but oftentimes there's alot of rime ice. We actually did it last spring

I'm thinking about climbing hood by myself as my first summit next month. Starting around 5 or 6am. The assent is only like 3 miles so it should take me no more than 2 hours to reach the top if I can walk a 15 minute mile with ease
@ChadLubinski
@ChadLubinski Год назад
Yeah I think that’s a really bad idea.
@tyronesmith3812
@tyronesmith3812 Год назад
@@ChadLubinski I honestly don't see how that's a bad idea. I have the right gear and I'm in better physical shape than most people.
@johnjames9359

@@tyronesmith3812 I think the keyword is “first summit” and also the over confidence. Mountaineering is humbling. I think most people here would recommend St Helens, Adams, Washington etc before hood as to asses your skill level and your capabilities/gear. Rather find yourself wishing you had something on Helens than hood etc
@tyronesmith3812
@tyronesmith3812 Год назад
I have summitted st helens, south sister and thielsen before. I didn’t consider them my first summits as they were all pretty easy and below 10,000 ft

Most people on hood are suburbanites that have no business on the mountain. They do research, get exited about the gear, plan the trip for a year, it’s their vacation from their office job, they take pictures, video and then go home bragging to their office mates and friends living in their suburban homes and claim they are mountaineers! Hood is easy. I like your confidence. Get after it!
