I used to have sling TV. Then I moved on to RU-vid TV. I am using Philo TV now, and I am getting ready to cancel service because I'm always watching something on RU-vid, so there isn't any need to continue service with Philo. The only thing I will be paying for is my home internet. Once you get accustomed to the cord cutting, you will be just fine. Thank you for sharing.
@matt5539How do you still have a vcr? I had one that lasted for many years. Three times, I have tried to buy a used one on eBay or similar sites. One didn’t play. One played for fifteen minutes. One played for 2.5 weeks. I got my money back, but I gave up trying.
Hey Michael it's gotten to the point that streaming applications have become as expensive as having a cable package. It's a shame how they played of the fact of so many people cut off their cable service. Some of the applications have raised prices more than $5.00 from the previous price. Even though I like streaming better than cable I didn't think it was going to as expensive or more expensive than a cable subscription. I have a Roku Ultra and 2 4K streaming sticks for my TVS. 😊
I don't see how this works. I still end up paying 130 A month. 50 for the internet. 80 for RU-vid tv(79.99) so I can have local channels. Where is the Free stuff?
Antenna probably works great in their location for local. Antenna works ok in my area. Plus Freevee Tubi Plex are great free services, only real cost is internet
Ahhhh, I remember that $35 when i cut the cord , started with RU-vid Tv in 2017 &, I am still on RU-vid Tv having it for almost a decade now, never quit, cancel or paused it since then & LOOOOVIN IT👍 Best of the BEST and worked GREAT with the Chromecast TV on all my TVS in the house in quality and features ,beside that I have all the streaming services ad free for the yearsss and some of them from their get-go they started🤙
It seems that if you 'cut the cord' and get a live TV service that you have just switched which cord your cable comes out of. Didn't cord cutting used to be about killing the cable package model?? Why pay for dozens of channels when you only want 4 or 5? It only took one baseball season for me to learn to live without those 4 or 5.
The carriage charges for local TV is a bunch of crap. Broadcast local TV should be FREE. If the FCC actually did their job and made the local channels broadcast a signal that was receivable in the DMA that they serve we would be able to receive it with a antenna. If they wanted to offer it over the internet in the DMA that they serv that could replace the need for proper broadcast transmitters. Broadcast tv is made to be profitable by selling commercial time.
If you're about to purchase a smart TV & want to use its internal streaming app, make sure the app carries all the channels you watch regularly. For instance in our case LG does not carry (or plan to carry) PBS, ESPN, Criterion, Arrow, Kino etc.
Hi Patrick. I have T-Mobile Home Internet and like it. Step 1 is to see if you're eligible. Here is my link: michaelsaves.com/recommends/t-mobile-home-internet/ Right now they have a free upgrade to the more expensive plan. Most people are fine with the base plan. I explain a lot more in my review article/video: michaelsaves.com/reviews/t-mobile-home-internet-review/
📺If I Cut the Cable TV Cord in 2024, I'd Do This! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D_gtDWx4MRQ.html Start your regular Amazon shopping with my link to support the channel: www.amazon.com/shop/michaelsaves NOTE: This description box includes an affiliate link. If you use my link, I may receive a small commission. It helps offset the 80% decline in RU-vid revenue my channel has experienced since November 2022.
The only thing I miss from cable tv are the cable news networks (and the dvr) but I'm not going to pay $40 a month on sling just to watch them. I set up an outdoor ota antenna and get many more local channels for free than I used to get with a cable (satellite) subscription. Since the big conglomerates own most of the content they've raised streaming costs to such an extent that the days of saving money by cutting the cord are mostly over. The big plus to streaming however, is that you can subscribe/unsubscribe at will.
Not a TV news watcher myself, but in my area there's an OTA feed of Scripps News as a digital subchannel for one of the local stations. You might check and see if it's available where you live.
I finally dropped dish for OTA and free (mostly) steaming services. I’m 89 so I find a great many free older movies and old TV shows. Being old I just don’t care much for present live TV shows or most new movies. I’m fairly satisfied so far BUT, and it’s a big BUT for potential cord cutters, I sure miss the ease of using 1 provider (Dish). I especially miss the guide and simplicity of their DVR.
Thank you, I'm using YT TV and I like it a lot, but if the price goes up again then no. I had Sling which worked fine though at times it had a few glitches. But it didn't have local channels like YT TV does. I'm a soccer fan and YT has the USA, NBC, CBS and FS1 to watch and record games. I also have Peacock TV to watch Premier League matches, once the season is over I cancel it. Continue the great work on keeping us informed. Btw I just wish YT would let us delete recordings like Sling did.
In a few respects, "cable programming" ended up moving online. Prices went up all around, and the deals dried up. Even a lot of broadcast programming moved to peacock etc. I unplugged my DVR, as there's been nothing worth watching in many months.
