I’m literally starting nursing school next week. This makes me scared. Edit: This might be my 5th week of nursing school. I am struggling with pharmacology but I am doing well on others. Breaks doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon but I am enjoying it. It’s hard, I cried a couple of times for my Checkoffs but I passed all of it. I am really struggling with pharm though. Thanks for all your replies! It helped a lot. Edit 2.0: I passed all the classes I was worried about when I commented this! Unfortunately I failed maternity and peds during the summer which I have to retake this fall. It’s crazy how my grade can go from 93 to 83 (85 is our passing) real quick because of finals. I’ll update again when I graduate unless I fail again and not be able to pursue the program anymore. 😅

I’m a CNA and I’m in nursing school. One thing I wish I would’ve known before working in a hospital setting is how broken you will feel when you see how shitty the care is in some places. And how much you would stress about your patients. I had to learn how to leave it at work. I started coming home thinking about these patients and stressing like they were my own family. And you gotta learn how to work through it and leave it at work where it belongs.

Girl yes some nurses can be really mean! Half of our first semester of clinicals we’d sit at a table for 7 hours because the nurses would never let us do anything or see anything. And one of our nursing instructors who is a nurse obviously was sending out emails to us the first week she taught us telling us how we would never make it as nurses. My mind was blown that a person who went into nursing could be so nasty just to be nasty.

Yeah Buddy definitely was. As if nursing school wasn’t stressful enough, adding in instructors who bully their students didn’t help. She was threatening to fail all of us the entire semester. There was one point where we all almost quit midway through until this year when our nice instructor would be back

I agree with you, I feel like many nurses forget the fact that nursing is centered around providing care for others. It pisses me off that some nurses feel contempt making others feel miserable. That is a toxic way to live your life.

I wish I knew how awful the health care system is as a whole. I wish I knew how much shit they dump onto nurses, were the middleman for all interdisciplinary team members, if lab hasn’t come to draw the trough on time, it’s ur fault for not calling lab, if the EKG technician isn’t there promptly to do a post cardio version EKG, it’s on the nurse to call them and remind them to do their job. Doctors never put in clear discharge orders or instructions, it’s on the nurse to figure out what education to provide or try like hell to get clarification. I wish I knew how unorganized and how truly unsafe health care is as whole. It’s frustrating to be the middleman standing right in the center of all the chaotic bullshit. I wish I knew it was also the nurses responsibility to do clerk work as well. We wear so many different hats because healthcare is less concerned about providing care and more about business and often is at the expense of nurses; dumping more responsibility on the nurses. I wish I knew that nursing really isn’t nursing.... we’re pulled in so many different directions that it makes patient care just another annoying task on our shoulders. It has totally ruined my will to do bedside nursing. Dealing with all of that shit on top of dealing with rude patients, rude family members and going above and beyond regardless if it’s appreciated - it’s enough to make anyone miserable.

What it sounds like to me is that you and others that feel this way, should find the passion that got you there in the first place. Every job at every turn no matter where is hard, people no matter what are torn and wear so many different hats.. but if you don’t love your job, maybe you need to find a way to change that. Patients don’t need someone like you caring for them if you aren’t in the right mind set. Talk to someone, get it figured out so you can get back to the job you love. Otherwise, find something else.

There are a lot of great things about nursing, I promise. People just share the things they had no clue about. I love connecting with my patients. It is a very challenging career, but also very rewarding. If you have a passion for helping people you will do well. Sometimes you have to try a few different things before you find your place but there are so many avenues of nursing. ❤️

It is hard and not for everyone, I have had to take some breaks to care for myself, but I have never wanted to do anything else. If it is your calling it is a labor of love, I know there are videos out there about the great parts of being a nurse. Nurse Blake is fun to watch.

Aww there’s lots of good things about being a nurse. There is good and bad in every job. In my opinion the rewards out way the negatives. Having that one patient say they appreciate you, makes all the difference in the world. 💕

People like to complain more than anything. Listen to people spread birth horror stories. Reality is that nursing school is hard, but only 4 yrs of your life. Then you get to be an RN and it's an amazing career.

