Very nice results. I imagine the suspension seat post helps greatly when bouncing down the steps. "grin" Thanks for a nice video and a wonderfully restored bike.
I was about to buy a new bike until I came across your channel. I now have a SWEET old Schwinn bike that I have fully cleaned and tuned up thanks to your videos! And TBH I think it has made me enjoy this bike WAY more than any bike I have purchased in the past lol. It's crazy how much fun I am having on this cheap old bike! Appreciate it man! Love how you do the videos! 🏆🏆🏆
that sounds great! im glad that i was able to help. i think you like things more when you can work on it yourself. cheers mate i appreciate the support !!
Those late 80s early 90s GTs are the best looking hardtails ever made. Fantastic paint jobs. Especially the 18" frames. Look fast standing still. I had a Daktari White Avalanche. Coolest looking bike I ever owned.
Haha there’s a lot of old ones out there. Some of them actually work pretty well Hopefully the new ones are lighter/ better. Pretty fun though, full circle
@@layspeed there are a lot of similarities for sure, I'm the same I've got 2 atm and had others. Tha main thing I think differentiating them is the fit. I've done a MTB to gravel conversion on a Kona, gone the whole way with new fork, disc tab welded to frame, 650b wheelset etc, and it rides amazingly and is really comfy. To achieve that though, I need a decent stack of spacers on the steerer, riser drops bars and a 55mm stem with a frame that is a size down for me. So I think they are very similar, but with modern bikes being optimized for it, the fit won't take as much messing around with to dial in
@@jrooker1113I have a few vintage Konas and was going to do something similar to what you did to one of them. What model Kona frame did you use? But I got an amazing deal on an older used Kona Jake the Snake instead so now I just have too many old Konas 😂 I agree that newer bikes geometry makes fitment easier. The Snake just fit me so well right out of the gate. But I wish it had disc brakes sometimes.
@@layspeed just wrote a long reply but don't know if RU-vid is posting it, can reddit links be shared on RU-vid?, was gonna link you to my build to see it
- The car is very beautiful and very new. Top notch work. I was planning to buy a new bike when I came across your channel. Now I have repaired the old bike into a new bike. Thank 👍🤏
Cool video, I did a garden for a friend and they gave me a GT Palomar that had been hanging on their garage wall for 25 years, just needed a little bit of tlc and this video helped in giving it.
Did a 96 zasker two years ago with a doner bike with a mix of xtr and xt. With new Chris King head set and bottom bracket. Tough part is waiting for the parts. Other than that had fun for being my 1st time rebuilding a bike. Now giving it a try to rebuild the wheels with 517 Mavic rims with used Chris King hubs. That should be fun too. 😅 enjoyed your rebuild. Awesome job!!!
Hell ya that sounds great ! A lot of nice parts. Def would recommend a wheel stand to build the wheels if you can get access to one. Will make the process a lot easier ! Cheers mate I appreciate it
The hardest part must be selling them on afterwards. I'd never be able to let them go after going into such detail restoring them. Good job great videos
A wonderful Build as usual, thank you very much for your projects, your effort and patience. Encouraged me to do bike builds in my own. It is always a process of learning. Just finished my first build of a green GT Borrego commuter from the frame. Thanks Gary!
Very impressive patience and rebuild. I have the early 90's aluminum frame GT bikes. I have done this many times, but have learned some tricks from you.
@@garysprojects Liked it so much I found the honda bars and orderd them for my GT Tequesta I just scooped. Can't wait even though it's currently 10 degrees F outside lol
Waiting for this one to go up on Marketplace! Have seen a few of your bikes for sale there (I'm in Melbourne as well). Turned out great - I reckon the rigid fork looks even better on it! Great work!
I always find bikes put out on trash night and I've gotten a few that are considered to be desirable. Never have I found a GT...That has to be some sort of testimony to the quality of these bicycles. Great build. Great vid.
That stairset in the end reminded me how I almost died some time ago 😀 I am used to go down stairs on my 29er and it is very easy, just skrrrr. But I rode a 26er the other day and just drove down that same long stairset and these smaller wheels taught me a lesson hahaha. Instead of skrrrr it was more like ka ka ka ka ding! 😀
Enjoyed watching this build, love the old GT's and have owned several GT's between 1992 and 2010 . I recently bought a 1999 GT Tequesta, to be build into a 26" cruiser, I was going to buy a brand new Identiti Rebate fork ( rigid jump forks to replace a basic RS, Judy C's ) but waited for a but and then found a nearly new fork on eBay, paired with a new FSA headset. I borrowed a GT BMX stem and Haro handlebars of a cheap GT BMX I bought for parts, the Haro handlebars were worth the money I paid for the bike, haha. My next job is to get a 1x9 drivetrain working. Currently it has an Alivio chainset with a stripped thread on the drive side, but will be replacing that when I can get it off, somehow. It's a work in progress but I can at least use the bike until I have some more money for other parts. Doing this on a tight budget.