I now just subscribe to a couple of on demand streaming services. I might subscribe to a live TV streaming service during certain parts of the year. Since I am on the Max Black Friday promotion I can watch NCAA March Madness on Max & CBS with an antenna. I will have MLB At Bat radio broadcasts & Marquee Sports Network during the Baseball season. The Live TV Streaming Services such as Sling TV or RU-vid TV will probably come just during the Baseball Playoffs.
Cut the cord had dtv they connected me to a sperate negotiator but we stood firm even with a nice 40 dollar discount it would have restarted our contract and much preferred to pay 20 dollars less with yourube and some add ons then stay strapped with dtv even after that discount offered
Great channel thank you for sharing your wisdom. I’m a country bumpkin with internet speeds of 5 mbps down 2 up and it works for most streaming services. Someday they will get fiber to where I live. Until then I will enjoy not having people close to me. I could get the Elon musk thing but I’m a On a tight budget.
I use 1Password to manage my passwords across all my devices. I’m on the Apple ecosystem so it works well. When I’m entering on the TV it allows the iPhone keyboard to enter it.
You should pay Tyler the antenna man for recommendations. He's now more knowledgeable than me and I have no ambition to compete against him as I make buckets more money than the average household as an engineer.
95% of all antennas sold are either trash or fake. All antennas are digital. All antennas are analog. All antennas are 4k, 8k , 99k, 10000k including the antenna manufacturered in the 1900s that was on the titanic. No antenna can have a range over 80 miles. There exists no electronic device or booster that can increase the range of an antenna.
I have completely dropped RU-vid tv I bought antenna which is really great. That operate all 5 of my televisions. And I use fire cubes on my television so i'm good tide of the $ 74.00 Every month👍
I use OTA TV and streaming services. I get the local stations OTA. I don't watch sports and cable news is drecht, so live TV services are way over-priced.
I fear I’m subscribing to channels I can get free on another program. I have Roku, tv. I subscribe to Hulu, prime, Netflix, family, Paramount, Peacock, Newsmax. Locals live UTube. All for about $65 a month. No cable. I’m 81 … female and on a tight budget. Is there a better option for me?
I am in the process of cord cutting now. I’ve had Dish for seven years. I had bill credits that they gave me making it not too bad, but those credits expired making my bill $152. Dish will not budge other than lowering my package. They did offer me a whole $10/month off, but only if I re-up for two years. That is not worth $10/month! Anyone else finding that Dish would rather people leave now than work with them on price? I am in the three week trial of YTTV now and will then cancel Dish.
Hi Michael, great channel. Some comments about RU-vid: 1. All YT transmissions are 720p max. I believe they are working on 1080p or 2160p but hav'nt seen any announcements yet. 2. YT has recently upped its ad duration & frequency. Luckily they still provide the ability to quit an ad after the introduction. 3. YT free movies used to ad free. I suspect they arn't any longer. Google is obviously trying to reduce it's deficits! P.S. any chance of a low cost phone (flip & simple smartphone) plan update? I need extremely long standby duration (car glovebox storage). Thanks!
Thanks for watching. I don't have much experience with flip phones, but Motorola has some smartphones with great battery life. I've tested a few over the years. Are you looking for a light data plan? Red Pocket has some cheap annual plans that it sells on eBay. They use AT&T's network. Tello may also be worth considering for T-Mobile's network and they bill monthly. I like Visible and US Mobile for unlimited on Verizon's network.
Yes, a light plan, phone will be used once/twice a month & kept in glovebox for emergencies. Previous ATT flips have lasted many months before needing recharge. Previous ATT flip plans cost $25-30/month, too expensive considering usage.
In regards to your new rule about subscriptions, I get it. And it no doubt would apply to me as well. However, a streaming user(e.g. newbie or less involved with content) who does not have as much exposure or as many encounters with streaming services as ourselves, it may be just too severe, as they may not have as much data to compare with. On the other hand, those individuals might be able to achieve their 80/20 usage from just free content today... and need a similar "free" rule. Keep up the good work!
The problem is if you only have Internet for streaming you are probably paying more than just having dedicated cable. $50 Internet and $70 streaming $120 which isn't any different than old fashioned cable.
Thanks for the new information. I cut the cord some years ago. The only thing i really miss is CNN because i can watch most of my TV shows on Hulu. I dont need to see them live. I had signed for the CNN Now but then they cancelled that. This forces me to subscribe to live TV. I really only want to watch some of the CNN special reports. I can see snipets of daily news but not the specials. If anyone knows of a way to watch CNN special reports please tell us. Thanks.
Suggesting Utube tv is bad advise. It is pricey and worse yet trying to cancel them is next to impossible. There is no canceling option, no phone numbers, and their corporate office (Google) has no live phone number. You are losing your credibility with this suggestion!😊
Thanks for your this info👍. I never hear any reviews on these streaming services customer service. That is a deal breaker for me. I am Dumping comcast Xfinity not only because they are now charging me $200.00 dollars a month ...but their customer service is nonexistent. Horrible. I don't want to subscribe to a streaming service that has shotty customer service.