I’ve been a nurse for over a year now. What surprised me when I started working was how unglamorous it really is. So many people/patients are very unappreciative and treat you like a glorified waitress. I also thought I would see lots more codes & crazy stuff, but they aren’t as common as I thought before I started working as a floor nurse. I thought I would find a niche right away as well, and I felt unsure for a long time. Now I’m trying to get into a specialty, but it’s competitive at my hospital & it’s been a struggle to get where I want to be. I agree with what you said about death. My first comfort care patient who died had a spouse who was flipping out and I was totally unprepared for my own emotions seeing their pain. Cried in the med room and all the way home that day. Nursing is different than how you think it will be, but if it’s your calling, you will embrace its challenges and enjoy what you do ❤️

Omg the learning curve being a new nurse is REAL. In nursing school I was that annoying student who always got super high scores but let me tell you: that shit when out the window the second I stepped on the floor. I’m about 5 months into my first job and I’m still barely staying afloat every shift. It’s actually been a lot more stressful than nursing school for me because I’ve had to learn how to be efficient and think quickly on my feet (and trust me I’m not that good at it yet) which nursing school did not prepare me for.

I feel like the whole Covid-19 pandemic has made nurses bond with each other more. They are definitely more respectful towards each other and value each other more. The public has learned to appreciate healthcare workers more which is great.

As a patient I want to say I am very grateful for nurses. I went to the ER the other day and had an emergency surgery and then was admitted and I was terrified and the nurses were super nice and helped calm me down and get me through it.

I'm about to finish my first semester of nursing school and I personally wish I would have known how high the instructor's expectations are for you as a student. The expectations for professionalism, coming to class already knowing the material, coming to skills lab having practiced already, having everything you need at all times (badge, stethoscope, correct papers). The expectation nears on perfection.

I’m in Medical School becoming a brain surgeon strictly for children. I cannot stress enough how important it is to do well in high school and to not mess around in your prerequisites because they will follow you. Always work hard and you will achieve great things ❤️

I wish I would've known more about food prep before nursing school bc I'm alwaaaays forgetting to bring food to clinicals/school and there's no where to buy food around school so then I'm starving the whole day! Another thing I wish I would've known how competitive and wild people can get in nursing school; everyone's getting the same license and there's enough to go around if u work for it!

I have lost “friendships” which they want to see me fail. They stop talking to me and always say goodbye. I have memorized the word goodbye that I have become heartless and comfortable being alone even when I go shopping. Someday, I pray I have friendships that will be afraid to say goodbye but cherish me.

One thing I wish others had known about was, if you aren’t 100% dedicated to being YOUR 100% then don’t go. You are working with peoples lives! You aren’t a kid, you are now an adult. Also, if you’re a nurse don’t wear perfume, you will choke someone with your scents. Lastly, don’t be rude and if you have no bedside manner you gotta go. Don’t be a catty ass person, enough said.

Every single word is solid TRUTH. I've been an LPN for almost 24 years, and in January I enter my last semester of my RN program. I wished I had realized that while loyalty is a good thing, dont stay in one place for too long. Burnout is real. This is why I finally got brave enough to go back for my RN. I want to earn my bachelors afterwards also, for more opportunities. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience!

Hello, I’m 18 and a freshman in college in the nursing program. I’ve been super down the past couple of days because I’ve somehow come across all types of videos about nurses and the “reality” of it I guess you can say. I’ve began to rethink the whole career in general because of the things that people say about nursing. For example, the long hours, the quick almost immediate burnout within just a few years, the exhaustion, and all of the other things that you’ve mentioned and more that I’ve heard. I’m afraid that once I become a nurse I’ll be miserable and not be able to live a healthy work/life balance. I would prefer doing something smaller like office nursing or clinic nursing where you have steady hours so I can someday have a family and not be gone a lot for unknowing amount of times. I feel like that would really make me miserable. Maybe I chose the wrong career path for my wants😩 nursing definitely didn’t “call my name” like it does for some people who know for sure that’s what they want to do, so I’m very confused at the moment 😕

Hi Marissa, Nursing definitely has its challenges. I suggest becoming a CNA so you get experience & see how you feel about your pre req classes such as Anatomy & Physiology. Don’t be discouraged. Nursing is a great profession to go into. I’m currently in nursing school:)

15 year nurse med surg mostly-it is blue collar work with a college degree, no respect,lots of responsibility, mandatory overtime, you will work holidays, no going out to lunch-30 minutes in a room to eat what you brought and you will be disturbed a lot while eating, 12 hour shifts and you may not sit down much at all, you deal with doctors, every department in the hospital and the family for all of your patients at all times, chart on all your patients before you leave even if you had a bad day with emergency situations you will stay and finish and be back for your shift the next day, night shift is a whole different world-you will be tired always-even on your days off. It is HARD physical work so if you want to have your own office, be off on weekends and holidays and spend a lot of time with family and friends, you will burn out quickly.

i wish i had known how to actually study!! first semester was a huge wake up call when i realized that i couldn’t just rely on “remembering” what was taught in lecture like during pre reqs and still do well on tests. i had to bust my behind relearning how to learn in my twenties to make it through the nursing program!

