Yesterday, I watched the live-streaming of Queen’s 2008 concert (with Paul Rodgers) in Kiev. It was to raise funds to aid Ukraine. It was very emotional for me. The huge square in Kiev was filled with tens of thousands of joyous people, celebrating the music. And I looked at that and all their happy faces and thought about what that square looks like now, and what has become of all those people. So horrific.

Wow Goanna. Their anthem was Solid Rock and Shane Howard performed it live on 26th January with many Aboriginal people this year. His work with Aboriginal people is inspiring and I saw they have announced a national tour. What a gem of a song. I recommend people check out the band “Playing For Change” who raise funds worldwide. Great to hear Aussie music. Enjoy your day Lee.

Another fantastic Australian band that deserve far more recognition than just being seen as one hit wonders after release of 'Solid Rock'. Songwriting, musicians thru to final production, is all superb. Recently purchased all their albums to replace missing copies and enjoying them all over again. Thanks Leland 👍👍🇭🇲

That was a nice song Leland and I found myself here in the middle of the night picking up my bass and playing along with your groove. You know what? It's the music that keeps us all sane from the craziness out there. You are not much older than me I'm 67. And I've never seen the world in such a mess where Americans are actually praising a dictatorship more than their own President. Anyway man, keep doing exactly what you are doing. You are a true bass hero!

Am an Australian. Goanna were a big act in this country in the 80's. Were big when you toured with J.T, I saw you, J.T. in concert, great shows, I travelled from State to State to catch as much J.T as I could . Gonna have had many line up changes

The bass intro to Solid Rock is perhaps the best known bass riff in Australian rock music.

Love the way you say Goanna. Try Go Anna and you'll be closer. Goannas are Lace Monitor lizards, usually about 3 feet long. They love to sneak through your campground when you're out, looking for any tasty morsels, like eggs. As for the Goanna band, Solid Rock is an Aussie anthem. It's great you've played with them.

So much good music slips through the cracks due to national distance - lack of label promotion...it's so easy to slip... But it's a deep ocean out there in music...and you never know what the tide will bring in. The packages that will arrive on your shore.

Goanna are a fantastic Australian band Oceania was the follow up album to there debut album Spirit Of Place which has the classic song Solid Rock this year they have reformed to celebrate 40 years since the release of Spirit of Place with a tour of Australia I'm looking forward to seeing them in October here in my home state of Tasmania.

Hi Lee, In the 80’s when I ran a record store, WEA brought in a Goanna promo called Spirit Of Place. It was the band’s first LP. I was blown away. I wrote to the band and got back a huge pkg of letters, posters, etc. All these years, I’d never seen them live. I finally got up the nerve to find a certain member on FB. I wrote a message. And lo and behold, after writing back and forth for a while, we finally chatted on the phone. Can you imagine? I went to Australia in 2016, then back again in 2017, and met up for a get together with this OG band nember. Sister of Shane Howard, Marcia. Again, I lived out a dream. I’ve now become friends with the other female member of the group, Rose. This year is the 40th anniversary of the first LP, and the band is on tour all summer in Oz. Our summer not theirs. My real dream has come true! I’ve begged Marce for years to get back together and play live. I’ve gotten tickets for a couple of shows. And I’m planning my fifth trip down under. If I go. And I pray I can. Then I truly won’t have any regrets in this life. Because seeing them play live would’ve been my only one. It’ll be Utopian if it happens. Spirit of Place is as relevant in today’s world as it ever was. I only wish Goanna had become more known globally. Music this good should be heard by more people. ❤️☮️🙏🏼

Thanks for the backstory Leland ... glad I didn't imagine all of that ... and good to have more info on the huge, and still-growing, family tree of musicians across the globe. It's comforting to know that, in these fractured times, at least we still have our music ... the best and most effective international language ever.

It’s hard to keep coming up with new words for heartbreaking and horrific, and all the other words being used to describe what is happening in Ukraine 🇺🇦 Yes, absolutely, war crimes. Just saw Goanna play last week Goanna is a snapshot of what Australia could have been .. Shane is a very gifted songwriter. An huge influence on his generation, Very humble man Australia is a Nazi wet dream still does not Have a Treaty still under a Constitutional monarchy 252 years of lies, genocide, race hatred secret, undeclared war which hasn't been acknowledged or even ended yet. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

Hi Leland. Had no idea you were on this. Lovely playing. Such a great Australian band with a important songwriter in Shane Howard. Had the good fortune to play drums on a music school performance of Solid Rock two years ago. Hardly matched the Robbie Ross original performance but it was so inspirational to play such an important song documenting a part of Australian history (if only to a friendly group of parents and friends!).

I go back and forth on the positive and negatives on the studio musician. But when I hear that strong proud thick bass on this track I am very pro! But being a middling musician I have been the studio guy but also the touring guy that didn't record in the studio. Anyway I have been with you since about video 12 so onward to 1000!

This was nice. I had to have heard them before, but I don't remember the name. The tune has a strong Craig Fuller-era Little Feat vibe. Hit me instantly. Very cool. Love the bass line and tone - both quite Jaco-esque to my ear. Was this a Yamaha? The Simmons drums sound great here, as well. Masks off everywhere around these parts. People relaxing as though we're done. Very worried about that. However, I digress. Have a wonderful rest of the day!

Hey Leland, greetings from Melbourne, Australia. Hideaway has always been one of my very favourite Goanna songs, and for me has the most interesting bass line of all their recordings. Out of curiosity, do you remember what you played? Was it the Steinberger?
