I hope you realise. People have been murdered for making more economic fuel!! The American man who drove from Florida to California at not even half the cost of petroleum pump fuel. Didn't live for long after!!!! Also the man who made a computer storage device that at the time everyone else was moving megabytes. The man was moving gigabytes!!!! Also died within days!!! Mysteriously 'cough' 'cough'!!!!

Fuel pumps were notorious for failing on the 5.0's. That said, I bought my '89 5.0 new (LX Sport, not the wiz-bang GT) in December of '88 and proceeded to own it for 250,000 miles - on the original clutch, I might add. I'm a lifelong Mopar guy, but that Mustang was the toughest car I've ever owned. One head gasket failed about 150k; that's about it - and that car never had an easy day. As spiritedly as my wife drove it, I beat on it pretty mercilessly. I was told the T-5 would fail; it didn't. I was told the 8.8 was junk; it wasn't. Everyone on the forums warned me about the clutch; they needn't have bothered. We sold it finally, after 18 years, to some young fellas who owned a resto shop for 5.0's. They couldn't believe the mechanical condition of car.... Yep, fellas, she was a ringer for sure. I'd own another one in a heartbeat, with decent miles and the stick. -Ed on the Ridge

You know, a lot of people like the classic, early generation quarter horses (as do I), but I think that the Fox platform was one of the best all-around platforms back then; not just because it begat so many great cars [Fairmont/Zephyr (1978-1983) Granada/Cougar (1981-1982), Thunderbird/Cougar XR7 (1980-1982 & 1983-1988), Lincoln Continental (1982-1987), Lincoln Mark VII (1984-1992) & LTD/Marquis (1983-1986)] but because it gave us such a great Mustang (1979-1993, then again as the "Fox4" or "SN95", 1994-2004) and a really nice Mercury Capri (1979-1986) too! RWD, manual trans, V8 power, heal-and-toe shifting; what more could a performance connoisseur ask for? And that blue/silver combo is beautiful, too! If you've set the Wayback machine for 1990, please wait for me; I'm ready to go back when you and Mrs. Wizard are! ⏰! 🐰

This makes me miss my 1990 GT big time. Nothing like a properly sorted Fox Body with the 5 speed and HO 5.0. The 8.8 in mine was new when I purchased my 1990 as well as having had the trans gone through and being given a little warm over on the engine which included a mild cam swap and long tube headers as well as an extrusion honed intake and port matching. And it still got 25mpg when you kept your foot out of it. Thanks for sharing this David! Cheers! Zip~

Top mods to not do for a new driver: plasti dip/spraypaint wheels-kind of ruins the rims to be different exhaust- modern cars sometimes run worse with an aftermarket exhaust and no tune, Mercedes especially radio-stock systems are pretty good now, maby new speakers but dont put a double din in cold air intake-looks cool but the performance gain is not really there, just keep the stock air filter cleaned, stock air intake systems are pretty efficient I did some of these when I was younger and regretted it, i know you want to make the car your own but save your $$ and time

@houseofno

The first gen 1964 to 1973 cars are attractive, but safety wise are essentially rolling deathtraps. The 1974 to 1978 Mustang II cars were ugly, had tiny engine bays and anemic motors. With the third gen Fox Body cars (1979 to 1993) you could pretty much build anything you want. Later models had better build quality and safer cars. These are probably the most affordable and versatile bodystyles out there. I liked the 1994 to 1998 Fox4 cars as well. Not into the 1999 to 2004 cars, sorry New Edge fans. I started liking the 2005 to 2009 cars, liking the 2010 to 2014 cars a little less. Again no offense but I don't like the 2015 to current cars. The styling and performance of the 2020 GT500KR intrigues me, but not the $70k+ price tag.

I would love to own an unmodified survivor fox body like this one. What a beautiful car. The 87-93s are my favorites of the bunch. Back in 1993, I purchased a decommissioned X-Florida Highway Patrol 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 SSP notchback. I bought it at auction fresh from the FHP with 60k miles on it for $3200, pained it back black (FHP cars are black with a tan roof) and left the spotlight on it. It was an incredibly fun car. I really miss it. By the way, in case you need to do anything with the fuel pump relay while working on the fuel system, it is under the driver's seat.

One thing to consider regarding the steering issues is the actual steering column shaft. Right by the left headers there’s this rubberized U-Joint which absorbs impacts and vibration. These over time gets rotten, and will make the car over and under steer. Their rack n pinion are known to leak a lot too but considering the mileage it shouldn’t be a problem. My 92 has over 250k miles and the entre suspension needs work. Beautiful car!

When you talked about crank sensors... the bosch 2 pin found on most German cars, can act up intermittently. Usually the car doesn't want to start when its hot. While you wait for the tow truck, it cools down and then cranks up. Maybe the American style crank sensors don't act up intermittently, but a bosch on a German car can.

The tilt wheel on them isn't worth having as it's just a tilt "wheel" and not a tilt "column". I offer my opinion after I went through the trouble of tilt swapping my '91 just to discover its fairly useless. That said, I'm more comfortable knowing there isn't a 30 year old pipe bomb in my steering wheel anymore.

@@TheBrokenLife It's hit or miss, the biggest problem area is the main harness as it passes through the fire wall. Have personally seen those melt down. Insulation will be fine sometimes until you have to disconnect and move wires to do repairs and it splits off in shards. @@kennethclifford1863 Well, I guess I'll pay more attention to it just as a matter of good practice, but after owning 4 Fords of the same era into modern times, I haven't seen any harness degradation at all. I actually feel kind of ashamed for how bad I thrashed the first three of these I owned in high school. But the three I have now, I have taken care of. Try finding a 87-88 T-Top GT or a factory 5L 5 speed coupe for a reasonable price now. The days of them being everywhere for $500-$1000 are long gone and the ones you do find are either rusted or beat to death. The younger crowd that have never driven one tend to shit on them but they were the cheapest way to go fast back in their day and still damn fun today.

What a gem that 1990 is! I got my license in 1984 and my first experience with decent horsepower was going to Long Lewis Ford in Bessemer and seeing if they'd actually let me drive a new for 1987 fuel injected Mustang. To my surprise they let me! A blue over silver GT 5 speed with T tops. Man, that was fun. Yes, kids, in 1987 225 was an impressive amount of horsepower. But my favorite Mustangs remain the ones I've actually owned. Late SN95s (1999-2004). I had a 2001 GT and later a 2001 Cobra. Still miss the latter and have a twinge of regret I didn't hunt it down and attempt to buy it back rather than get a 7k mile 2009 RX-8. But the rotary is a lot of fun.

Your very misinformed, the Ford Escort was closely based on the front wheel drive Mazda 323, and 220 hp and 300 torque in a car that weighs only 3,000 lbs is not exactly ashmatic. The styling is not everyone's idea of what a Mustang should be, but I think they have a bit of a sleeper aspect to them.
