Mate, someday maybe the OG satire movie the Wayans started? And by OG I of course mean "Over-Gold"... 😂 "How he go to tha bathroom wit all that shit on??"
"I've been like a father to you! I raised you, just like your father did! I believed in you, just like your father did! I slept with your mother, just like your father did!" always kills me
Then ironically, 4 years later, Drake Bell would later voice Peter Parker/Spider-Man in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man.
Man, I remember my mom winning a contest where us and the other winners got to eat breakfast with Drake at a hotel while this movie was being shot, 5th grade me was so freaking happy because I loved Drake & Josh and got to brag to all my friends & classmates, they thought I was so cool for meeting him, sadly that only lasted a week before I was back to being the "weird" (ADHD.ect) kid that got picked on all the time 😓
I think my favorite non-Zucker film Nielsen line is from Scary Movie 3, after a group of urban gangsters who are supposed to be backing up the protagonists end up shooting each other down: "These men died for their country. Send flowers to all their bitches and hoes."
Fun fact: Here in Brazil, Superhero Movie was kinda of a hit. So, when Disaster Movie came out, the marketing team for the movie changed the the title to Superhero Movie 2: The Injustice League. A lot of people (me and my older sister included) went to movies thinking that we're going to see the sequel to that funny movie with the actor from Drake and Josh. Instead, we got...Disaster Movie...
"Superhero Movie 2: The Injustice League" ....Yeah, I'd watch that. I'm honestly surprised there wasn't a Superhero Movie 2, especially considering the cinema climate nowadays, or at the time, will become.
They should actually make a framing device like Princess Bride, and sell 4 of these as a single movie. Re-edited for the best parts, and some additional ones, for a couple of hours. The whole thing would be like Robotech and self-aware of its own insolence, but make something like Monty Python Meaning of Life out of it. Or Super Sentai/Power Rangers if that's more familiar.
After watching the movie when it came out, I agreed with what you said. He was actually a decent villain concept. I generally agreed with the review. This was constantly ALMOST a good movie.
Knowing Leslie Nielsen's love of bodily functions...the fart jokes aren't too surprising, there is a story that he would often bring a fart machine to interviews to lighten the mood.
A story? There is a video compilation of his interviews. I think he loved fart jokes too much and, judging by people's reactions, they were good because of his timing.
Fun Fact: Drake Bell's character is mostly based on Spider-Man. A few years after this movie he voiced Spider-Man in the TV series Ultimate Spider-Man and shares the same birthday as Tobey Maguire, the original Spider-Man.
@@AutoArtemAuto just wish i could here the original actor they wanted for that cameo, Josh Keaton, he did record the dialog but they ended up redubing it
I grew up with both Scary Movie and this one. Those were the " My Mom didnt know what they were when she bought them and later we were forbidden to watch, but me and my siblings watched it on my sisters laptop with a DVD tray built in after she (Mom) went to sleep(yes it was THAT old)"
My dad took me to see this movie when I was like 5. I’m not really sure why, but I’m guessing he thought it was an actual superhero movie and didn’t want to leave after spending money on tickets when he realized it wasn’t for kids. I don’t think I got any of the jokes but I still instinctively knew to lie to my mom about what movie we saw lmao
I'd also rate Scary Movie 3 pretty high on the Movie Movie totem pole. "You know your teacher, Brenda?" "Yes?" "SHE'S DEAD!" *screams* "Gone forever! Died in a horrible, painful death! Gone! Gone! Gone! Just like your dog!" "My dog's dead!?" "I just ran him over with the car when I drove in! Everyone you love around you is dying!"
To quote the Late great Norm MacDonald and Something i'm sure Tracy Morgan might be thinking about right now is “Stand-up has the best writers because it’s the hardest writing by a million miles.”
Craig Mazin also worked on the script for the BORDERLANDS movie But because of AVI ARAD, the production became so problematic that Mazin asked for his name to be removed from the credits
i blame more eli roth for that because of how an insanely conservative director he is. he cut all the political aspect of script, that was an already important aspect in the games and since mazin already did a good job in that in chernobyl without feeliing like pandering he could have pull it off, but insted he just went with another guardians of the galaxy knock off even mazin demanded to cut his name out of the credits
@@himayamataAnd for the production of “Across the Spider-Verse” being a problematic mess, alongside Phil Lord. Phil Lord and Chris Miller always treated animators like shit (especially for “The LEGO Movie”), but this time, it made people loose hope & faith on Avi Arad. Avi Arad doesn’t deserve a job. He deserves to be fired, blacklisted, and executed immediately (the last bit is a joke, but everything else isn’t).
There are a few things I will give credit to this movie for: 1:It actually had a story and wasn’t just references 2:There were actually a few laughs in this one 3:It felt like it was at least TRYING!
