Relative to Tip # 9, I like to tell students they do not have to try and win the rally on every shot they take. They need to learn to be patient and wait for an optimum shot that will improve their chance of hitting a winning shot.

Love the video! I started playing about a month ago and beginners open, I've reached the point where I can run circles around most of the players. I decided to try intermediate and it was a completely different game, I got smoked. The main thing that concerns me is slams and being able to hit them back. This video had some great tips which I think will give me some more confidence. I'm still playing beginners because the Int. players are way too fast for me! Thank you for the tips.

I like the comment comparing Pickleball to chess. Another analogy is a sniper. A sniper is patient, and always ready to “pull the trigger” but knows when that is the best time. He’s also chosen carefully the best position to be in both before and after the shot. He’s also ready for a followup shot in case he didn’t put away the target on the first shot.

Some good tips, but I totally disagree with #8. Where in the bounce you should take the shot depends on several things. I seldom take a shot right at the Apex of the bounce. Also, as a 50 years Chess tournament veteran, I am always dubious of comparisons. In this case, you do a pretty good job. I think the analogy is apt: in both games, although you need to be ready to pounce on your opponents' mistakes, usually, if you try to attack before some sort of weakness is there, the counterattack is deadly.

I believe modern pickleball is a power game. I don't believe, however, in banging balls from the baseline when my opponents are up at the NVZ line, My feet are exposed and I am giving my opponent a lot of angles. At the pro level most 3rd shot drives are hit right at the opponents' chest. That way, they don't have time to get out of the way and end up hitting high balls, As far as I know 3rd shot drives are hit to set up an easy 5th shot drop, My two cents. Any thoughts?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
3rd shot drives are just another option to the drop or lob. There are many different reasons to drive the ball. To get an easier 5th shot, to try to get some free points, to set up a shake and bake, etc. We will do an extensive video on this soon.

Hi Nicole & Jorden. While I personally like to take the ball at its apex or even after; there are times and reasons to quickly short hop the ball. Players like the Dawsons use quick hop dinking to take time away from their opponent. At times I use it to prevent a long dinks to get behind me. The bad part of using that short hop is that balls will not bounce up into the yellow attack zone limiting your attack options. The other thing I would like to mention is that defensively midcourt you will seldom be able to allow the ball to apex. It might make for a good video of when is it best to allow a ball to apex and when is it best short hop or chip and charge the ball.

Thanks advance.. 🙇‍♀️
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
I’m not clear on exactly what you’re asking in #1, can you please clarify your question? For #2, work on your hand quickness so you can catch it out in front as much as possible and work in sliding out of the way with the feet or shifting your upper body if there’s less time. Cover your body with your backhand.

I wanted to point out a new way of thinking for people to think about? I have a very short history of pickelball. at 70 ,I played tennis,badminton, and ping pong tournaments , but 40 years ago. we all hear, if you want to get better, play better people? I have found my best improvement days were playing people, not as good as I am. I can practice shots that are harder to practice with better power people. you may need a mindset of getting better than winning my third shot drop was non-existent . No soft hands popping it up, with too stiff of a grip. by playing easier people, I am slowing down and softening up. possibly a 50% improvement in three days. on the third shot drop. and am starting to believe I can hit it when the ball is coming. for those looking to improve , try it.

I disagree, pickleball is faster game than tennis unless you're pusher tennis player? Beings the court 1/3 smaller , It seems faster. The short paddle and plastic balls can not be hit with force of tennis ball and 27 inch long racket. Pickleball is dink game with little effort compared to tennis. Imo the third shot drops only good it you get it to drop. Bounce it to high and it gets put away.