Agree with all of these points. Yes, definitely can usually tell if a nurse got into it for the money, they don’t tend to be very good. Another point is that you get to leave when your work is done, not necessarily when your shift ends.

I’m a nursing professor in an RN program, and while some nursing programs encourage or require their students to be CNAs, I actually disagree. We have many CNAs who enter our nursing program - most struggle with switching from a skill-based mindset to a critical thinking mindset. We also see this in LPNs and medical assistants. In my 15 years of teaching RN students, people with no healthcare background seem to adapt more easily and quickly to the role of the RN than those who have to switch roles. The amount of critical thinking and clinical decision making required of RNs is far beyond the performance of skills (taking blood pressures, drawing blood, starting IVs, suctioning tracheostomy’s, etc.). LPNs, CMAs/RMAs and CNAs are all skill-based professionals. Student RNs learn to perform skills, but these are a very small part of what nursing students learn in nursing school. In an RN program, students are taught about both normal and abnormal health states and how to make critical decisions based on the knowledge they’ve gained in their math, science (including psychology and sociology) and nursing classes.

ER nurse here (6 months in)... I wish I knew just how out of hand PEC patients could be. I wish I knew how many dang phone calls you have to make, how to talk to dr’s & how to give a good report. Sooo many things nursing school doesn’t teach/prepare you for!! Thanks for this video, love your content❤️

Excellent points!!! 👌 1)The reality of the learning curve AFTER you graduate and hit the floor is missed entirely by almost all of nursing students/new grads. I know I thought when I graduated in 2003 the worst part was over. Nope! 2) Get ready for harassment by some nurses when you are a new nurse and as you go. This is so wrong but unfortunately, as old as time. My MIL is a retired RN and experienced the same type of issues that I have. 3)Think you mentioned a Code and when a pt. passes. This was the hardest thing for me to cope with when I was new and just starting out. I was respiratory therapist be4 I was an RN and I'll never forget my first code where my patient died. It's never easy and can be very difficult to process depending on the situation. 3) Mandated overtime is completely unsafe for nurses and their patients!!! Hospitals putting profit over the health and safety and the very lives of their patients and nurses 😠 4) Mandated overtime, the escalation of violence and the mental, physical and emotional exhaustion/ burnout in healthcare are the main reasons many nurses are leaving the bedside. Hope it goes well for you in the OR! 💕🙏

I'm glad I caught your channel again! I'm 1/2 way through nursing school (ADN) and I'm grateful I got into a program where the grading scale is C:75%, B:81%, A:92%. Nursing school is HARD- I have a bachelors and graduated with honors (well, I had a 3.496 and honors was a 3.5) and nursing school is kicking my @ss. My faculty is all about nurturing and teach us to not accept the "nurses eat their young" attitude. We use the term "lateral violence" because that's what it is- being hostile, passive aggressive, etc. is an act of violence. Ruining someone's day to make yourself feel superior or making someone feel unwelcome on your team is an act of aggression. We get enough of that from patients and their families. we don't need to do that to each other.

I'm not a nurse, but I have been a patient more times than I can count since I was a child. More recently, my father had open heart surgery and my mom went through cancer treatment. Nurses are everything in these situations. Your day to day needs and recovery assistance will all be taken care of by nurses and techs. I was always taught to be respectful and appreciative of the nurses taking care of me. In my 40+ years in and out of hospitals, I've had maybe 2 nurses that seemed to either be burned out or for some reason had a bad attitude. The rest have all been helpful, knowledgeable and willing to listen. I'm so sorry to all of you that have had to put up with terrible behavior. Thank you for continuing to help, care and be the backbone of the medical fields. ❤️

Yep mine was a C for 80, anything less than a 78 was a fail in my program. I was an A student going into the program and scraped by as a B student 🤦🏽‍♀️😭. Nursing school was rough but working as a nurse was rough. Nursing school was easy compared.

ellezc aw dude I know how hard that is!! I’ve been getting some Cs on exams and it definitely was a traumatic experience the first time I got one in nursing school. I just had to realize and be reminded by family and friends that it doesn’t matter what I get as long as I pass. No one will ever look at my grades again and I really had to let my pride be knocked down and be grateful I was passing. Nursing school is hard! Take pride in the fact that you got in, you’re doing it, and you’re working toward your dream! Sending hugs xoxo

I'm in my first year in nursing school (in Canada) and they are sorta pushing up towards paired nursing. For obvious reasons in clinical you are never really gonna be alone. But my ta said even actually RNs are now becoming more okay with paired nursing for patient safety and nurse safety