Doug: *reads up on Drake Bell* ok that's a lot to unpack I'm just going to make poop jokes. Wise decision Doug. Wise decision. Some things just... can't be joked about.
@@jeuryrabassa4724 Got to voice him at the cost of cutting Josh Keaton who had booked the role and recorded all the lines. And the implication was that Spectacular Spiderman, Wolverine and the xmen, and EMH were all in the same continuity
9:46. Trivia note, the Tom Cruise actor in this movie is Miles Fischer, whom was in Final Destination 5 & has done multiple song parodies of movies & shows.
Among all the parodies in this particular series of movies this one definitely falls into my “guilty pleasure” category, it’s got its flaws, particularly with a bit of the structural pacing like Doug brought up but the high points still hit hard when they do
Out of every modern "Movie" parody that isn't "Scary Movie," I think this is the one where if someone tells me they genuinely like it, I can mostly go "Yeah, I can see that." It's not GREAT. Arguably not even very good. But it has its moments. And you get the sense that they actually ARE trying, which is more than you can say about any Friedberg and Seltzer joint.
It does still suffer some of the same problems as Friedberg & Seltzer movies with the dated pop culture references that have nothing to do with the genre (although not quite as many times as those movies) but there are still a handful of funny moments. When it comes to grading movies of the spoof genre, I’d say if Mel Brooks and Zucker, Abrahams, & Zucker movies are like an A, and the Friedberg & Seltzer movies are like an F, then this one is like a C.
It’s funny that Doug makes a Nickelodeon reference with Double Dare considering Drake Bell was a Nickelodeon veteran with The Amanda Show and Drake & Josh.
Surprisingly Improved Sequel (according to TV Tropes): *On Rotten Tomatoes, this film currently has the highest rating of the Scary Movie spin-offs.* It has often attracted praise from even the series' most strict detractors for its surprisingly well-written story, *effective deconstruction of the superhero genre and for having many funny moments.*
A Kind of Gross Fact: The film was, confusingly, advertised with Behind the Scenes Commercials on Nickelodeon, for a much younger-than-expected audience for a film with such crude language and sexual material. This was most likely done to cash-in on star Drake Bell, who at the time stared in the popular Nickelodeon sitcom, Drake & Josh.
Yeah, I remember that. I wanted to watch Superhero Movie specifically because Drake Bell was in it. It didn't take long for my Grandma to realize the movie wasn't for kids and got me the Hell out of there.
Oh please, I watched as a kid and LOVED the crude jokes In Croatia we teach kids not to say rude things but we also let them know what those things are, we don't hide it, so you get a mix between polite and funny rude. The problem is not crude things, it's parents not being good enough to teach how to use those things in life
And Matt Lanter would go on to voice Anakin Skywalker, and Danny Jacobs, who played Borat in Epic Movie, would go on to voice King Julien, taking over the role from Sacha Baron Cohen.
I unironically loved this movie as a kid. It had just enough laughs without being completely filled with cringey/bad jokes. I forgot how much I loved that "This just in, Tom Cruise is dead." (Couldn't fly)
Another Fun Fact: It's the second film with Leslie Nielsen and Robert Hays (who plays Blaine Riker, Rick's father). Previously, they co-starred in Airplane!.
@@jadenmartinez323 agreed. This is the only movie that actually made me legitimately laugh hard the first time I saw it. It’s stupid, but damn is it funny as fuck
I think one of my favorite jokes is when they start noticing each other's injuries "How'd you get that cut?" "Met a girl on Craigslist. How'd you get THAT cut??" "Met a GUY on Craigslist"
Jokes you didn't mention: "Titanium Blade's, capable of cutting diamonds!" "Good thing I am not wearing diamonds" "I bet you $100 you can't land a single punch " *punches Kevin Hart* *Drake gives him the money*
6:21 Damn Critic, you got nothing out of that nail gun scene? Even if the shot didn’t make you laugh Kevin Harts reaction was hilarious. I think it at least deserves a passing glance.
My Dad took me to this movie by accident because he wanted to see Hancock that came out at the same time. He asked for 2 tickets for "superhero comedy" and this is what we got😂
I think a reason why this movie works more than the last one reviewed is because there's an overall narrative being parodied instead of random events happening to the characters. Also Leslie Nielson somehow mostly makes it better as well. By the way, during the credits there's a message that states "We are just about halfway through this thing".
This movie is golden compared to 99% of the other movie movies. Scary movie 1-3 being the gold standard. my biggest cons are: - Weinstein involvment - corpse sex - fart jokes
Part of the reason this movie is considered one of the better parody films is it does have a legit if goofy story behind it as opposed to the others which are just Family Guy style cutaways stitched together.
Leslie Nielsen’s ability to say and do the world’s most outlandish things imaginable with a perfectly straight face had to be the greatest gift ever given to a man.
