When I was a kid (in the 60s), I remember a story in a Batman comic in which Alfred was not a childhood fixture but came to Batman later, as a tubby British man who, through his own detective work, deduces Batman's true identity and then becomes his "butler", as a silent partner, and later loses the excess weight to become the familiar Alfred we are all most familiar with (Alan Napier towering over Adam West notwithstanding). Also, the Gender flip on the Penguin, first in mostly silhouette and then the big reveal of it later was delightful and effective.

Finished the show last night and it is now one of my favorites! Bruce Timm hasn't lost his touch and the animation and stories are phenomenal. Though nobody can replace the late, great Kevin Conroy, Hamish Linklater does an amazing job of voicing Bruce/Batman. I cannot wait for season 2.

3:09 In this universe, It’s 1939, right when Batman is starting to take on his vigilante career in this show. It’s supposed to be inspired by not just BTAS but also the original 1940s-70s Detective Comic(DC) stories that Batman originated from.

Yeah so clayface is usually portrayed as a gigantic mud monster but when he was first created in the 1940s he started life in a very similar way to this episode of Batman Caped Crusader. In that first issue featuring Clayface Batman is investigating a series of murders where all the victims were people involved in a horror movie franchise. It was a series where the monster of the film was a serial killer called Clayface because he was a master of disguise that could become anyone. Basil Karlo had played this villain in multiple films and had learned that the upcoming installment was preparing to recast the role with a younger actor and he lost his shit at the prospect of aging out of a role. He dressed up as the character he played in film and used his acting skills to recreate the character's mastery of disguise and started killing everyone involved with the new project in revenge for firing him.

Absolutely love this style of animation, it's relaxing on the eyes even during action and has a cool tone to the aesthetics (if that makes any sense). In short, I could watch this type of animation all day but there are others that just overtax my eyes and mood.

Cody you should watch the original Batman the Animated Series. That cartoon is a classic and the best Batman show. Batman is set in the 30's to 40's era.

So, what's Batman's policy on killing in self-defense? Then again, he probably doesn't usually have to make that kind of choice, being a genius detective/martial/artist.
@justarandomveryintelligent8934
@justarandomveryintelligent8934 29 дней назад
I think that he tries never to put himself in a situation where thats the only way out. I can't think of any situation where Batman had to do that. However, most versions of Batman don't have a lot of reaction if a thug gets themselves killed trying to attack him. Like a thug trying to shoot him and accidentally shooting another thug. Or a thug running themselves off the road trying to ram the batmobile. that kind of thing.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgive me for the long message lol, just a lot to unpack here, and also noted that another person in this thread wanted actual points, so I gave a few. Because they made Penguin female, or race swapped a few characters? Hardly a reason to call it "woke" imo. They're not actively pushing messages about it in your face in a way that's poorly handled like most shows that legitimately make a problem of it. They keep things lowkey, sure Harley and Renee are gay, and there's not a reason to be bothered by it. Sure a few characters are a different race, oh well, it doesn't bother me an ounce because it doesn't change who they actually are as characters(and even then there are other more interesting and fresh air changes such as Barbara being a lawyer, same with Lucius, Harley being an independent sort of therapist rather than working at Arkham, amongst other things). As for changes like Penguin being female, doesn't bother me at all. It feels like a fresh take that makes this world more distinct from the others than it already was, especially for the personality changes to Penguin adding to that freshness(the fact that not only is the characters gender inversed, but also social status and sociability, personality traits revolving around love, wanting to be loved, how attention on the character works, etc. They inversed many aspects of the character which is an extremely interesting choice imo). My only real gripe with this show at this point is that I'm a little mixed on Clayface and Harley Quinn's costume designs, I feel they could have done better with those, otherwise I don't mind the other designs or characterizations in the show. Another good example is how they made Catwoman into sort of a light heartedly dark mirror for Batman, raised rich, an "orphan"(by circumstance of her father being in prison for tax fraud), has a maid who rather than sticking around and caring about her, how Alfred does for Bruce, would rather ditch Selina in favour of money and being mistreated, then how they actively show in the episode that she takes inspiration from Batman for her suit design, getting fun toys, and probably the catmobile from his batmobile. Bruce is fairly well characterized as well, delving a little into his trauma, showing that this version of the caped crusader is much more brutal and willing to duke it out with such individuals as the police(as iirc he similarly was depicted in the '40s era, by which this takes some inspiration), but also showing how tender he can be such as with the Nocturne episode ending where he understands that Natalia was just a child who didn't understand the full scope of her actions. This show in that semblance should not be entirely compared to the '90s Batman show, as it isn't intended to be that series, it knows it is it's own show and works with it. It in my opinion isn't woke at all as it's not actively trying to push those messages with poor execution, infact, I saw very little in the way of the usual messages and themes that dictate something as "woke"(themes of racism, girl power, diversity, which in it of themselves aren't bad messages or themes, but often get mishandled or written poorly in "woke" pieces of media), which it doesn't mishandle these themes as if it has them much at all. Just because it has a more diverse cast of characters does not make it woke, it to me makes it more distinct from other Batman projects, and heck, I'd honestly enjoy it less and be more disappointed if it kept everything the exact same as before. The changes it has are a breath of fresh air to me, and I'd say they've done genuinely well with it seeing as I found myself enjoying it from start to finish.