Thank you for making this video. I know you've probably heard this 100's of times but I wanted to personally send my thanks. Right now I'm 28 (almost 29) and just starting my pre-req's for nursing school. People are encouraging and believe I'm going to be a great addition to the nurse community but I know there's so much more power within someone that's needed to "survive" the path to obtaining the degree/cert. itself. This video really helped me consider some things that I hadn't such as having to deal and handle with violent patients as well as what some programs don't cover or touch base on. I subscribed in hopes to get some more light "shed" on this career and hope it helps keep me sane and motivated to keep going. I always feel like I'm too old to start doing this but I know that helping people is something I actually enjoy and want to be more "hands on" with. My heart is always there considering the patients situation but also know that as a medical professional balancing empathy with addressing the situation as a professional only is a skill that will take time. I doubt you'll read this but I just wanted to send my thank you and let you know that this video was helpful to someone like me who's a bit impatient to start nursing school but also wanting to stay on the path of success rather than quickly crossing that finish line. :)

I’m a cna but I understand scrappy people. There was one 94 year old resident I had and she was swinging on me and I was 8 months along with my first son and trying to waddle and dodge while changing this resident i wish it was recorded. I succeeded in the job I was trying to do and no harm to my now two year old child.

I passed my 1st semester then failed my second. I ended up luckily getting into another program that started a few weeks after I failed out of my first nursing School. Like she said if you want it you will do it. Just keep going dont stop you will become a nurse!

I just finished my first term of nursing school. The minimum exam score is brutal. Ours is 75% and every patho exam freaks me out that I might bomb one test and I won't be able to catch up. It really is a night and day difference between pre-reqs and nursing school. I was told that ahead of time and I didn't understand until I was in it. It's been like trying to swim upstream, and if you slack off even a little, you're screwed.

About to finish my 3rd semester of Nursing school and honestly, I felt that 1st semester was the easiest for me. but that’s probably bc I’ve been doing med related things since my freshman year of high school, so I knew quite a bit going into my program compared to others. I do agree that it’s where they weed people out though! we lost maybe 20-25 students my 1st semester out of 140. I think by now, we’re at around 100 students tbh. it’s tough for sure. also had my first mental breakdown - full on bawling my eyes out and almost had a panic attack this semester, I didn’t think I’d get to that point. but I’m at the end right now and just have my finals left, hanging in there, barely lol

Hi Alyssa, this video has been continuously in and out of my youtube recommendation list, and now I have finally decided to watch it. I have all the time in the world. I am soon to be a first-year college student, but I have completed all my nursing pre-requisites as of yesterday, and I have completed my AA. I did not apply to any nursing school because I didn't believe in myself, and I lack the self-advocacy I need to be a successful nursing student and nurse. So I have decided to double major in clinical psych and nursing, and I will be done with my psych degree in the spring of 2021 and start nursing school come summer of 2021. The reason why I kept stalling to watch the video was the fear of losing my hope to become a nurse and the slow-growing faith I have in myself, but instead, it did the exact opposite it inspired me, even more, to keep going and to not give up. I wish that this video was around before I started nursing school lol. Our failing grade was anything less than a 78 and the competencies were just as stressful as exams. I definitely know the struggle and I was not prepared at all. I just graduated in December 2019 and am trying to get a RN job and I'm happy that you pointed out some helpful tips. The grading scale definitely depends on which college you go to. I went to nursing school at a local community college and the minimum passing grade was 70%

The grading scale for my nursing school was 80-85 (C), 86-92 (B), & 93-100 (A).. I was one of the lucky ones who caught on to information they test on quick so I did really well.. but it is manageable & you can do it for anyone just starting out!

This is one of the main reasons I encourage nursing students to become aids at least per diem in a hospital bc nursing school really doesn’t give you a grasp on what nursing actually is until you’re in the field. I know way too many people who go into nursing and regret their choice bc of the realities of nursing. Even though bedside is not the ONLY option in nursing, It is definitely a stepping stone in order to get into other specialties

Rosa Agreed. I’ve been a cna for almost 8 years and going into the nursing program I have NO IDEA how people who don’t have a background in the medical field can make it. There’s SO much, it’s so difficult, and without a little of that experience, I feel it makes it harder on nursing students.

Rosa I really agree with you anyone interested in nursing really need to do some type of job being on a med surg floor getting some real hands on experience !! Don’t get into a job for the money because if that’s all you’re Looking for you will not like nursing!! I’ve been in it for 32 yrs, and I ❤️nursing been in many areas ER, labor/ delivery/ maternity/ med surg/ pre cert/ office / clinic! Really research a profession before you go into it!!!