"Please no flash photography." Okay, credit where it's due, I saw this with my dad as a kid and have very few memories of it, but *that* made me burst out laughing.
Another Interesting Fact: Craig Bierko was cast as Wolverine, he appears in the poster and in the cast credits, but his scenes were cut. In the final cut, only Richard Tillman appears as Wolverine.
Another Curious Anecdote: In the scene where Aunt Lucille says, "Rick walked off a class trip," Uncle Albert is reading a newspaper. The back page of the newspaper is an advertisement for a book called "Forgiving the Franklins" which is actually a movie (Forgiving the Franklins) written by Jay Floyd, who is a clearance administrator on this film.
People take for granted that this movie deliberately also was shot like an early 2000s movie with the type of lens they use...in 2008, meaning you better dang know it is definitely parodying only early 2000s superhero tropes! That is nice attention to detail!
I'm sad there was never a "Parody Movie" movie. I don't even know what it could have been about and probably would've had a 95% chance of being terrible but that 5% chance it could have been the most amazing of them all is worth it.
This one is still funny to me and I think it’s one of the few that hold up since most of the humor isn’t involving references to stuff at the time, but to super hero tropes we are mostly filled with today.
*UNCLE ALBERT*: _I've been like a father to you! I raised you, just like your father did! I believed in you, just like your father did! I slept with your mother, just like your father did!_ Pure twisted comedy xD
Another Fun Fact: Several of the characters in this movie have alliterative names - Rick Riker, Jill Johnson, Lou Landers to name a few - reflecting Marvel's habit of giving their characters first and last names that begin with the same letter, e.g. Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Jessica Jones, Stephen Strange, Bucky Barnes, Sue Storm, Matt Murdoch among others.
My favorite scene in the entire film is the thanksgiving dinner: "How did you get that cut Sir? Oh, I met a girl on Craigslist" "You have a cut on your lip young man, how did that happen? Oh, I met a guy on Craigslist"
The “healthy cough blood” line and the part where his uncle dies and there’s a crowd of people the lead runs over to, only to find them all watching a little monkey dancing, while the uncle dies a few feet away. Those were the only two funny parts I remembered from this movie
Interestingly enough: Drake Bell would actually go on to voice act as Spider-Man in the cartoon “Ultimate Spider-Man” and actually did a good job with the role of Spidey and Peter
*The following are the musings of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!* [EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] 14:10 - *SEAGULL Laugh* "I'm sorry but the SPRIKLER PISS SCENE got me right in the old FUNNY BONE!" 14:14 - "Oh, come on NC, its okay to laugh! That joke was actually pretty funny, juvenile but still funny!"
Honestly, outside of the first four Scary Movie's, this one is probably my favourite of the bunch. The cast is better, Leslie Nielsen still absolutely killing it, Christopher McDonald practically still playing his usual type-cast role but as a super villain is more hilarious than it really should've been, and to be perfectly honest, those original super hero ideas/suits are pretty damn good. Not all the jokes land, but damn if more got me laughing better than majority of these other ones. But maybe its just cause I enjoy super hero stuff more than... whatever most of the other movies were satirizing.
You neglected to mention my favorite lines. Hourglass: These are strong enough to cut diamonds! Dragonfly: *faux Batman voice* I’m not wearing any diamonds. It’s the little gems of stupid but effective humor that make this movie.
Did you know there was an alternate ending where the final fight begins and ends in the convention and it’s where Dragonfly gets his wings? No crotch explosions, no falling off the roof, it’s great
0:44 I would have to disagree with u on that one this was ahead of its time and that Kevin hart scene with all the Apple products not so far from what we have todayv
Drake Bell's character is mostly based on Spider-Man. A few years after this movie he voiced Spider-Man in the TV series Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) and shares the same birthday as Tobey Maguire, the original Spider-Man.
I loved this movie growing up. Probably because it parodied the original Spider-Man which I still love and a full length parody was just perfect for me. There’s so much stupid in those movies it was just begging to be made fun of.
Could you please do these as part of FanScription • What if Disney’s Cinderella didn’t make it to the ball (Disney’s Cinderella 1950movie) • What if Bambi's Mother survived (Disney’s Bambi) • What if Flik and Atta had children (A Bug's Life 2) • The Incredibles vs The Sinister Six (Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman and Vulture) • What if DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians had a sequel (DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians 2) • What if Disney’s Tarzan and friends found an unground world with dinosaurs and a lost civilization of people who mistake Jane as a Goddess (Disney’s Tarzan 2) • What if Elsa was the main villain of Disney’s Frozen • Batman vs The Green Goblin • Spider-man vs The Joker • What if The Evil Queen (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937movie) had won? • What if we fixed Daredevil (2003movie)
I thought this was one of the better parody movies in the vein of the Scary Movies. It had a plot it had memorable lines. The characters were well cast. It’s actually pretty good to be honest.
