This was my FAVORITE school lunch back in the 90s when I was a high school student. This cheesy, pizza-flavored sloppy-Joe-like mixture baked on top of a crispy hamburger bun. Which makes for an amazing Pizza Burger, recreating this simple and fun recipe from my past!
This authentic recipe is literally taken straight from the lunch ladies that cooked at my high school back in the early 90s - it is legit! It was the coolest thing making these in my own test kitchen and to taste these delicious pizza burgers again after so many years. This recipe is a guaranteed hit!

my highschool pizza burgers put all mozzarella cheese and shredded spam in it. it's really good too.

Omg! I think you found the recipe I've been looking for for the last 40 some odd yrs. Not even kidding! I graduated in 1972. Everybody loved those yucky boloney laden half sandwiches! I can't thank you enough for sharing your recipe!! Am going to try these again to see if I still like ithem. God bless!

The things they did back in the day to cut cost by using chopped bologna and our pizza burgers I would have never have known, but they are so delicious

Right?! I remember when I first found out that baloney was in Pizza burgers and I was surprised too… You would never know by eating them. But if you think about it, baloney has a very spiced flavor and it actually adds a lot of flavor to the ground beef and cheese mixture. It seems weird, but, it works.

@@deanvoss7098 awesome! I was told that my lunch ladies at my school also used SPAM in their official recipe, but when I got the recipe card it said bologna. Urban legend? Maybe. But I’m sure that turned out just as good.

Our pizza burgers were burgers with marinara/spaghetti sauce and cheese. N they were greasy n amazing. I been wanting a pizza burger since!! Theres a few other food items from the school cafeteria that i have been wanting to eat again as well.

Every school made pizza burgers different from the next. The school I went to used about 75% ground beef and 25% ground pork and then Hunts tomato sauce with added spices and herbs. I use a mixture of beef, pork and chicken and homemade tomato sauce. I will need to try your recipe soon.

It’s cool to see that there are so many other schools that also served this for lunch. It was all the rage at our school but I’ve known so many people that didn’t know what these were.

@@ttocselbag5054 haha ahhh dang… yes we were spoiled for sure! Originally I had heard that there was SPAM in our recipe in place of the bologna but the official recipe says bologna so I went with it!

@@TaratheFoodie - SPAM! That wouldn’t be bad IMHO. I loved that stuff as a kid, and I’ve read that it’s actually made with decent cuts of pork meat (not spleens and snouts). Yes, it brings out the wide-eyed, adventurous young boy that still lurks inside this 61 y.o. man body!! Keep doin’ what ya do girl, I’m lovin’ this channel. 😁😁

How about adding some shredded Mozzarella cheese on top of each one? That wouldn't be the authentic school pizza burger but I think it would taste good with Mozzarella.

I’ve seen some recipes that use spam in place of the bologna if you would prefer that. Do you want to put something in there in place of the baloney to make the mixture creamier in a sense and spiced and bologna has a spice to it that’s why it is used.