Thank you my dude I appreciate that ! Bike sounds cool ! I actually have the identi rebate forks , good looking forks will chuck em on a build eventually! Ya it’s good to be able to ride the bike while wait in on parts , niceeee
Wild how tight the pedals felt, I guess 20 bucks is 20 bucks - I'm going to have to grab a set for that sweet sweet DMR sticker though. Like you said I guess they assume they'll loosen up as ridden--or the factory just dacks them up with air tools to 10 ugga duggas. Be interesting to see if the pedals 'wear in' and feel a bit too loose eventually?
Yeah I’m sure they would a little ay , but yeah factory settings was so tight, even tighter than bmx pedals !! They must think I am actually good at riding 🤣🤣
Cheers mate ! I usually keep the ones that I spend the most work on or are rare, then I try not to have bikes that overlap in their function e.g 2 singles speeds , but yeah I mostly sell them off ay can’t keep em all haha
Not sure if they sell it in Australia, but for those nasty mud spots I always use a product called simple green. It works great for washing my dirtbike or cleaning up oil on the floor too.
I think the DMR pedals are so firm because they are dirt bike pedals, and spinning is not so desirable here so that you can land cleanly on the pedals. My DMR pedals are also very firm.
Hello from Singapore Gary! Mind sharing what version of t-cut you are using? Might have seen it from your previous vids, but can't recall. Trying to restore the frame of an old GT Outpost, appreciate it :)
Awesome vid, I do a few builds too. Love yours they’re quite unique. Just wondering did you get the Mars Ultradynamico from here in Aus or did you get them from OS like somewhere like Blue Lug? Cheers Gary
Last month I bought the same GT in green for $50 bucks at a local pond shop. It was destroyed! I've slowly brought it back to life. The wheels were totally gone. Rode til the bearings in the hubs scratched inside. Needed a complete overhaul. I'd like to replace the headset to 1 1/8th to threadless and remove those awful forks...
I'm into speed only but love the comfort of an MTB. Want to convert my MTB into a fast hybrid. How did you figure out what size diameter chainring to get so it wouldn't hit the chainstay?
It really depends on your bottom bracket length , if you have a default bottom bracket you should be able to run a big ring on the out side. A bit of trail and error if you don’t know
@@garysprojects Cheers man - thank you for making your videos. I just picked up a cheap kona cinder on ebay. I want to learn some new bike skills and try do all the maintenance myself. Hopefully i can apply some of the stuff i learned here.
Regarding the BB chainring to chainstay clearence, I was instructed to back the drive side cup out and lock it with the non drive side cup. Sealed BBs only! I've not had to do this myself. But the recommendation comes from a highly respected source: Barnetts Mechanics programs.
Bike looks great Gary. I got those pedals last week and they are a bit rough as well! I don't know if they come with grease already or you have to put the grease in? There doesn't seem to be enough grease for both though.
Cheers mate , mine came with two tubes of grease but I didn’t put any in them because when I opened them up and looked inside seemed like they were all greased up. Maybe yours need a little loosening just like how I did in the video ! Good luck ! Cheers
The whitening with hydrogen peroxide within plastic wrap doesn't really work. What does work is fully submerge it in the stuff and let it sit in the sun on your counter. Or use a UV light if it's overcast. If you don't have enough fluid for submersion, you can rotate the sleeve periodically, so different parts are submerged and whitened. More work, but same result.Great job by the way
Tan wheels look LUSH! Temped to get me one of them bikes with a front suspension. Currently "only" got a specialized rockhopper fully rigid restomodded. while cool, you kinda miss the suspension :D
To whiten products the best method is to use cream bleach. (The kind that hair dressers use). Brush it on as a paste and then wrap in glad wrap. Leave in the sun for 24 hours and then rinse. :)
Have used it with much success to whiten vintage computer parts etc. Works on basically any plastic/rubber component that has been sun damaged/faded/darkened. @@garysprojects
I hope you'll be home those Wheels to somebody that will actually save them. I'm trying to replace the wheels on my recent and first build and they want a pretty penny for them they're proud of those rooms for a 26-inch moutain bike and I'm not paying 200 bucks just because they anodized The hub red. We all know where the bearings come from and it's the same place
How do y'all source your preused parts? I went to a local community community workshop and they basically just hoarded junk. Not sure if buying online is worth it in Australia... Plz help
Cheers Steven ! Yes it was pretty fun ! I think the frame is pretty solid but still feeling out the forks and seat post atm. Need more riding to find out ! Probably hang on to it for a little bit until I iron out all the wrinkles
@@garysprojects i just recently picked up an 2007 L Zaskar GT expert & have throughs of mounting two 20ah batteries along with the reliable BBSHD for longer rides up to a 100klm with an average speed of 25kph....🚴♂️☄
i have a 2000 klein attitude comp frame and i want to swap parts onto it from a donor bike. how do i know if the parts will fit? are the parts all interchangeable from a 90s/2000s era specialized hardtail?
I just recently had the same issue with the front derailleur not getting low enough due to the water bottle mount. Try seeing if the derailleur clamp can go over the mount, mine was able to because the way the clamp metal was concave due to how it was manufactured. Actually here is what I mea: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wl76ouPk_ng.htmlsi=SwbuvJLdAQzL4F0B&t=211