Just read something here that interest me. We are retired and I would like YTTV. One of our kids lives in another state. Could I share his membership and split the cost?
Michael, I just found your channel = sub'd because I'm finally cutting cable because they will no longer negotiate. Your info has been extremely helpful. A quick recap please; You mentioned getting Roku 4k over express for "powering up tv?" Meaning? You mentioned voice control, any other reason?
I believe that RU-vid TV provides the best live TV experience. I have an eero Mesh WiFi network w/ nVidia Shield streaming boxes, plus a 4th Gen Tablo tuner connected to a $40 attic antenna (in the event of network disputes on RU-vid TV). I had 500mb fiber for $65/mo, but recently upgraded to 1gb fiber for only $50/mo. Yup, they doubled the speed and cut the price. Ironically, most of my current WiFi devices aren't capable of using speeds exceeding 500mb. Fortunately we have Gigabit ethernet in every room. My only gripe is that the excellent Logitech Harmony universal remotes have been discontinued as of a few years ago. :-(
I'll be cancelling YTTV after March Madness. I've found what I want on my antenna, LG Channels, Tubi and Netflix. I'll probably keep Shudder & Midnight Pulp Prime Video Channels and Frndly.
The problem with us getting rid of cable, is that even tho we live in a top 20 city, the part we live in does not get FIOS so the cable company and one other are the only choice…and if you only get wifi, then a streaming service, we’re paying just as much as we would be for cable+wifi on the same bill (and likely more because we’d have to go buy our equipment, etc etc.) I almost never watch the actual TV, usually just RU-vid or similar, but my husband likes it, and we won’t really save any money by getting rid of the cable. One of these days the world will be good and we can just buy individual channels that we want to watch that aren’t priced outrageously.
Thx helpful and I sure as hell need to keep notes on what to do..can be complicated..but a learning experience might as well save money now.....thank you..!
I don't get your reasoning. You have to have internet to subscribe to RU-vid TV. The average internet cost is $50 a month. Adding RU-vid TV at the present cost of $73 a month is not cost effective at all. It would be way cheaper to get Spectrum cable/internet or Verizon Fios.
There is no way the subscriptions i would have to have to see what i see now on cable is cheaper and i still can't see all laker games and some other things. Cable is cheaper and i can see more things.
You know how I save I don't do any of this .The crap programming and propaganda on TV is worth 0 of my hard earned money . I have my own server propagated with my own movies and shows that I watch when and how I want. Yes there is a initial set up cost but within a year or less I was in the black but I do me and you do you.
6:45 That’s not how networking infrastructure works. Routers are not specific to ISPs; they’re just network routers that manage networks. If you buy a Netgear router when you have Spectrum, there is zero reason whatsoever why it won’t work when you switch to T-Mobile Home Internet. However, it is good to note that with the rising commonality of free ISP-provided routers (and modems, for those using cable Internet as opposed to fixed wireless), a large percentage of home users really have no need to purchase their own networking equipment, since most people only have Internet service to access the greater Internet and web, and not to do any complex home or business networking, which is really the main reason to be buying your own network equipment anyway.
Maybe I could have been more clear? The point was don't buy a gateway for Xfinity/Spectrum if you plan to switch providers to one that includes equipment. Also, when I switched from Xfinity to AT&T, I was not able to use the gateway that I bought. It was not an option. I have not tried hooking up my own gateway to the T-Mobile and Verizon boxes, but it isn't necessary since they are included in the monthly price.
Michael, three things that are important for me are channel line up , 2-quality of the viewing meaning is it clear or blurry ..and which live streaming service has the best clear viewing. 3- and last question is...How is the customer service for RU-vid TV, HULU, SLING , and PHILO if one has an issue with the service and quality. Are they responsive, available , helpful ? Can I get info on this Michael ...and would love to hear from current customers feedback. Thanks a bunch
The channels are mostly delivered in the same picture quality across all services, 1080p or 720p for some networks. 4K content is limited and some services charge more for 4K. All services offer customer support, but once you’re setup, how often do you plan to contact them? I can’t say any of them have amazing support. My hope is you don’t need to contact them at all. YTTV gets a lot of complaints because it has a callback feature but no number to call. Most of the others have a number. Chat support is another option. This may help you: michaelsaves.com/streaming/best-live-tv-streaming/
Part of the reason I only subscribe to two pay streaming services is I dont have the time to watch all the content. During Black Friday, I passed on a lot of great deals because of this. The free streaming services have improved their content, so Im watching more of what they offer.
8:05 Although it's never a bad idea to sign up through a third party, I have to say signing up directly with the streaming provider itself via its main website is the way to go.
Calling yourself a "cord cutter" by paying way too much for RU-vid TV is like bragging to your friends that you got sick of overpriced German cars, so you replaced your Mercedes with a BMW...you must be so proud.
Great advice Michael, I have found a trick. If you unfold a paper clip and stick it in the Antenna in jack on tv or use old coax cable, then channel search, you should be able to get a few locals clear. Hope that helps someone. 🙏