I just failed my first nursing class in my first semester. I have to repeat the class next semester and honestly its not the content its the questions they ask and the answers to pick from. I feel like you can't understand what its like unless you've been through it

I got a 76% on my anatomy grade this semester and I’m going into Occupational Therapy. I agree with the questions they ask, all the anatomy teachers for my Bio 191 class are all different. I was at 84% as an average grade the whole course until the final exam that I had today. Very discouraging! And afraid I won’t get a B or higher if I retake it! I might retake it with a different teacher. Anyways, God will lead you wherever he wants you to go!

As stressful as nursing school was, I was not prepared for the additional stress being a nurse. I'm so thankful that the other nurses and my charge are always willing to help. But all of the BS that we have to deal with is so crazy.

I wish I had known that it does not matter when you do what is right, what is best or what is safest. Someone will always be upset with you, someone will always disagree, and in toxic environments, someone will always rip you a new one. I wish I knew that I would never once feel appreciated, ever. I’m learning to cope with it now, but I do see myself leaving the career within 10 years.

Im currently a high school student and I watch nursing videos to see if this is what I really want to do. Where Im located there is a health and science academy to prep students who want to study medicine. Also there is a free CNA class that juniors or seniors can take. With the videos I have watched having previous knowledge and experience does help.

I had a roommate who failed nursing school by a fraction of a percent. He never missed a day of school, was really dedicated. He was so disappointed after all those years & money spent. I myself am a former nursing assistant & left the job because I was verbally & physically assaulted daily. And, yes, unbelievably by the elderly. They never told me that in school. They should have. I personally highly recommend that people consider working as a nursing assistant first to get a realistic idea of what the job will be like, talk to actual nurses on the job before investing in a nursing degree. You might love it! I didn't but at least I only lost a few months and $1,400. Really super helpful channel, thanks.

I think what you mean is “now that you’re working.” When I was a student I wasn’t working 60-70 hours a week, missing bedtime weekends and holidays with my kids. I very much enjoy my job but I am also in a learning stage and being honest about that in my videos. Most people on RU-vid are living behind a facade whereas I share the honest parts of not just being a nurse, but also being a working mother.

I am a student getting ready to go into the nursing program. I have three more classes before I enter. I have managed to earn straight A's. My biggest challenge has been biology. My teacher use to create questions for the nclex. You can imagine how hard his exams can be at times. I can't say that I have a passion for nursing but it's something I'm interested in. I can't wait to see what the nursing program has to offer. I could sense your strong honesty in this video. I couldn't really see the ducking and dodging scenario. Maybe I'm missing something. But I easily saw some of your major points. Thanks for creating this video. It was very informative. ♥️

I remember my first patient ever in nursing school, it was in a nursing home and my little demented old lady took a swing at me when I tried to take her blood pressure, I had NO idea what to do lol Now, 2.5 years later I'm about to graduate! I think working as a CNA has definitely helped me get used to patient care and how many times you just have to put on a smile and do the best you can to make that patient's care the best possible no matter if they take swing at you or not :) Good luck to everyone out there in nursing school or if you're working as a nurse right now!

When I became a nurse I genuinely did it to help people because I love helping people. However, after becoming a nurse I learned that the majority of the patients you care for DO NOT want your help. There are many that will leave AMA, that will disrespect you and treat you like crap, they will cuss you out, try to hit you, spit at you, etc. families and patients can be truly evil and disgusting. There are times where you can do absolutely everything in your power to help them, you will miss lunch breaks and not even be able to go to the bathroom and all that doesn’t matter, they will still be mean to you and disrespect you. THAT is what I wish I would have known. I wish I would have known how people can truly be like. It is few times when I actually have a patient or family member who is kind or thankful. It makes your job so hard when you’re already getting putting your well being aside to help a stranger and their families and visitors.

Cheryl Williamson you definitely will need to learn how to. Not necessarily just YOU but also ANYONE that wants to go Into this field. Even the most laid back and patient of people will get tested. If you don’t want to deal with this there are many other fields of nursing. I and other nurses who have worked in bedside for a while have just learned how to grow really thick skin and just skid through the day without letting it affect us. Sometimes really it’s actually funny and you learn to laugh it Off. Other times though you want to punch someone in the face lol. Just being real.

And a 91% is considered a B+ What I wish I knew about nursing school is how catty/resentful the girls can be, especially if you’re known for doing well! I’m 3 weeks from graduating.
